This Minton floor tile is from the wreck of the LOCH ARD. Other examples of this manufacture have been recovered from the wreck site and form part of the collection at Flagstaff Hill. The iron-hulled clipper ship from the Loch Line was heading for Port Phillip from London when it ran into the cliffs of Mutton Bird Island near Port Campbell and was wrecked on the early morning of June 1, 1878. The LOCH ARD was laden with high-value cargo including luxury goods intended for display at the Melbourne International Exhibition in 1880. One notable survivor from the ship’s freight manifest was the well-packed Minton porcelain peacock, a two-metre-high ceramic masterpiece of vivid glazed colours. The almost total loss of life and property from the LOCH ARD registered as a shocking tragedy for the Colony of Victoria, at a time when social confidence and economic optimism were otherwise high. The wealth generated from gold and wool was increasingly being spent on magnificent private residences and imposing public buildings. The demand for quality furnishings and fittings was therefore strong. Among the products consigned to burgeoning colonial markets by the Milton Pottery at Stoke upon Trent were their new range of colourfully patterned but very durable floor tiles – ideal for the high-traffic spaces in the large civic buildings then being constructed in Australia and America. These new floor tiles were “encaustic”, meaning that their designs and colours were encased within the depth of the tile. Rather than their decorative patterns being glazed onto the surface of the tile, their inlaid designs were created during the manufacturing process, as “coloured slips” (or liquid clay) that were poured into a deep pre-moulded casting. When fired, the resulting tile was colour-fast and design-fast.The Minton encaustic floor tile is significant for its method of manufacture which makes it durable as well as decorative. This is a Warrnambool souvenir item made about the 1940s. It features the Warrnambool War Memorial which is a Warrnambool landmark popular with the makers of souvenir items for sale to local residents and tourists to the city. The War Memorial was originally designed as a memorial to the local soldiers who enlisted and died during World War One. It was built in 1924 and first used for an official function in 1925. A World War Two memorial section added was added in the 1950s. These items are of interest as examples of the souvenirs made to sell to tourists sixty years ago. The items were made of good quality bone china. The Warrnambool War Memorial still features today on some items sold as souvenirs of the City.This is a white bone china cup and saucer set - a Warrnambool souvenir piece. It has a black and white image of the Warrnambool War Memorial on the side of the cup and on the base of the saucer. There is gilding on the edges of the cup and its handle and on the saucer. This medicine glass was previously owned by Sybilla Margaret Kucks (1904-1978), daughter of Henry and Julia Kucks, and granddaughter of William and Sibilia Kucks. Sibilla was born in Warrnambool and lived there until 1917 when she moved to Armadale, Victoria, with her family. The medicine glass was among her effects left to her nephew William when she passed away and has been looked after by his wife Eva and treasured as a memento of their Warrnambool heritage. Mrs Sibilla Kucks sold sweets and fancy cakes in her Liebig Street shop from 1873 until the 1880s. She operated one of Warrnambool’s earliest dedicated confectionery shops at a time when sweets were more commonly found in a fruiterer’s shop. Her window display would have been full of brightly coloured sweets in shiny glass jars tempting passers-by. Sibilla (née Leyendecker) married Johann Wilhelm Kucks in New York, USA in 1856. Both were originally from Prussia. They sailed to Australia on the Ocean Rover and arrived in Melbourne June 10th, 1858. Seventeen days later their second child, William Jnr., was born. Warrnambool’s population was around 2,000 in 1859 when Sibilla and Johann (known as “William”) settled here. William was employed as a tailor by Cramond & Dickson. In 1859 the couple bought George Fergusson’s bakery in Timor Street and opened it as “W. Kucks Baker”. Along with fancy breads and biscuits, he advertised baked dinners to order. William supplied bread to the Warrnambool Hospital until the 1880s. In 1873 William built a row of four shops at 140-146 Liebig Street, one of which became Sibilla’s confectionery shop, and another was the new home to W. Kucks Baker. In 1877 William constructed a building in Liebig Street for the Warrnambool Steam Packet Company, which has since been incorporated into the Warrnambool Art Gallery. Its western wall shows to older construction and design. William and Sibilla had five other children. By 1896 their sons William Jnr. and Henry operated the business as “Messrs Kucks Bros., Bakers & Confectioners”. They employed six staff and used three carts for deliveries over a thirty-mile radius. They catered for clubs and functions including the Exhibitors’ Picnic Luncheon for the Warrnambool Industrial and Arts Exhibition (1896-7). In 1907 Messrs Kucks Bros. baked a monster Pyramid Cake for a local bazaar. It contained coins of various sizes and weighed 84lbs (38kg). Everyone buying a slice hoped to be lucky enough to end up with a coin! William Kucks Jnr. also became licensee of Terang’s ”Wheatsheaf Hotel”, its name and logo connecting it to the family’s bakery in Warrnambool. William (1825-1911) and Sibilla (1833-1910) Kucks and three of their seven children are buried at the Warrnambool Cemetery in a family grave. John Sambell migrated from England and established his chemist and dentist business in Warrnambool around 1890 in his premises in Fairy Street. The business later included his son Herbert. The maker, Whitall Tatum & Co, is clearly marked on the base of the bottle. The company was a a well known maker of prescription bottles. He used the brand "W. T. & Co. from Mid-1870's until the late 1880's, moulded into his glassware. This medicine glass is significant as one of very few remaining items from the history of John Sambell, chemist and dentist, Warrnambool. It is also significant as an example of medical equipment that has a design still used today. It is also significant for its association with William and Sibilla Kucks, a colonial family in Warrnambool that was greatly involved