By 2025, 100 new trams will be designed and built due to a $1.5 billion government injection to fund 100 ‘‘next-generation trams’’, replacing A and Z-Class trams. Two manufacturers have been shortlisted to design and build the trams: French rail manufacturer Alstom and a joint venture comprising Spanish rail maker CAF and UGL. At 25 metres long – about eight metres shorter than the newest E-Class trams – the trams will carry 150 passengers, fewer than the E-Class, which carry 210 people. Despite the smaller size, seating will remain proportionally comparable with the E-Class, with 48 people or a third of passengers getting a seat on the new fleet. Age newspaper 24.10.1898. This newspaper was used as packing for a picture in the children's room, and the paper would have been read by August Schwerkolt. The house was purchased by Whitehorse Council, and pulled down in 1924. It was situated at the top end of Bourke Street near Spring Street.This would have been one of the earlier businesses which Ithacans owned in the Melbourne CBD. Melbourne's new orange-coloured super trams have been designed for an era of one-man operators and women drivers. Cheaper to run. Passengers should find them more comfortable and faster. Will go into service early next month (April?). MMTB Chairman, RF Kirby said board would like to recruit women drivers for trams, especially new super trams. "...very keen to have women tram drivers. But union has objected." Kirby said board had no immediate plans for introduction of one-man operators but trams could be easily adapted. One-man operations could be used in off-peak periods. State Government recently approved calling of tenders for 100 new trams to replace Melbourne's oldest trams. 300 trams are 50 years old. New tram is 53 feet long and 8 feet 9 inches wide.
