Contains three items about this: 1/A photocopied article (across 3 long columns) from the Southern Cross newspaper dated 21/07/1928. The article contains details of the opening of the Gardenvale Martin Street subway ceremony. Mention is made of the Caulfield Council’s spontaneous assistance, harmony working alongside Brighton and their financial assistance, as well. Councillor E.F. sheet music, Ten Pretty Girls, 1940's
Ten Pretty Girls was composed by Jimmy Kennedy and Will Grosz wrote the lyrics. The song was written in the 1930's. Broadcasting from Sydney from 1936, Jim Davidson’s ABC Dance Band, with the trumpeter Jim Gussey, the vocalist Alice Smith and the trombonist and arranger George Trevare, became the most popular in the country. It presented dance programs on Friday and Saturday evenings and played for other ABC shows including `Out of the Bag’ and `A.B.C. Parade’. In 1937-39 the band made three interstate tours, with a variety of artists including Bob Dyer, Tex Morton and Gladys Moncrieff. Davidson was a strict but encouraging leader who inspired great loyalty in his players. (ref adb.anu.edu.au/biography)This is an example of the kind of music popular in the first half of the 20th century.Sheet music for "Ten Pretty Girls". Photograph - Widows function, Widows Christmas Concert at Melbourne Town Hall 1995, 1995
A regular event for the widows was a Christmas concert at the Melbourne Town Hall. The performers were the RAAF Central Band. Held in December each year. The photos from 1995 show President Millie presenting flowers to Inez Bruce, Gwen Gunn and Irene Noll. Usually the concert was the time the Widows Clubs presented Legacy with funds raised through their fundraising each year - in this case $21,000 - and the president acknowledges with flowers. The article mentions that over 1,800 widows came together for the concert despite the rain and bad weather. The RAAF Central Band was conducted by Sq. Ldr. Graham Lloyd, and Ivor Lloyd (ex POW from Changi) and singer Lisa Hugo also performed.A record of regular events for widows to attend and enjoy together.Colour photo x 8 of a Christmas concert at the Melbourne Town Hall in 1995 and an article in the Answer.widows, concert, christmas, answer, raaf central band -

Photograph, Pilgrimage to the Shrine 1993, 1993
Photos show the Legatees and widows marching along St Kilda Road past the Melbourne Concert Hall behind a bagpipe band - it was Widows' Sunday when there is a service at the Shrine for the Legacy Widows. An article in The Answer newsletter in September 1993 mentions that the Legatees and widows set off from St Pauls Cathedral in a 'Pilgrimage to the the Shrine' behind the Hawthorn City Pipe Band. There may be more photos and a proof sheet still to come. It is assumed to be 1993 Widows Sunday as Legatee John Stevenson is in the front row, he was president in 1993 which was Legacy's 70th Anniversary. (NB It is not Anzac Day 1993 as that is shown at 00021 when the Legatees marched behind a 70th Anniversary banner).A record of a march to the Shrine by Legatees and Widows for Widows Sunday.Black and white photo x 2 of a march past the Melbourne Concert Hall.Marked B7 and B8 in blue pen, which are the frame numbers from a B proof sheet but its whereabouts isn't known.widows, 70th anniversary, widows' sunday, pilgrimage -

Badges, Manchester Unity, Mid 20th century
The MU on these badges stands for Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows. This was one of the most prominent of the benefit societies operating in Warrnambool over the years. Originating in England, Manchester Unity I.O.O.F. was established in Warrnambool in 1860. This benefit society built and opened the Oddfellows Hall in Koroit Street Warrnambool in 1869 (building still extant but now used for office space). Some years ago the Manchester Unity I. O.O.F. joined with the Australian Natives Association to form a new benefit group, Australia Unity. These badges are of interest as mementoes of a benefit society that was prominent in Warrnambool for over 100 years..1 A round metal lapel badge with gilt edging, an outer blue band and the letters ‘MU’ in blue and red on a gold-coloured background. Clothing - Linen Waist Band and Lace Drops, 1900s
The Fashion & Design collection of Kew Historical Society includes examples of textiles dating from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Some of the textiles, were used as items of clothing, others as items of household decoration, or simply as travel souvenirs. These textiles were created both domestically and internationally. Predictably with the growth of an ethnically and culturally more diverse community in Kew after the Second World War, textiles, clothing and objects in the collection inevitably reflected this diversity. Curved white cotton band with pin tucked rectangular inset front and back. It curves downward to enable the two bobbin lace panels to hang downwards. Has four crotched buttons. The stiches used are plait stitch, cloth stitch, and mesh stitch.lace, women's clothing -

Uniform, Kew Bowling Club, Kew Bowling Club Original Club Colours of Tie and Hatband, 1920s
Sports Clubs in Kew in the final decades of the 19th century and in the early 20th century were often umbrella organisations with facilities for a number of sports. Typically in Kew, this included teams in lawn bowls, tennis and croquet. The Kew Bowling Club was formed in 1880 while the privately owned Auburn Heights Recreation Club was opened in 1904. By 1998, the two Clubs decided to amalgamate at the Auburn Heights site in Barkers Road, forming the Kew Heights Sports Club. The combined club was itself taken over by the Melbourne Cricket Club in 2012 becoming MCC Kew Sports Club. In 2017 MCC Kew closed and its landholding was subsequently sold to Carey Baptist Grammar School. Both the Kew and Auburn Heights Clubs assembled important collections. These historically significant and large collections were donated to the Society in 2020. The collections include manuscripts, pictures, trophies, plans, honour boards etc. References Barnard FGA 1910, 'Sports and Pastimes' in Jubilee History of Kew Victoria: Its origin & progress 1803-1910. Reeve S 2012, City of Boroondara: Thematic Environmental History, p.216.The combined collections of the four sporting clubs making up the collection number hundreds of items that are historically significant locally. They are also significant to the sporting history of the greater Melbourne area and to the sports of lawn bowls and tennis in Australia in the 19th and 20th centuries. The collection illuminates two of the Victorian historic themes - 'Building community life' through forming community organisations and 'Shaping cultural and creative life' by participating in sport and recreation.Framed and glazed part uniform of the Kew Bowling Club with the original club colours of tie and hat band, worn by A.D.
