At the latter end of 1851, a few enterprising pioneers, with Captain Harrison, now police magistrate of Castlemaine, made their way from Forest Creek ( Castlemaine ) 30 miles distant, to a place on the Bendigo Creek, now called Golden Square, then a squatter's run, where rich auriferous ground was met with. The new soon spread far and near, and the world was soon startled with the intelligence that another very extensive goldfield had been discovered, the importance of which may be gathered from the fact that in the month of June, in the following year, six months after the first sod was raised, 80,000 ounces of pure native gold was taken by Melbourne.Printer: W. The subject item was made by G. Pearson and Co Ltd. of the Hope Works, Sheffield England. This company was established in 1854. By 1914 the company was manufacturing many differing types of edge tools, joiners' tools, forks and garden tools. Their specialities were hay, manure and coke forks, punches, armourers' tools etc. In 1938 the Company was styled F. G. Pearson and Co (Sheffield) Ltd and they were still making plane and other sharp edged blades as late as 1957, but by the 1970s they had gone out of business.A significant company based in Sheffield England and making tools of all types and exporting same to various countries around the world. Painted from Gardenia Road. The extensive farm complex on the right. (Western side of Gardenia Road). was demolished in 1972 for housing development. Buildings shown are cowshed, hay barn, engine shed and stables. Painted in the late afternoon, the lengthening shadows and lowering sky, could presage the ominous fate awaiting the farm with development. The Ziebell Farm was known as “The Pines” and sadly none of the many that proliferated there remain. Today they would be equivalent to those at the cemetery, having been planted at the same time. John Lundy-Clarke grew up in the Kalorama/Mt Dandenong area and later in life (1972-74) began to write a comprehensive history of the area working from an original settlement map in an effort to cover all areas. Taken c1913, this photograph gives a clear indication of where significant buildings were located in relation to one another. Barbers Road is running through the picture with the guest house 'Kia-Ora' , built by George Barber in the centre. High on the skyline on the left is the 'Mountjoy' guesthouse, indicating the location of The Gap, or FiveWays. The small 'boxy' house above 'Kia-Ora' is 'Iona' built by the Paynter family who also built 'Mountjoy'. The Jeeves property 'Kalorama' is to the right of 'Iona' and this is the area you now look to from the FiveWays Lookout. The man in the photo is wearing a trilby hat so is probably a Rose Series employee - a feature in many Rose Series postcards.Black and white photograph that is a copy of Rose Series Postcard # 156. This store was built in 1881 and opened as a branch of Pearce Brothers main store which was further along in Main Street, Bacchus Marsh. The store in this image opened around early June 1881 and was described in the Bacchus Marsh Express as "quite above the usual standard of stores in towns of a similar or even much larger size. The building is most substantially built of brick, and measures 58 feet by 26 feet, with walls fourteen feet high inside. The interior is most elaborately fitted with shelves and glass cases covering both side walls and two ends formed by small offices separated from the main store by glass and wood panelled partitions, with a passage way between to the storeroom at the rear", Express, (Bacchus Marsh, 11 June, 1881, page 2). The building was designed by one of its proprietors T. G. Pearce and was entirely constructed by local contractors and workers.Small sepia unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. Goods such as spades, shovels, tubs and wringers are arrayed on the footpath in front of the store. At the front of the shop under a verandah stands a man, possibly one of the Pearce brothers who owned this business. Next to the store is a vacant block of land with a white picket fence. A sign erected above the fence advertises: “ Pearce Bros. Chaff. Hay & Oats. Produce. Dealer. “On the front: Stevenson & McNicoll. Photo. 108 Elizabeth St. Melbourne. In 1911 the late Mrs. Hay’s estate was in the preliminary stages of dispersal and the hotel known as Minns was sold to a Mr McDowell of South Melbourne. Mr. McDowell lived in Melton for five and a half years, and it was during this time that the cottage was erected in High Street and the hotel became Macs. Mr McDowell sold the property to the McNichol family, who did not live in the cottage. Mrs McNichol’s sister later married A. McDonald of Melton South and occupancy was continued from that time. The factory was situated at the Black Bull Inn, on the corner of Howick and Bentinck Streets, and a variety of prize-winning horse-drawn conveyances were built on the site (including an unsuccessful single-wheel vehicle to cater for rough and steep country).
