Photograph, Foundation-Members of Intermediate Legacy Club ILC 1930, 1930
A photo of 14 the original team of men that started the I.L.C. (Intermediate Legacy Club). It was probably taken about 1930 just after the ILC was formed. The accompanying letter dated 30/11/1983 and note shows the photo was sent to Legacy by Harold Bokes and given to Legatee Frank Doolan of the archive committee for the archives on 7/12/1983. The note in Frank's handwriting shows he had identified all the members in the photo and that it had been taken by John Barnes. Back row: R. Rimmer, Dan Fitzgerald, Ted Kennedy, J Lawson, R Davidson, Frank Holliday, A Warnecke. Front row: Norman Smith, Roy Gilbert, Frank Corrie, E Kennedy, Jack Kennedy, A Lawson, Len Frazer. Absent: Jimmy MacGregor, Alan Davidson, Fred Hollingsworth, Bert Woods. Background: The ILC was formed in 1929 with a total membership of 18. The idea of the club sprang from those boys who had outgrown the Junior Legacy Club. In the early days it fielded a lacrosse team and it was this that mainly held the members together. Enthusiasm wained after a few years as it lacked a solid objective. The answer came from one of its members and in 1938 they founded the Don Esses Club. This was a club for the children of incapacitated ex-servicemen which met every Thursday night at 7.30 run by the ILC members. The name came from the signallers' code Disabled Servicemen's Sons. During the second world war 80% of the members of the ILC enlisted in the services. Leaving only 8 members that could not join due to ill health or reserved occupations. They continued the Don Esses and whatever aid they could to Legacy. ILC members had always helped Legacy where possible including being camp leaders or camp staff, with the annual demonstrations, and coffee stalls at the ANZAC dawn service. Post second world war some ILC members were nominated into Legacy, others drifted away in civil occupations. It was found difficult to recruit new blood into the ILC and eventually membership waned when the boys from the Don Esses clubs found other youth activities to join. The ILC ceased to meet regularly in the mid fifties. However a strong comradeship still existed between members and they would meet in one anothers homes. Members were always ready to help the senior Legacy Club in any way in their power and still helped at Christmas parties and summer camps. ILC was a service rendering organisation and was self governing. Non-sectarian and non-political, the members were ex-junior legatees over 18 years of age. After serving in World War 2 members were eligible to become members of Legacy. An early photo of junior Legatees who had formed the Intermediate Legacy Club in 1930.Black and white photo of 14 foundation members of the Intermediate Legacy Club and a paper label, plus a letter and a note with the names of the members.Handwritten label says 'Foundation-Members of Intermediate Legacy Club'. Article - Article - Women, Ballarat Girls' Technical School: Women of Note; Joan Kirner (1938 - 2015)
Joan Kirner was born on the 20th June, 1938, the only child of John Keith Hood and Beryl Edith Cole, whose belief that girls could do anything holds importance in explaining Joan's commitment to improving the status of girls and women Joan graduated from Melbourne University in 1958, and was sent to Ballarat where she taught at the Ballarat Girls' Technical College. Like all women at the time, her marriage to her husband, Ron, a teacher at the Ballarat Junior Technical School in 1960, meant that she was precluded from permanency in the service, an injustice which fueled much of her activism as an education lobbyist and later, as Minister for Education. The birth of three children, and the move back to Melbourne, marked the beginning of Joan's career as a community activist. Joan Kirner's career in politics has two distinctive phases: twelve years in the Victorian Parliament (1982-1994), the remaining decades in community politics. In the Victorian parliament, Joan held the positions of Minister for Conservation, 1985, Minister for Education, 1988, Deputy Premier, 1989, and Victoria's first woman Premier, 1990 to 1992. She retired from parliament in May, 1994. She was a Co-founder of Emily's List which supports women wishing to enter Parliament. Joan Kirner introduced the Victorian Certificate of Education. Book - Artwork, Ivy Wilson, Album of original Ballarat Technical Art School folio by Ivy Wilson, c1922
