Ruyton Girls' School
Magazine, Ruyton Girls' School, The Ruytonian, 2004
In July 1909, a modest 12-page booklet was put together by members of the fledgling Old Ruytonians Association (ORA) and distributed to the Ruyton Girls' School community. It was one of their first projects, and their aim was to nurture continuing interest in the School among former and current students. They named it "The Ruytonian." At first, The Ruytonian was produced twice yearly, and always bore a plain cover with a simple name banner. Initially, it was the work of volunteer editors from the ORA, but in 1913 they handed the publication over to the first student editors, Esther Gibson and Lucy Tickell. Since that time, the style and content of The Ruytonian has continuously evolved. The biggest shifts occurred in 1942 when it transitioned to a yearly publication, and in 1969 when it moved to a larger A4 format with a cover image specifically selected for that year. The record has strong historic significance as it pertains to the fourth oldest girls' school in Victoria, Australia. Ruyton was founded in 1878 in the Bulleen Road, Kew, home of newly widowed Mrs Charlotte Anderson (now High Street South). Thus, the record can be used as a reference example for research into Victorian school history. The record's significance is further enhanced by its exceptionally well-documented provenance, having remained the property of Ruyton Girls' School since its production.Colour publication printed on white paper. 104 pages.Front Cover: establishing / g / n / i / p / o / l / e / v / e / d / building / extending / RUYT / GIRLS' SC / Est. 1878 / elbourne Roa / enlarging / producing / elevating / g / n / i / s / i / m / i / x / a / m / Ruytonian 2004. /ruyton girls' school, the ruytonian, kew, old ruytonians association, yearbook, school, publication, girls school, junior school, senior school, journal, students, teacher -

Photograph, Rev. Peter Blackwood blocks off the TAB, 28/09/1986
The Rev. Peter D. Blackwood was ordained in 1977 and his first placement was at Burwood Heights. He has had several placements, including as Presbytery Minister and Associate General Secretary of the Synod. He is now retired. This picture was taken after a church protest in Warrnambool. "Members of the Warrnabool UC walked home from church on Sunday 28 September, in a protest against Sunday racing. The 150-strong congregation left cars parked outside the church, which coincidentally blocked all car spots outside the local TAB. The vehicles were left parked throughout the afternoon, creating an inconvenience for punters wanting to place a quick bet. UC minister, the Rev. Peter Blackwood said the congregation decided on this form of protest after the TAB had ignored objections from the UC that the TAB be open on Sundays…"B & W photograph of Peter Blackwood standing with arms folded, by the door to a TAB at Warrnambool.C&N identificationblackwood, peter d., warrnambool protest, tab on sundays -

B. 1835 England, D. 1919 Christchurch NZ. Methodist minister. Chronicle 17 May 1919, p.43: Deep regret will be felt in South Aus-tralia at the passing away of the Rev. Samuel Knight, one of the best-known and most loved of the earlier ministers of the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Australia. The announcement of the death of Mr. Knight, who was in his 85th year, was received by cable on May 11 from Christ-church, New Zealand, where he had re-sided during the last few years with his only son, the Rev. Percy N. Knight, B.A. The veteran preacher spent over twenty years of his busy and useful life in this State. His last visit to Adelaide was in July, 1915, and it was through his agency and influence that £1,150 was raised for the reduction of the debt on the Archer-street Methodist Church. At that time, except for his head being crowned with snow-white hair, there was little in Mr. Knight's appearance to indicate his great age. He was obviously perfectly happy, and was still the tender shepherd who was so well beloved by his flock when he labored in South Australia. The older members of the Methodist Church remember well the splendid work he did more than half a century ago. He won similarly widespread respect in Vic-toria when he was transferred to the Con-ference there. He had charge of the prin-cipal circuits in both States, and he was equally successful as an eloquent preacher, a sympathetic and an assiduous pastor, and a wise and prudent administrator. His presence in the pulpit was always greeted by a large congregation, and the earnest-ness and spiritually of his discourses never failed to impress them. He was imbued with the true spirit of Methodism, and he had a firm and confident belief in the doctrines which he inculcated with such emotional fervor. Mr. Knight was a broad-minded, genial man with a keen sense of humor, and he shone on the platform. A true Christian, he was also a man of the world, and he could, when appealed to, give valuable counsel. He was a friend to be trusted, and he was ever ready to help those in need of his practical sympathy or his well-considered advice. He lived in an era of great Australian Methodists, and he was one of the greatest among them. Mr. Knight was an indefatigable worker, and under his control all the institutions of the circuits in which he worked nourished abundantly. He was a guide, philosopher, and friend