A brochure explaining Legacy's work and the facilities they provide. It is aimed at the widows to inform them of what is available to them and it outlines the times for classes for the children. The earliest copy in 1944 included the charter of Legacy and headings in red printing. 'Melbourne Legacy offers friendship and help to the dependants of our departed comrades.' Headings included: Help and advice to mothers or guardians; Mothers' Club; Senior Widows' Club; Housing and repairs; Legal advice; Medical, dental and optical care; Education, Employment, Camps and holidays, Christmas party, Residences, Junior Legacy groups. The notation H26 in red pen shows that it was part of the archive project that was trying to capture the history of Legacy. Surrey Hills Golf Club operated from 1892-1908 then moved and became Riversdale Golf Club. The game was played across paddocks from Trafalgar Street, Mont Albert to Whitehorse Road and down Victoria Crescent to where Box Hill TAFE is now located in Elgar Road. There were problems with cows eating the tee flags! The clubhouse still exists as 30 Trafalgar Street. The Surrey Hills Golf Club was founded by Mr Hugh W McLeod in 1894. The first president was Mr A W Harston. Mr William Meader was the first honorary secretary and the club champion for several years. Medal struck for the 24th International Congress of the International Society of the History of Medicine, held in Budapest in 1974. This medal was given to contributors to the congress. Dr Frank Forster delivered a paper at this congress. There are some slides relating to Ignac Semmelweis in Frank Forster's slide collection under the heading of 'Budapest'.Ignac Semmelweis is credited with discovering the cause of puerperal sepsis, by establishing a link to the infectious material carried on the hands of students and doctors from the autopsy room into the maternity ward. The Kiewa Valley Rifle Club belonged to the Australian Rifle Clubs. They were in Military district No. 304 and operated as early as the 1920s. In 1876 an Australian Rifle Team, consisting of shooters from N.S.W. and Victoria, was the first team ever to officially represent Australia in any sport in international competition. In 1885 the first civilian Rifle Club was formed and after 1901 Rifle Clubs came under army control. In 1921, they were reconstituted as a purely civilian organisation where they have remained ever since.This ledger is evidence that the Kiewa Valley Rifle Club existed in the 1920's and 1930's, enabling its members to participate in a sport that had 12232 members and 313 Rifle Clubs in Victoria by 1939.Large yellowed alphabetical ledger covering the 1920's and 1930's with names, age, height, occupation and date of enrolment. Found in the National Wool Museum, may have been used in the wool brokers office display. Although it is unclear, we believe it may be the original wool broker ledger for one of the agents working out of the Dennys Lascelles building. Ledger contains an alphabetic list (by surname) of all wool growers who sold through this agent/broker, including name, number of bales/fadges/sacks, property address, bale stencil used, stock agent rebate and date of arrival. There is also a list of new clients on the back pages.Cloth-bound cardboard front and back cover ledger. Covers are navy blue and spine is black. Faded white sticker on front indicates the year. Denis Gibbons (1937 – 2011) Trained with the Australian Army, before travelling to Vietnam in January 1966, Denis stayed with the 1st Australian Task Force in Nui Dat working as a photographer. For almost five years Gibbons toured with nine Australian infantry battalions, posting compelling war images from within many combat zones before being flown out in late November 1970 after sustaining injuries. The West Kiewa Tunnel (tailrace tunnel) was commenced from both ends in 1947. Very difficult conditions were encountered in the driving of this tunnel and this meant the immediate provision of support and later the lining of the tunnel with concrete. Work proceeded steadily and the breakthrough of the two headings occurred on 22nd July, 1950.This historical photograph shows in detail the amount of work necessary to stabilise and support the tunnel walls before lining with concrete. No solid rock was found and the tunneling proceeded through decomposed boulders, gravel and clay, hence the necessity for support and concreting. The Trust was set up as a memorial to Sir Stanley Savige. The object of the Trust was to further the work of the Junior Legacy movement in Melbourne.
