Document - Patent Applications - Trolley Pole safety appliance, Percy Ireland, 1920
Percy Markham Ireland (1893-1976), a tramway rolling stock engineer with the MMTB and a Military engineer applied in 1920 for a patent for a "Trolley Pole safety appliance for electric trams and the like". He was successful in gaining a patent in a number of countries including the UK, France, Germany, Canada, the USA, and New Zealand. The associated documents show the differences in making patent applications in various countries. From research undertaken by the Museum it appears that while his patent applications were successful, his invention was never actually implemented on tramcars in Melbourne". Collected by Noelle Jones as research for an article in the March 2023 issue of the Museum's magazine Bellcord, giving details of Mr Ireland's tramway and military career. He retired as the MMTB Rolling Stock Engineer in 1958 after 44 years of service.Yields information about patents applied for by Percy Ireland in different countries.Set of digital patent documents for Australia, USA, UK, France, Germany and Canada. tramways, patents, trolley poles, percy ireland, safety devices -

Photograph - postcard, Cam Williamson, World War One AIF Soldiers at the Suez, c1916
Harry Holmes and his battalion friends photographed aspects of their time on the Suez Canal, Egypt. Egypt was a major base for the AIF from December 1914. A number of campaigns were fought in this theatre. There were two campaigns involving the AIF. Note that not all the fighting was actually geographically in Egypt. (http://www.aif.adfa.edu.au:8888/about3.html) This photograph is significant because it was taken by a soldier (rather than an official war artist) and shows one of the day to day activities experienced by Australian Soldiers in Egypt during World War One.1) Four Australian soldiers during World War One in Egypt .2) Soldiers watch while two men 'fight' on a greasy pole during World War One .3) Australian soldiers stand at the grave of a German Officer at the Suez Canal, Egypt.2) Verso - "greasy Pole Fight" .3) verso: - Snap taken at grave of German officer killed in the first tussel (sic) with Turk at the Canalchatham family archive, chatham, holmes, world war, world war 1, world war i, world war one, egypt, cam williamson, greasy pole, ship, vessel, burial -

Functional object - Hurricane Lantern, Nier Feuerhand, Between 1915-1920
The Feuerhand lantern works were established in Beierfeld in the Saxon Ore Mountains. Called Erzgebirge in German or Krušné hory in Czech, is a mountain range in the south of Saxony in Germany known for its craftwork. Lantern production began in the area by Hermann Nier who ran a plumber's workshop around the 1870s and made lanterns, amongst other things. In the town of Beierfeld, also well-known for its metalworking were the brothers Hermann and Ernst Nier who founded a modern production centre for hurricane lanterns manufacture in 1893. Five years after the foundation, the company Frankonia (Albert Frank metalware) bought up the production site and the brothers Nier became production managers. Owing to differences with Frankonia, Hermann Nier finally started its hurricane lantern factory "Hermann Nier Feuerhandwerk" in 1902. In the same year, he applied for a patent for the manufacturing of lanterns using the stamping and folding techniques with tinning by hot-dipping and without hand-soldering. In 1914 the trademark "Feuerhand" was registered for all products as a utility model of the German Reich in German: "Deutsches Reichs-Gebrauchsmuster" (DRGM) and in 1920 the round Feuerhand emblem was added to the brand. Finally, in 1926 the patents, as well as the trademark "Firehand", were also registered in the USA. The manufacture of the well-known small hurricane lanterns the “Baby Series” complete with fireproof borosilicate glass from the Firma Schott firm from Jena started in 1933. Between 1918 and 1938 Nier Feuerhand became the biggest producer of hurricane lanterns in the world. Production continued until 1990.A significant item that demonstrates from its fabrication a manufacturing process that was far in advance of its time and that influenced the production of lanterns from many other manufactures around the world. These types of lanterns made by Feuerhand around the early 20th century are now sought after by collectors.Monarch style Lantern painted black. Instrument - Chronometer or Marine Clock, ca. 1935 to 1975
This chronometer was made around 1936 and has been on display at Flagstaff Hill for over 40 years as part of the exhibit of the ‘Reginald M’, an Australian-built, 19ss, coastal trader vessel. A chronometer is an accurate mechanical instrument used for measuring time. It is constructed carefully to remain stable even under the changing conditions of seafaring life such as temperature, humidity and air pressure. The Master or Navigator of a ship could use the chronometer and the positions of celestial bodies to calculate the ship’s latitude at sea. In 1905 the business Chronometerwerke GmbH was formed in Frankfurt, Germany, to supply the country with high-quality mechanical chronometers and ship clocks for their maritime trade, making the country independent of other international suppliers such as those in England. In 1938 the firm was renamed Wempe Chronometerwerke. The business continues today. Its products now include its well-known chronometers, battery-powered ship clocks, ship’s bell clocks, barometers, barographs, thermometers, hygrometers, comfort meters to measure temperature and humidity, and wristwatches. The company also performs chronometer testing facilities for the State’s Weights and Measures office. The article written by Givi in July 2022 “The Basics of Marine Meteorology – a Guide for Seafarers” refers to the weather’s signs and patterns being repeated over and over, and the recording of these observations helps forecasters predict changes in the weather. The chronometer is an example of a mechanical navigational marine instrument in use in the early to the mid-20th century. The maker is significant as part of a German government initiative to be self-sufficient in the production of good quality marine technology. This chronometer is significant as part of the exhibit, the Australian-built vessel, 1922 coastal trader ‘Reginald M’, listed on the Australian Register of Historic Vessels and on display for over 40 years.Marine chronometer or marine clock, brass case, glass cover, Roman numerals, 24-hour numbers beside them. Two black hands, a keyhole for winding and ventilation holes in the side. The base has a collar with four machined mounting holes. Inscriptions are on the clock’s face."Made in Germany"" and ""WEMPE / CHRONOMETERWERKE / HAMBURG"flagstaff hill, flagstaff hill maritime museum and village, warrnambool, maritime museum, maritime village, great ocean road, shipwreck coast, marine meteorology, horology, chronometer, marine technology, latitude, marine navigation, mechanical instrument, scientific instrument, ship clock, chromometerwerke gmbh, wempe chronometerwerke, marine clock -