Ivy WILSON (1907-1998) Ballarat | Australia Ivy Wilson was born on 05 July 1907 to Charlotte and Edward Wilson of 167 Mair Street, Ballarat. She attended Humffray Street Primary School and the Ballarat Technical Art School (a division of the Ballarat School of Mines) in 1922. Wilson's student folio contains several stencils hand-cut from paper and card. Among them are stylised graphics of correa, waratah, gum, and kangaroo apple as well as kookaburras, cockatoos and a koala. With diverse applications, stencilling attracted a range of students at the Ballarat Technical Art School. Stencilling was applied to interior surfaces like cushions and curtains. Commercial briefs included wall friezes and murals. One of Wilson's examples, a wreath was subsequently translated into embroidered needlework. Wilson’s folio possibly consists of mostly junior technical work, as she appears to only have sat a single senior Education Department examination, Drawing Plant Forms from Nature. Alternatively, given her focus on textile-based arts, she may have been an evening trade student. Ivy Wilson married Frederick Henry Russell on 23 December 1933 at St Mary's Church of England Caulfield, and had one daughter - Nola, who gifted this folio to the University’s permanent Historical Collection. Ivy died on 17 November 1998 at Caulfield.Silver cloth covered photo album of artworks by Ivy Wilson. David Ward's son Edward joined the company around 1837 and the company name was changed to David Ward & Sons or David Ward & Co. Perhaps both names were used in succession it is unclear. Henry Payne appears as an edge tool maker in 1837 and joins the company before 1845. Perhaps he joined in 1837, as a result, this caused the name change to David Ward & Co. In 1843 Henry Payne registered the trademark name of Ward & Payne consisting of the crossed hammers above an anvil with W to the left and P to the right. Henry Payne became the junior partner in 1845 and died in 1850 and ownership of the company then reverted to the Ward family. After 1845 the firm built a large business in edge tools concentrating on carving tools, chisels, and gouges. Another David Ward (1835 - 1889), possibly the son of Edward Ward, took over the company in 1855 and was an aggressive young executive with the company before that. He grew the company's fortunes in both the sheep shearing scissor and carving tool businesses. The company grew and expanded its factory to a full city block and published a 501-page catalog in 1911. The company was still in business up to around 1970.A tool made by a well-known company and regarded today as a collector's item for those enthusiasts that collect vintage woodworking tools. Melbourne Legacy
Document, Redevelopment of Legacy House 2006, 2006
Three documents relating to the redevelopment of Legacy House that was completed in 2006. In a message from the President published in the Bulletin, Legatee Bill Rogers mentions the official opening of Legacy House by the Governor of Victoria Professor David DeKretser AC on 25th August 2006. Also that two new tenants had been secured, IGA and Starbucks. The refurbishment had been necessary to upgrade the lift, provide better wheelchair access and comply with regulations. The notice also mentions an increased use of Direct Mail and the launch of the Torch Society in April. Second document was a reprint from a Press Release in 1957 when Sir Dallas Brooks officially opened Legacy House after purchase and refurbishment. The refurbishment was the first time Legacy approached the general public for funds as 90,000 pounds had been required. It also tells of the history of how Legacy acquired the David H Dureau Memorial Building through funds donated by a donor in 1944, a different property was purchased then sold and funds used to buy 293 Swanston St in 1956. The third document was the address that Bill Rogers spoke at the official opening on 25th August 2006. It mentions Bert Dennis, a former Junior Legatee, was donating the proceeds from an auction of a Dennis Family Homes project the following day. Document was from a folder of documents donated to the archive by Legatee Bill Rogers that related to his time as President (March 2006 - March 2008).A record of the history of Legacy House and its refurbishment over time.Print out x 4 pages about Legacy House, its redevelopment, reopening and history.dureau house, properties -

John Cleeland JP of Newhaven, 1826-1914, a native of County Down, Ireland, came to Victoria in 1840 with his parents and settled at Darebin Creek. After a few years spent there he went to sea in his schooner yacht of 200 tons, the Harriet, visiting the South Sea Islands and the west coast of South America. In 1859 he took the well known Albion Hotel, Bourke-street east, Melbourne, the starting place for all Cobb and Co's lines of up-country coaches, and kept it for 22 years, marrying whilst there Miss Blake, of Mornington. Shortly before leaving the hotel he purchased 7000 acres of land at Phillip Island for breeding purposes, and there bred Wollomai, who won the Melbourne Cup in 1875. In 1881 he retired to his magnificent estate, besides which he has another 1000 acres at Bass and other properties. He also once owned racing stables at Brighton, where he had Barwon (which won the Champion race) and other valuable horses.