in the community and commerce of early days in Warrnambool.Medicine glass, (measuring glass or dose cup), clear glass, round. The antique chemist measuring glass is wide at the top and tapers to a narrow base. The glass has side seams and an uneven base. The glass has imperfections ans bubbles. The base is uneven. The measuring scale lines have been scored into the glass and the measurements and other inscriptions have been moulded into the glass. Glass is from J. Sambell, chemist and dentist in Warrnambool. On the back there is a measuring scale in tablespoons and teaspoons. There is also an inscription of the maker on the base. The glass was made in the late 1880's by Whitall Tatum & Co., America.Embossed within a round border "J. Georg Chodziesner made this chanukiah in Hay Camp in 1940. It was made to celebrate the Jewish festival of Chanukah. Georg was born in 1900 in Berlin to a prominent Jewish advocate Justizrat, Ludwig and wife Elise. Fearing arrest at the outbreak of war, Georg fled Germany to the United Kingdom. His wife, Dorothea, and son, Wolfgang Benno, emigrated to Chile. Like many German Jewish men, Georg found himself on board the HMT Dunera, bound for interment at Tatura. On release, Georg joined the Australian Army 8th Employment Company in which he served for the remainder of the war. Georg sought permission for his son to join him in Australia, and the pair were reunited in Melbourne in May 1945. Dorothea had passed away from illness in 1943. After settling in Australia, Georg worked as a Patent Attorney and remained working at the same firm until his death in 1981.This Chanukiah was cut from a kerosene tin using nail scissors and mounted on a wood block base. The kerosene lamp was one of the most common oil lamps used and was manufactured until the 1980s. This particular lamp has the design of the early kerosene lamps. Its gimbal bracket and counterweight heavy base allow it to swing with a vessel's movement and still stay horizontal. The lamp is significant for its design which is an example of a 19th and early 20th-century kerosene lamp with a wall-mounted gimbal bracket and counterweight base. These features were important to vessels at sea, allowing the lamp to swing with the vessel's movement and stay vertical on rough seas.Kerosene lamp; round electroplated metal top and base, both shaped inward to join together. The only information available on this plate is what is written on the base. No other information has been found on Mrs Playford or Thomas and Mary Annerley. Perhaps the plate came to into the collection of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society via the old Warrnambool Museum. The plate has no known local provenance and is kept because of its age and interesting monogram. This is a circular-shaped china plate (probably a dinner plate) with a fluted edge. The edging of the plate has red and gold ornamentation with garlands of flowers in green, pink, mauve and orange. There are four posies of flowers around the bowl of the plate in the same colouring with the addition of blue. In the centre of the plate is a large gold monogram – ‘T.M.A.’ On the base of the plate is a piece of paper partly torn off giving some details of the history of the plate in handwriting. This paper is pasted on to the base of the plate obscuring any maker’s mark that there may be. The plate has been broken into four pieces and stuck together again using five metal clips. There are some chips around the edge of the plate. The handle is also a battery deposit to supply the led light bulb. The blade has general deep scratches on its surface and a slight metal deformation on top back of the blade. At the back of the blade is still attached the hinge that keeps in regular position the base and the blade, is also present a worn surface in this area. The joystick has been held by the Barber family since the crash in 1945. It had been kept as a momento to the witnessing of the incident involving an aeroplane from the Nhill Air Training School. In recent times the joystick has been mounted on a display base and loaned to the Nhill Aviation Heritage Centre to add to the awairness of this event. Huddart Parker traded between 1876 and 1961. It was established in 1876 by James Huddart, T.J. Parker, John Traill and Captain T. Webb. The business rapidly expanded and was travelling between Melbourne and Sydney by 1882 and Melbourne to Adelaide from 1886. The Company was established in Geelong but moved its offices to Melbourne by 1890. It is likely this saucer was used on the Huddart Parker shipping line some time between 1876 and 1961. Historically, the early establishment of the company in Geelong is significant for the region. The bottle was donated to the museum by Ron and Joan Parker for use in the exhibition ' A history of the Vineyards in Sunbury' held in the George Evans Museum in 1996. The vineyard was planted in 1992.Conventional bronze green glass bottle with indented base. Cream, gold & maroon printed labels. On the front there is a map impression of Longview Gorge in Sunbury. This plate was painted by J.J. Forrester in 1922. John James Forrester, the son of John Lamb Forrester and Maria Hexter, was an architect in Warrnambool in the early 20th century. He had an office in Kepler Street (1910) and in Koroit Street (1916). He lived in the house in Liebig Street that was formerly the first Savings Bank and was erected in 1860 (7A Liebig Street today). Forrester was a staunch member of the Presbyterian Church and was the co-architect for the re-building of the interior of St. John’s Presbyterian Church in Warrnambool after it was destroyed by fire in 1920. John Forrester was also a noted artist of his time and several of his works of art have survived. A landscape by him is in the possession of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society. This plate is one of two painted by Forrester that survive today.This plate, although damaged, is of interest because it was painted by John James Forrester, a Warrnambool artist from the early 20th century. This is a china plate showing a seascape painted by John James Forrester in 1922. It depicts a coastal scene of rocks, birds and sailing boats. The colours are in mauve/brown/ white tonings and are slightly opalescent. The plate has brown/grey handles with one broken and repaired. The plate is oval-shaped with a slight dip and a stand at the base. Front of plate: ‘J.J.F.’ On base: ‘J.J.
