Ceremonial object - Badge, City of Brighton Mayoral robe badges
This pair of embroidered badges were worn on the sleeves of the red City of Brighton Mayoral robes until Coat of Arms were granted in 1970 by the British College of Heraldry. Brighton was first incorporated as a borough on 18 January 1859, it became a town on 18 March 1887 and was proclaimed a city on 12 March 1919.Two oval shaped City of Brighton mayoral robe badges, embroidered and mounted on red felt. The badges have a black border with CITY OF BRIGHTON embroidered on the top and the British Coat of Arms on the bottom. This Soldiers' Memorial Hall still stands today in Pall Mall, Bendigo. These are two administrative record books from the Warrnambool Town Council which took over from the Warrnambool Borough Council in 1883 and existed until 1918 when it became the Warrnambool City Council. .1 Warrnambool Town Council letter book dating from 1904 to 1918 containing copies of letters written by the Rate Collector, Thomas Beattie .2 Warrnambool Town Council Contract Book dating from 1902 to 1909. The contract details include the name of the supplier or tradesman and the costs. Some of the contracts deal with the Corporation Baths, the Botanic Gardens and town tree planting. Thomas Wilson (1838-1923) was a local councillor in Brighton (in its three phases as Borough, Town and City) representing the central ward over a 57-year period, firstly in 1866-79 and again in 1894-1923. He was elected as mayor seven times, as Borough of Brighton in 1869, Town of Brighton in 1895-96, 1905 and 1912-13, and was the second Mayor of the City of Brighton in 1919. He was also a land speculator and both Wilson and his father William Wilson owned considerable land in the area. William Wilson sold land on the corner of Wilson and Carpenter Streets to the Council for its Town Hall. Illuminated address received by James Ross Briggs Esq. on the occassion of his retirement as Town Clerk and Treasurer by the Mayor, Councillors and Citizens of the City of Caulfield. 2 page watercolour and ink address bound in maroon and gold tooled leather folder, The address, presented on cream colour card, is secured inside the folder by a piece of maroon colour rope ribbon and strip of leather running vertically down the centre. The address is hand lettered in red and black ink and watercolour decorations include James Ross Briggs name in a scroll surrounded by sprigs of yellow wattle and a blue, pink and yellow decorative border. A red, paper seal has been placed beside the signatures of the Mayor, Town Clerk and Councillors. The earliest item dates from 1964, and is a letter from W. D. Birrell, Town Clerk to the Secretary of the Historical Society. The file also includes a National Trust of Victoria listing of classified buildings as of 1981. The most interesting documents in the file are the City of Kew Heritage Advice Note 1-4, compiled in 1991 and which provides advice on Protecting Heritage through Planning, Victorian Buildings, Edwardian Buildings, and 1930s-1940s houses. Yields information about one of the first two maximum traction bogie trams in Ballarat in October 1945 after it had been repainted for use in Ballarat by the SEC and a little photographed single truck tram No. 24. Bottle - Cordial
Cordial was bought at the local grocery shop or supermarket in the bigger towns/cities. Glass bottles were used for cordial concentrate before plastic became more popular and cheaper. These bottles came in many shapes and sizes.Small clear glass bottle with rectangular base, straight sides two thirds of the way up and then tapering gradually to the opening. It has a metal goldish coloured lid. The label on the back gives directions for making cordial. The label on the front is blue and white and torn with only about one quarter of it left.Embossed on base: 861 On the label, my guess would be: (concentr)ated / (Li)me/ (Le)mon / ...ar syrup cordial bottle
