Melrose died in July 1936, at the age of 22, when his new high-wing monoplane "Billing", a Heston Phoenix registration VH-AJM, broke up in turbulence over South Melton, Victoria on a charter flight from Melbourne to Darwin. Two days later, over one hundred thousand people lined the streets of Melbourne to pay their last respects. Black and white photographic image of Charles James Melrose, the only Australian contestant and the only solo flier in the England-Ausralia air race, 1934. He is being chaired by R.A.A.F. men. Built at DHA Mascot and taken on RAAF charge as A17-80 in September 1940. It was allotted to 4 EFTS at Mascot. After a short spell at 11 EFTS at Benalla and an overhaul by Ansett in mid-1942, it was allocated to 7 EFTS at Western Junction. During World War One Tim Tovell of the No. 4 Squadron RAAF befriended a French orphan known as Henri or Digger. The child became an unofficial mascot, was given a custom made AIF uniform, and at the end of the war was smuggled back to Australia. As an adult Henri was killed in a car accident and is buried at Fawkner Cemetery, Victoria. Members of the No 4 Squadron subscribed for a memorial stone.Five black and white image.
