This ball was possibly made by Corporal C. McMullen during WWI. McMullen made footballs for the Australian Imperial Force, all of which were hand stitched. He made the original ball for the 1916 Australian Rules exhibition match held in London and watched by 3000 spectators. McMullen's balls were called "The AIF Ball", indicating that this might be one of them. The inscription "Match .II." suggests it was used for a later match.The provenance of this object is unknown, but it was potentially made by Corporal C. McMullen for use in an AIF exhibition match. If so, it is a highly significant piece of sporting memorabilia, and holds national significance as an object that tells the early evolution of Australian Rules Football and the importance of sport to the armed forces.Brown leather football, deflated. Edward Cook & Co were soap makers and chemical manufacturers in Bow, London. The company registered its new name in 1898. It was later taken over by Unilever. The document, issued for use during the First World War for its employees is dated 29 December 1915. While days of prayer were traditionally conducted in parish churches, large companies also undertook to hold the services during World War 1. This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers, that was donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son John Rogers in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s. The Kiewa Butter Factory began in 1893, named after the Kiewa River on which it is located. By 1905, butter shipped from Kiewa was receiving a top price of 114 s per cwt at the London market. It continued to prosper until 1959 when it merged with Tallangatta Butter Factory and Creamery Co. Ltd to become the North Eastern Dairy Company. This electroplated silver teaspoon was made by the Sheffield Silver Plate & Cutlery Company Limited from about 1913 to early-1930s. It was recovered from an unknown shipwreck in the coastal waters of Victoria in the late 1960s to early 1970s. The shipwrecks in the area range from around the 1840s to the early-1930s. It is part of the John Chance Collection. Sheffield manufactures produced high quality silverware products. In the mid-1700s a cutler, Thomas Boulsover, invented a process to fuse copper between two sheets of silver, which could still be like solid silver then the edges were bound in silver. Items made this way are now referred to as Old Silver Plate. The modern method of electroplating has a much thinner layer of silver. The firm Sheffield Silver Plate and Cutlery Co. Ltd. was established in 1913 by Mappin & Webb to make spoons and forks using the American Wilzin process, which was a failure. In 1923 the company was incorporated then re-financed and reverted back to the older production method for electroplating. The maker’s stamp usually had the letters “S.S.P. & C. Co Ltd EPNS” and often included an octagon stamp with “SSP”. The firm had the registered trademarks of ‘SILCUTA’ and ‘SILTONA’ and has also used the name ‘Sheffield Nickel & Silver Plating Co. Ltd.’ The firm had manufacturing Works at Priestley Street, Sheffield from 1913 until the 1960s. They also had a London office in 1919 at Atlantic House, 40a Holborn Viaduct, London, E.C.1., then in 1921 at Union Bank Buildings, Charterhouse Street, E.C.1. The company was dissolved in 2000, the last office address being 23 Albemarle Street London, W1S 4AS. Although this spoon is not linked to a particular shipwreck, it is recognised as being historically significant as an example of cutlery, possibly from a passenger’s luggage or imported for use in Colonial Victoria in the 19th to early 20th century. The spoon is the only example in Flagstaff Hill’s collection that is connected to the manufacturer Sheffield Silver Plate and Cutlery Co. Ltd., historically significant also, as in 1939 the same manufacturer was a recognised supplier to the British Government. The spoon is also significant as it was recovered by John Chance, a diver in Victoria’s coastal waters in the late 1960s to early 1970s. Items that come from several wrecks have since been donated to the Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village’s museum collection by his family, illustrating this item’s level of historical value.Spoon; teaspoon, nickel plated silver, discoloured to brown. This piece of music was composed by Joseph Summers (1839-1917). The date of the composition is between 1863 and 1866. The brother of Charles Summers, the sculptor, Joseph Summers was born in England and came to Australia in 1865. He was an organist and composer, an Inspector of Music in schools and in charge of music examinations conducted through Trinity College, London. In 1897 he moved to Perth. The signature of ‘Miss Jessie Webster’ presents a problem as no information has been found on this person. This is a most significant item because of the date, 1866, and the name, ‘Jessie Webster’. But it is not known if the music has any local provenance. The