The State Electricity Commission of Victoria 1921 to 1993 was responsible for electricity generation in Victoria and the operation of three Provincial Tramways. It had a strong safety focus for the time. This first-aid box would have been provided to work places containing first aid equipment and materials. It has been made with interior slots or dividers to hold items. A four motor bogie drop centre combination tram of the Melbourne W7 class No. 1029, built at Preston Workshops during 1956, entered service on 1/2/1956. Fitted with sliding doors, Remote Control equipment. See webpage btm.org.au/trams/504.html Spent it appears all its life at Preston or North Fitzroy Depot. Transported to Newport Workshops during 1995. More to come here. Eight page printed document or report titled "A Further Lease of Life " written for BTM magazine Fares Please!, in September 2003. The document is a transcript of a memo prepared by the Ballarat Tramways Branch Superintendent dated 7 May 1948. Written by A. V. Mawby. The document examines the running condition of the Ballarat Tramway system, including the rolling stock, buildings, permanent way, overhead equipment, passenger numbers. The photo shows St Kilda Junction, shortly after the introduction of electric trams on temporary track replacing cable trams in St Kilda Road. Cable trams ceased on 26-12-1925 with electric services commencing on Sunday 27-12-1925. There are passengers on the tram. The conductor of W class tram 274 with the destination of Melbourne is holding the pole while it rounds the curve, and in the background is W class tram 386 (St Kilda Beach). A cable tram replacement bus, Reg No. 86053, with the destination of Brighton Rd is passing a policeman on point duty. Various construction equipment and materials can be seen as well as a work gang in St Kilda road, dismantling the cable tram track or constructing new permanent track. Single or front sheet of a set of notes titled "Instructions to Recruit Motormen", with a note that it was copied 10/2/1936 - has the heading of Electric Supply Co. of Vic. The document gives a description of the equipment fitted to a tram and its purpose. Most likely prepared for early ESCo tramcars, prior to the arrival of trams ex Melbourne. Handmade book with light green covers made from a cut file holder with brown paper glued on the inside, containing 39 typed (original) sheets of paper giving Instructions or Rules to Motormen. Has five page index, then 34 pages, with 104 rules or instructions, covering Tramcar Equipment (electrical), location of faults, tramcar braking, failure of the mechanical brakes, tramcar emergency braking, automatic braking, automatic electric signals and general instructions for Ballarat. The brown paper appears to have been placed on the outside, as it is cut and glued on the inside of the book. Individual sheets held into the book with a metal clip. On the rear of the book, a small piece of cardboard has been glued over the back of the metal strip. Notes mentions bogie trams, so therefore post 1945. Gives details of route electric signals, use of doors on the trams relevant to the central median strip. On page 4, has hand drawn diagram showing the motors in series and parallel. On page 8 has a hand drawn diagram showing the car lighting circuit arrangements. Has been folded in the middle so as to store in pockets of a coat. The photograph shows Z-class trams 3 and 5 being fitted out or constructed at Preston Workshops, 1975. Z3 has been fitted with a trolley pole and other equipment, while Z5 is on stands. There are a number of people looking at Z5, which indicates a possible workshop tour. The tours database does not give a formal enthusiast tour of Preston in 1975.
