Equipment - Protective metal dust mask associated with Dr Lorna Lloyd-Green
This style of mask was developed in Britain and began to appear from the 1930s, though original models may have been produced in the 1920s. Various patents for this style of mask were still being filed in the 1960s, so they were used for a considerable period of time. It is possible that the original filter pads for these masks contained asbestos, as they supposedly utilised 'fire proof' materials. Asbestos was already in use in other British respirator masks at this time. Original cataloguing information believed this item to be an eye shield, but further research has indicated that this is not the case.Mask consists of a metal plate designed to cover the lower half of the face. There is a recess along the top edge of the plate designed for the nose to sit in. There is a large oblong opening with rounded corners at the centre of the mask, which is a mouth opening to assist speech and is the main air intake. There are five round holes on either side of the mask, likely included to decrease the mask's breathing resistance for the wearer. Rounded slots at each edge of the mask are threaded through with an elastic strap, used for attaching the mask to the face. This mask would have been used with a filtering pad attached, but the pad is missing. -

Five audio cassette tapes of approximately three hours of interviews with Israel Kipen, a founder of Bialik and its longest serving Council President. One audio tape of a one hour interview with Sara Segal, an early teacher at Bialik in Carlton. Both interviewed by librarian Jan Marshall in April 1987. Woolen putees worn as lower leg protection. These were wrapped around the lower leg from the top of the ankle boot upwards and tucked into the top to offer some sort of protection from the elements, wire entanglements and to prevent loose clothing from becoming a hazard. Officers had high topped bootd and Mounted personal had leather leggings. These were for the rankl and file infantry and other members of the forces. -

The Kew railway was opened in 1887, and diverged from the main (Box Hill–Lilydale) line about half-way between Hawthorn and Glenferrie. From the point of divergence the line was slightly less than one mile long, and it had only one intermediate station — Barker. There were four road over-bridges and two level crossings, including one over the busy Barkers Road. The line supported a passenger and goods service, and was electrified in December 1922, at the same time as the main line to Box Hill. There were a number of peak hour services which ran from Flinders Street station (Melbourne) to Kew, but in 1938 all but one of these were diverted to the Ashburton line, where traffic was growing. This had an adverse effect on Kew traffic, as passengers from Kew needed to cross over a footbridge at Hawthorn to change trains, and the main line trains were usually already crowded by the time they reached Hawthorn. At about the same time the off-peak trains were replaced by road buses. In 1952 all passenger trains were withdrawn, but the road bus service continued for many years. Goods trains were finally withdrawn in 1957, and the railway was dismantled in 1958-59. Functional Object - Tramcar - materials
1330.1 - Approx 110m long section of a compressor armature end binding from the compressor of tram No. 40. The binding section consists of string which has been impregnated with insulating varnish. Located between the end of the armature and the commutator and retains the mica core. Small pieces of mica on the inside. Has a circular shape inherent from its use. - Not numbered. 1330.2 - approx. 25mm long section strip of red silicone tape with glass fibre reinforcement - 25mm wide with a plastic separation strip. Supplied by XLNT Enterprises - see fax on W.A.Doubleday files dated 5/1/2000. 1330.3 - as above, but two sections of this tape joined together as a sample. 1330.2 used to wrap the armature - two layers applied cut to be about 22mm wide instead of 25mm - repair done on 3/3/2000. Yields information about the style and printing of tickets used in Ballarat and Bendigo tramways and how they were presented.1721 - Block of 200 tickets - black ink on off white paper, denomination 13c, lettered B278000 to B 278199, headed State Electricity Commission of Victoria, Provincial Tramways. On rear in black ink is a SEC advertisement "ELECTRICITY makes life easier" with the SEC's little boy wrapped in a towel logo. The 200 tickets have been stapled onto a heavy cardboard back with a heavy metal staple and a small cardboard retaining strip at the top of the ticket. The 13c ticket was green from 1/9/1966 until the fare change in Jan. 1969. These notes are based on a report prepared for the Board re the donation of materials collected by Wal Jack and donated to the BTM in 2011. The following notes are general across the collection unless written for a specific Ballarat item. Has proven association with Wal Jack and tramway developments within Australasia until 1964 and given their extent particular significance. Features West Australian trams.Grey covered photograph album with word "Snapshots" on front cover, tied together with a grey cord, light brown paper inside covers holding some 19 sheets of card on which photos have been mounted using photo corners of various types, captions in blue or black ink. Has some 126 black and white photographs including some postcards. Has photos of various locations and lines within Perth, includes works trams, trolley buses, arranged by tramcar class in some places. Also has some Kalgoorlie and Leonora electric trams and Derby horse tram. Includes some tickets and one newspaper clipping re the closure of the Perth system.
