The Hamilton-Smith collection was donated by the children of Grace Mary Hamilton-Smith nee Ellwood (1911-2004) and John Hamilton-Smith (1909-1984) who settled in Wodonga in the 1940s. The Ellwood family had lived in north-east Victoria since the late 1800s. Grace’s mother, Rosina Ellwood nee Smale, was the first teacher at Baranduda in 1888, and a foundation member of the C.W.A. Rosina and her husband Mark retired to Wodonga in 1934. Grace and John married at St. David’s Church, Albury in 1941. John was a grazier, and actively involved in Agricultural Societies. The collection contains significant items which reflect the local history of Wodonga, including handmade needlework, books, photographs, a wedding dress, maps, and material relating to the world wars. This item has well documented provenance and a known owner. It forms part of a significant and representative historical collection which reflects the local history of Wodonga. It contributes to our understanding of social and family life in early twentieth century Wodonga, as well as providing interpretative capacity for themes including local, social, and sporting history. In the 1950s and 60s what we know as netball today was played by women and was known as basketball. No information has been found on this Warrnambool Basketball Association but it is most probable, however, that it was an early organization of men’s basketball teams. The game of basketball, founded in America, has become much more popular in Australia for both men and women in the last three or four decades with the local organization in Warrnambool known as Warrnambool Basketball Inc. and the teams Warrnambool Seahawks and Mermaids playing in a state-wide competition. This badge is retained for display purposes as an example of a sporting badge from the mid 20th century.This is a metal badge in the shape of a shield with gold lettering on a brown background and gold-coloured images of a net and ball on a green background. Rennie Ellis was an Australian documentary photographer and a key figure in Australian visual culture. Grand Final breakfast 1982 depicts a cluttered table during a football Grand Final day breakfast. The messily covered tablecloth, as well as the appearance of alcohol at a morning event, displays the signature larrikin attitude and passion with which football events are undertaken in Australia. This work was shown in the 2017 Counihan Gallery exhibition Leather Poisoning, along with many other works by Ellis, capturing the nation’s love of the game. Dave Scott was born at Montrose, Scotland in 1847 and came to Australia when a boy, and settled with his parents in the Bendigo district. He was closely associated with cricket and cricketers all his life. He was a man with a wonderful knowledge of the game, and of the men who played it. He died in 1922. Obituary may be found on Trove. Victorian Ice Hockey Association fixtures for 1955 at St Moritz Ice Palais, Upper Esplanade St Kilda, and the Glaciarium (also known as the Glaci), City Road South Melbourne. The St. Moritz Ice-skating Palais (its original name) opened in 1939 and operated until 1981. The building was damaged by fire and demolished soon afterwards. The Glaci opened in 1906, at which time it was the 3rd largest indoor ice rink in the world. It hosted the first game of ice hockey played in Australia. It closed in 1957 and the building was destroyed by fire in 1963.