to the younger ministers and exercised a great influence for good in Conference. Mr. Knight was born in Liverpool in 1834 and came to Australia in 1854. After spending several years in Victoria he arrived in Adelaide in 1867 to take charge of the Pirie-street Church. He received three ap-pointments as pastor at Pirie-street, two at Kent Town, and two at North Ade-laide (Archer-street), and he was also at Burra, Gawler, and Moonta. He was president of the Wesleyan Methodist Con-ference in 1877. In 1889 he returned to Victoria, and among the circuits of which he had charge at different times were Brunswick-st (Melbourne), St. Kilda, Ballarat, and Geelong. His activities by no means ceased after he went on the supernumerary list. For some years he was connected with Queen's College (Uni-versity of Melbourne), for which he col-lected a large sum for the liquidation of certain liabilities. The Samuel Knight scholarship was founded last year at Queen's College in his honor. Mr. Knight had taken up in recent years the work of establishing ministers in new circuits and of helping struggling churches. He undertook an energetic campaign of attack upon the debts on various churches that, recognising what his personality could do for them, had appealed to him for assistance, and achieved remarkable success in placing the finances on a sounder footing. A considerable portion of his own income in recent years was devoted to the assistance of young ministers, and to aug-menting the stipends that could be offered by newly established circuits in various parts of Victoria. Mr. Knight had been a widower for many years. His only daughter, Dr. Adela Knight, who appeared to have a brilliant career before her in medicine, died in Vienna about 25 years ago. The Rev. Samuel Knight was for many years a close personal friend of the late Sir Samuel Way, with whom he always stayed when visiting Adelaide. His death was a subject of reference at a number of Methodist churches in and around Ade-laide.B & W head & shoulders studio portrait of Rev. Samuel Knight, mounted on buff card.Rev. S. Souvenir Programme (1944), DIAMOND JUBILEE celebration of the SUNSHINE HARVESTER, 1944
As a youth while working on his father's farm, Hugh Victor McKay became tired of the labour involved in winnowing wheat by hand. In 1884 he built the first machine in the world which did the winnowing in conjunction with the reaping. On Monday 21st August 1944, which coincided with the birthday of the late H. V. McKay, more than 2000 employees and friends of H. V. McKay Massey Harris Pty Ltd were entertained at the Melbourne Town Hall, in celebration of the Diamond Jubilee of the Sunshine Harvester Works. The event was planned to "turn it on for the boys' in a manner befitting the occasion." The compere was Eric Pearce (of later TV newsreader fame) and the entertainment was provided by leading performers of song (W.M.Laird and Mary Miller), of music (John Robertson, W.M.King, and the Sunshine Brass Band), and of humour (Charles Sherman). The accompanists for some of the performances were Betty Miller and Eric Fox. Two films depicting the activities of the Sunshine Works were shown, and the managing director Mr C. N. McKay, was presented with a book by Mr Fred Bult who had 50 years service with the company. The book contained more than 1000 signatures from invited employees who had completed more than 10 years of service, Supper was provided in the Lower Hall, and the MC for dancing to the Synco-Harvesters Dance Band in the Main Hall was James Patrick. The committee which organised the function were Messrs. L.W. King (Chairman), G. Baker, J. Downing, R. Stewart, F. J. Lee, V. Armstrong, F. Fields, J. Aird, G. Wilson, J. G. McKay, T. N. McArthur, and R. Webb, with secretaries Messrs. G. Shaw and D. J. McKay. The above information was compiled from the Souvenir Programme, and from The Argus of Tuesday 22 August 1944 which can be viewed at http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article11357700, and from the Sunshine Advocate of Friday 30 June 1944.The Souvenir Programme provides a historical record of how the Diamond Jubilee was celebrated, as well as the type of entertainment and the names of the entertainers and other people involved. It also lists the types of dances such as the 'Fox Trot' and the 'Pride of Erin' that were normal entertainment in 1944. The Souvenir Programme is also significant in what it does not tell us. There is absolutely no indication of what would be considered to be a supper for an event like this in 1944, especially in the Melbourne Town Hall. From a historical point of view it would be interesting to know.Beige coloured cardboard document which is folded in two, and has brown coloured printing on three of the four sides. The document provides a detailed list of the entertainment and the presentations held in the Melbourne Town Hall, to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of the Sunshine Harvester Works.1884 1944 / SOUVENIR PROGRAMME / DIAMOND JUBILEE of the SUNSHINE HARVESTER / MELBOURNE TOWN HALL / Monday 21st Aug.sunshine harvester, diamond jubilee, h. v. mckay, massey harris pty ltd, 21 august 1944, 1884, 1944, melbourne town hall, sunshine harvester works, sunshine harvester, diamond jubilee, h. v. mckay, massey harris pty ltd, 21 august 1944, 1884, 1944, melbourne town hall, sunshine harvester works -
