Churchill Island has a significant photograph collection dating from the nineteenth century. Moonah trees can be seen growing in various spots around Churchill Island. They are a type of Melaleuca and can live for up to 300 to 400 years. Moonah trees were of special significance to the Bunurong people, the local aboriginal tribe, who called Churchill Island Moonar'mia. The Bunurong people also have a special legend which relates to the Moonah Tree. The legend is that there was a boy and girl who had fallen in love and wished to spend each moment in each other’s embrace, this resulted in them neglecting their family duties. The lovers still continued to disappear to be alone, so the tribal elders banished them from their village. The moonah tree trunks are the reminder of the lovers in their tightly entwined embrace twisting around each other. A planting of a pine tree at Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital on 17 April 1991. Legacy had a programme of donating trees grown from seeds from Lone Pine in Gallipoli. One photo shows 4 Gallipoli veterans standing by the newly planted pine tree. One shows President John Sullivan with the shovel. Also with representatives of John Allison / Monkhouse who provided the plaques for the tree. A different photo was used in the July 1991 issue of the Widows' Newsletter (later called The Answer) and explained two small Lone Pine trees were donated in appreciation of the care extended by the hospital to widows and dependents of veterans. Special guests included WW1 Gallipoli veterans who had revisited Gallipoli for its 75th Anniversary. White paper labels say: "Gallipoli 'Lone Pine' Lives on. Two lone pine trees, propagated from Gallipoli Lone Pines, were presented on behalf of Melbourne Legacy to the Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital by the President, Legatee John Sullivan. The trees were presented in appreciation of the care extended by the Hospital to widows and dependants of veterans." "Commemorative plaques. Managing Director of John Allison / Monkhouse, Mr Clive Allison and Legatee Rob Allison presented bronze commemorative plaques which will be installed by the trees." Livistona australis - the Cabbage Tree Palm, is a fan palm that grows naturally in the lowland forest and swamps of southern Queensland and along the east coast of Australia and it occurs further south than any other Australian palm species. It is the only palm that is found naturally in Victoria. The early settlers supplemented their meagre rations with the hearts of the Cabbage Tree Palm.This is the southernmost stand of Cabbage Tree Palms in Australia and the only location in Victoria where these palms grow naturally. This photograph was taken by Nicholas John Caire between 1878 and 1904. Nicholas John Caire was born in 1837 in Guernsey. He arrived in Adelaide about 1860 along with his parents who encouraged his early interest in photography. He opened a studio in Adelaide in 1867 after traveling extensively throughout the Gippsland taking photographs. After marrying in 1870 he moved to Talbot in Victoria until 1876 when he opened a studio in the Royal Arcade in Melbourne. Photos of plaques at the base of trees at the Shrine of Remembrance. One is of the Lone Pine planted from by Legacy from the seeds of a cone from Gallipoli and planted by Legatee Stan Savige in 1933 in remembrance of fallen comrades of the 24th Battalion. The plaque is in the form of the red and white diamond badge of the 24th Battalion. This tree had to be removed in 2012 due to its age had led to safety concerns. Also a plaque from the Olive tree of peace planted by Legatee Frank Doolan in 1973 which was the 50th anniversary of Legacy. Other trees were for Netherlands' Service Personnel, and the 18th squadron NEI-RAAF Forces Association, and the fallen comrades of the RAAF Beaufort squadrons. There is also a tree for the 'Carry On' Club of Victoria. These photos were taken at the same time as views of the Legacy Garden and photos of the man and donkey statue at the Shrine of Remembrance. Believed to be late 1980s when the garden was renamed for Legacy, and before 1998 when the statue of the Widow and Children was installed. Taken in 1908, this photograph, though rather blurry, gives an indication of the location of the early settler properties in the valley in relation to one another. European trees have been planted at 'Kalorama' , the first home of Ellis Jeeves. John Lundy-Clarke grew up in the Kalorama/Mt Dandenong area and later in life (1972-74) began to write a comprehensive history of the area working from an original settlement map in an effort to cover all areas.Black and white photograph looking across hillside with large trees and rooftops visible. The scarred tree is located on a hillside in a local reserve. The bark has been removed in the past to make a boat or other large utensil. Melbourne's skyline can be seen faintly in the distance in the middle of the photograph with local suburban development in the middle distance. The set of 20 photographs were taken of a number of archaeological ands sacred sites in the Bulla district.