item also has social significance as an example of the type of music played in mid-Victorian drawing rooms. This is a piece of music of four printed pages of musical notation. The cover of this music is missing. The paper is white with black printing and all the pages are much mottled and stained. The edges of the pages are ragged and torn. There is some pencil scribble on the first page. This menu appears to have been produced for the 1947 Maiden Voyage of the S.S. Athenic travelling between London and New Zealand via Curacao and Panama. This was possibly the first voyage on this vessel early in his career for engineer G. W. Duncan and therefore a souvenir. The commander of the vessel was D. Aitchinson. Also of interest given that the UK was still very much governed by post WW2 rationing, is the range of food available for the farewell dinner listed.Mariner Duncan had a particular regard for the Mission to Seafarers. This plate for display on a commissioned new table at the MTSV chapel acknowledges his bequest and the material donated. Collectively the G W Duncan material includes: photographs, professional data memorabilia and written and commercially printed resources. The memorabilia relates to his career at sea and in particular the role of an engineer, including a handwritten manual of notes and references relating to the mechanical and engineering aspects and areas of responsibility for maintenance. Twice rejected in Melbourne for active service, Rudduck booked a passage to London and joined the King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment, gaining his commission shortly thereafter. Lieutenant Rudduck lost his left arm in action in France, but following repeated requests was susequently permitted to return to the trenches, where he later died from further wounds on 5th June 1918. Starting in the 18th century, glassworks in English port towns like Bristol, London, Sunderland, and Newcastle began producing hollow glass rolling pins. They were originally produced for sailors to give to loved ones, particularly young women they were hoping to woo for marriage. It is the earliest known English group to be founded based upon the iconography of the ancient druids. King George VI was the second son of King George V and Queen Mary. He was Duke of York from 1920 to 1936, living in London and also (from 1932) at Royal Lodge, Windsor Great Park. In 1923 he married Lady Elizabeth Bowes Lyon; their elder daughter, later Queen Elizabeth II, was born in 1926. George VI succeeded to the throne on the abdication of his brother, King Edward VIII, in December 1936. Handkerchief produced as a souvenir for the Coronation of King George V1 and Queen Elizabeth on 12 May 1937. A song composition by Helen Ellis, of Kew, first known to have been performed in 1942 at the BBC for the 'Shipmates Ashore Programme it was then published 1943. A copy of this song and one other composition the composer Helen Ellis is held by the National Library of Australia. Promotional text also indicates that the song was performed by the notable Australian singer Peter Dawson. The song "The M.N. ships get through" carries an important acknowledgement of the oft forgotten vital role of the Merchant Navy as carrier of goods and supplies, and especially so in wartime. The publication is of special significance to the MTSV as an example of the many skilled and creative women who have supported the Missions to seafarers.Commercially printed single fold music score for a 2 verse song and chorus. This Item is part of an outfit owned, worn and donated by Annie McIntyre. Worn in 1986 it was part of a major collection designed by Vivienne Westwood. The V&A includes information about the minicrini collection that Westwood launched in Spring/Summer 1985 which "...marked what Westwood described as a "cardinal change" – a shift towards tailoring and "things that fitted" – and a more deliberate focus on reworking ideas taken from historical dress. The stand-out garment of Mini-Crini was Westwood's short, bell-shaped skirt – another cheekily sexual garment that combined the outline of a child's party frock with an abbreviated version of the Victorian crinoline."The McIntyre Collection of clothing and clothing accessories forms one of the largest single donations to our Fashion & Design collection. It includes clothing and clothing accessories worn by four women in the Cohen and McIntyre families across three generations. The items worn by Melbourne architect, and Kew resident, Dione McIntyre date from the 1960s and 1970s, and include evening wear, day wear, hats and shoes. As Dione McIntyre often accompanied her husband, fellow architect Peter McIntyre, to formal events, there are a number of pieces of evening wear among the items. The McIntyre Collection also includes items worn by women of an earlier generation: by Lilian Cohen, Dione McIntyre's mother, and by her mother-in-law, the wife of the architect Robert McIntyre.
