Western Aranda artist, Gerhard Inkamala. Born in 1917, Gerhard was the nephew of Albert Namatjira and grew up being inspired by his artwork and the surrounding landscapes. He became a skilled artist and during the 1940s was one of the founders of the famous Hermannsburg School of Art. In the 1950s Gerhard and his brother Adolf were included in a group exhibition in Alice Springs at the home of Rex Battarbee who was the Warrnambool-born art teacher of Albert Namatjira. He died in 1977.A landscape scene showing the Australian outback. Trees and shrubs in the foreground with rocky hills in the background. Chris. Christiansen had a barber shop in Sunbury and was the photographer in the town from 1895 until 1916. He conducted his business in a building situated on the corner of Evans and Brooks Streets. The Gillies Bridge is situated on the Wildwood Road, just off the Lancefield Road.A mounted sepia photograph of the Gillies Bridge at Sunbury. Collection of thirty-nine postcards donated by Jillian Rigby which had been owned by her grandparents, George and Edith Weir, who from c.1917 lived at 84 Princess Street, Kew. The mostly 'mint' postcards were purchased in Victoria and while travelling overseas. The sole dated postcard is dated from 1929. The postcards are numbered sequentially from 2017.0058.01-39. The remainder of the collection donated by Jill Rigby which was once owned by the Weirs of Broken Hill and Kew consist of costumes, costume accessories, photographs, and documents.The postcards in the Weir collection, especially those purchased on a trip or trips to the mother country, i.e. United Kingdom, represent a representative sample of sites that were considered significant to those Australians undertaking a reverse grand tour by member of the erstwhile colonies. Those postcards which are early views of Melbourne must have been produced commercially for some decades from the early part of the 20th century.Newhaven is in Edinburgh, Scotland. Portraits of fishwives were popular subjects for postcards due to the colourful, layered, striped outfits that they wore. The fishwife sits on rocks beside a basket of fish. The postcard would appear to be a studio portrait. Geological specimen - Pyrite
This specimen was recovered from Adelong, NSW. The initial discovery of gold at Adelong by a Mr Williams took place in 1857. Much of the area is underlain by granitic rocks, while at Adelong itself a prominent norite intrusive body occurs. To the west of Adelong is a belt of intermediate to mafic igneous rocks and sediments which extends from Batlow in the south to at least as far north as the Snowy Mountains Highway. Around 26 tonnes of gold was found at the Adelong goldfield from its discovery in the 1850s until the last miners left in the 1940s. Pyrite has the formula of FeS2 and forms as an isometric (cube) form. It is a common occurring material and is often mistaken for gold, now colloquially known as ‘fool’s gold’. Pyrite that has strongly crystallised is considered stable, but the mineral has the potential to oxidise and decay. This specimen is part of a larger collection of geological and mineral specimens collected from around Australia (and some parts of the world) and donated to the Burke Museum between 1868-1880. A large percentage of these specimens were collected in Victoria as part of the Geological Survey of Victoria that begun in 1852 (in response to the Gold Rush) to study and map the geology of Victoria. Collecting geological specimens was an important part of mapping and understanding the scientific makeup of the earth. Photographs of title documents related to the Sister’s Rocks. c 1867. In 1866 a photographer Mr. O.G. Armstrong feared the Sister's Rock's would be used for building material. Mr. Armstrong and Samuel John Davidson squatter of Great Western leased the ground around the Rock's under the 42nd section of then existing "Land Act" enclosing the rocks with a rough fence. Davidson's lease application was dated 30th Jan 1867. The area applied for was 10 acres and issued 2nd July 1867. The fee paid 2 pound 10 shillings annually till July 1871 when an application to purchase was lodged. Two years later the land was transferred to the Borough of Stawell. Geological specimen - Slice Dendrites on Sandstone, Unknown
Dendrites are deposits of black minerals, typically manganese oxides that precipitated from water seeping through fractures in fine-grain rocks like a sandstone or limestone. Dendrites are much less regular than plant fossils and lacks vein structures. The manganese cryztallizes through the process called 'supercooling'. Some samples of dendrites occur in volcanic rocks in the Lilydale district, east of Melbourne. Sandstones are made of tiny sand grains that may have been deposited in the sea and later formed together. Most sandstones are made of quartz which are chemically-resistant minerals. This particular specimen was donated by Alfred Selwyn in 1868 as part of the Geological Survey of Victoria. It is connected to the original 1875 catalogue on Geological Specimen with number 189 'Quartz Crystals_Quartz Crystals (two are polished)'Dendrites on sandstones This specimen is an important contribution to the geological history of Victoria, as well as its links to the 1868 Geological Survey of Victoria. This specimen is part of larger collection of significant geological specimens in the Burke Museum that was collected from around the world between 1868-1880. A large percentage of these specimens were collection as part of the Geological Survey of Victoria 1852-1974. The Geological Survey of Victoria was an organisation founded in response to the Victorian gold rush to explore the geological and mineral resources and to record a detailed map of the state. It was headed by British geologist, Alfred Richard Cecil Selwyn (1824-1902), who was responsible for issuing over 60 geological maps during his 17 years as director. These maps were all hand-drawn and coloured and became the benchmark for accuracy for geological mapping. Collecting geological specimens was an important part of mapping and understanding the scientific makeup of the earth. Many of these specimens were sent to research and collecting organisations across Australia, including the Burke Museum, to educate and encourage further study. This plate was painted by J.J. Forrester in 1922. John James Forrester, the son of John Lamb Forrester and Maria Hexter, was an architect in Warrnambool in the early 20th century. He had an office in Kepler Street (1910) and in Koroit Street (1916). He lived in the house in Liebig Street that was formerly the first Savings Bank and was erected in 1860 (7A Liebig Street today). Forrester was a staunch member of the Presbyterian Church and was the co-architect for the re-building of the interior of St. John’s Presbyterian Church in Warrnambool after it was destroyed by fire in 1920. John Forrester was also a noted artist of his time and several of his works of art have survived. A landscape by him is in the possession of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society. This plate is one of two painted by Forrester that survive today.This plate, although damaged, is of interest because it was painted by John James Forrester, a Warrnambool artist from the early 20th century. This is a china plate showing a seascape painted by John James Forrester in 1922. It depicts a coastal scene of rocks, birds and sailing boats. The colours are in mauve/brown/ white tonings and are slightly opalescent. The plate has brown/grey handles with one broken and repaired. The plate is oval-shaped with a slight dip and a stand at the base. Front of plate: ‘J.J.F.’ On base: ‘J.J. The coloured postcard depicts the Port of Warrnambool in the early 1900s. It shows the Breakwater, completed in 1890, the Viaduct, and the Merri River footbridge. There are many people on the sandy river banks, beach and bridge, and some are on the rocks of Middle Island. The printed postcard was made in England and is one of the Jordan Series produced by Joseph Jordan, a renowned photographer in Victoria's Western District.The postcard is locally significant as a record of the early footbridge over the Merri River, and the Viaduct before the space between the pylons was filled it. It shows the use of horses as a means of transportation. The photograph is also associated with Joseph Jordan, a renowned Victoria's Western District photographer.Postcard, coloured, showing the Port of Warrnambool. People are gathered on the sandy beach beside the river and near the river mouth. They are on and below the footbridge, along with several horses. Some are on the rocky Middle Island.
