Alexina Weller was the first wife of Reverend Weller. They arrived in Melbourne in January 1925. They lived in the Mission's Manse for 4 years. Alexina was part of the Ladies Harbour Lights Guild. They left in January 1929 for South America. She died in January 1934.The organ was donated in memory of Mrs Weller as a member of the Ladies Harbour Lights Guild. Photograph was taken at the Mission to Seafarers Melbourne. It is historically significant as it marks a royal visit made by the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester during the Duke of Gloucester's term as 11th Governor General of Australia (1945 - 1947). Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester, GCB, CI, GCVO, GCStJ, GBE (born Lady Alice Christabel Montagu Douglas Scott; 25 December 1901 – 29 October 2004) was the wife of Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester, the third son of King George V and Queen Mary. Frank Oliver was MTS chaplain during this period. The Gloucesters did not return to Australia on any official visit until 1965. (see ADB entry for Duke of Gloucester) According to the list of engagements from the Argus, on Saturday the Duke and Duchess left Governor House to visit the Central Institute at 11am where they were received by the Governor and Lady Dugan, the chaplain (Padre Oliver) and members of the committee. They left at 11.15am : the legend of the picture "AS THE DUCHESS LEFT THE MISSION TO SEAMEN Central Institute on Saturday morning, Padre Frank Oliver, chaplain, called for three cheers, which were given heartily."This photograph reveals the contemporaneous relationship between Australians and the British Royal family and connection through the International organisation that is the Mission to Seafarers. Several seafarers gathered in preparation to run a foot race, 'Melby' Balaclava, Christmas day, 1907. Melby was the house of Mr William Peter Peterson, a station owner and merchant. The house was named after his birthplace, a small town in the Shetlands, Scotland. William Peterson had married Louisa Eliza, the sister of Frederick Sargood,who he was in business with. She died in 1867 and he remarried to Emma Paulin Hutchinson, she is the Mrs Peterson who welcomed the seamen during picnics on the ground of Melby on several occasions in 1914, 1916, 1917 and 1919 (or 1918) generally for Boxing Day. Clippings regarding fundraising for the MTS during the 1930sAS an entirely donation dependent organisation the Mission services have constantly needed publicity and promotional support to continue to offer services to seafarers. This collection of pre-WW2 clippings reflects the emergence from a period of great Depression economically.The collection is a useful research source.A group of 8 thin damaged pages with clippings adhered either singly or in groups of 2 or 3 clippings some images - primarily from the "Argus" circa late 1930s. "Charles E. Turner was an artist who exhibited at the Royal Academy in London, and specialised in landscape and marine views. Having served in the Royal Air Force in the First World War, reaching the rank of Captain, Turner worked as a war artist during 1939-45. Turner painted pictures of the Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth for Cunard, which were made into a series of popular postcards. He also designed for Churchill Cigar Boxes, and, alongside paintings demonstrating his first-hand experience of combat, produced illustrations for Illustrated London News and Sphere magazines. Many of his oil and watercolour paintings of the two World Wars are preserved in the collection of the National Maritime Museum, London, and at the Imperial War Museum, London." The life buoy from the Largs Bay located above the bar helps dating the photograph to post 1957: Largs Bay was launched in 1921, as a mixed passenger/cargo ship. During WW2 she took part in a large number of convoys.nIt was scrapped in 1957 so had a service life of 36 years. Her sister ships were Jervis Bay, Moreton Bay, Esperance Bay and Hobsons Bay. She carried many passengers to Australia to start new lives after WW2. The Reverend Frank Leslie Oliver, Senior Chaplain at the Mission to seamen from 1930-1960, was awarded an OBE in 1956.Indicative of the recognition of long service at the Mission and reflects early vice regal support for the Mission and services, ongoing Royal patronage by the Princess Royal, and previous interest with visits by HRH Prince of Wales in 1920 and the Governor of Australia Duke and Duchess of Gloucester circa 1945.
