Charles Grant opened a boot makers business on the northern corner of Grant Street and Waddell Street in 1907. The business was advertised as being in Maddingley Road. By early 1910 the business had moved to 'Ryan's Corner' on the corner of Main Street and Gell Street, Bacchus Marsh. The brick house behind the boot maker's shop was built for Alexander Murdoch in 1869. It was used as a residence, a boarding house and as part of a business by a number of different owners over many years. It was known as the Murdoch house and also as 'Links Cottage' when it was used as a boarding house. For most of the twentieth century it was used as a residence. James Dearing was the head gardener for Benjamin Nathan, who owned Rippon Lea between 1909-1935. Dearing is believed to have worked for the Nathan Family at their previous home in High St., Armadale. He is understood to have left the employment of the Nathan's in about 1914-1915.Decorative prize certificate awarded to Mr James Dearing, head gardener to Benjamin Nathan, by the Royal Horticultural Society of Victoria on the 11th February 1909, for "1 new or rare Plant". Certificate is made of white paper mounted on to cardboard. Decoration and text are very similar to RL 0448- the certificate is a cream coloured cardboard with printed text and decoration in green ink. The decorations consist of: a shield with a lion and a horse on either side, at the top of the certificate; a sheild with a kangaroo and an emu on either side, with advance Australia below, on the bottom of the certificate. On either side of this are two circles, the right circle consists of flowers, the left circle consists of fruit. Coloured postcard of an ESCo tram westbound at the intersection of Sturt and Lydiard St. Ballarat, c1906 - 7 - has a destination box. There are several pedestrians in the picture. Taken from the east side of the intersection, looking towards the Town Hall, with the National Mutual Insurance building and Snows in the photo. Also shows the overhead arrangements - two wire for Sturt St, single for Lydiard St, coming into the intersection. On the rear of the postcard are the initials "JE" in the top centre, a 1d Victorian stamp, cancelled 5/4/1909, addressed to a Mrs Sproston of Skeleton Cottage Avoca with a message from her granddaughters - Fervie and Edith. In early 1900, three Emmett brothers, with support from George Mason, set about following up a report of gold in the area. Confirmation of gold led to a gold rush in June 1900. This jug was presented as a trophy to the Newmerella football team in 1909. The jug was donated by Carl Dreverman & Co. Carl Dreverman & Co. was an Ironmongers in Nicholson Street, Orbost. Established in 1900 at first as Dreverman and Reynolds, Carl Dreverman took over the store which still exists today in Orbost as Orbost Hardware. The official Newmerella Football Club was probably started in 1913. Simon Gargan was the founder of the Newmerella Football Club.Prior to that teams played socially. This cup was presented to the Newmerella team which defeated an Orbost team.Football clubs in Orbost and district, through their many changes, have always been an important social fabric of the community.
