Portrait of Mollie Riches (1896-1979), co-founder of the Rheumatism and Arthritis Association of Victoria (RAAV). This photo appears on page 1 (cover page) of the Vol 14, September 1979 issue of RAAV's quarterly newsletter, News Review, to commemorate the death of Mary "Mollie" Riches' on the 29th of August of that year. It accompanies a brief obituary by Dr Leslie Koadlow (1920-2006), co-founder of the RAAV. A more detailed obituary was published in the following issue of the newsletter. Peter White Bray(28/2/1871-24/12/1958) was the son of John Bray and Catherine Hamilton Innes. John and Catherine had a total of 12 children. Another child was Edith May Bray (1883-27/5/1957) who married Harry Gee in 1904. Their son Harry Herbert was born in 1906 so this photo would date c. 1907-8 when Harry Herbert was pictured with his Uncle Peter at the age of about 18 months. Peter never married and is buried with his sister Amy at Eaglehawk. The Spalding factory was located at the intersection of Ballarat Rd and McIntyre Rd in Sunshine (North East corner). The factory made sporting goods, and in 1972 Spalding acquired T. W. Sherrin Pty Ltd which was a major manufacturer of footballs used in Australian Rules football games. In the early 1990's the factory in Sunshine was demolished and replaced by the first Bunnings Hardware store to be erected in Victoria. In July 2003 Spalding was bought out by the Russell Corporation.The board is a historical record of the loyal employees who provided at least 25 years of service to Spalding or to T. W. Sherrin Pty Ltd.Brown stained wooden board with wave shaped top which is about 14 cm less wide than the base. The names of employees who have provided 25 years of loyal service are recorded on the board in gold coloured lettering. The board contains the names of 50 workers who had reached the 25 year service milestone at SPALDING, and also the names of 4 employees who did the same at T. W. SHERRIN Pty Ltd. The photo shows President W.A. Perrin accepting a donation from the Mr W.P. Mein of Williamstown Racing Club at a Legatee function. The Comradeship Bell is on the table so it is assumed it is a Legacy luncheon, usually held weekly. President 'Bill' Perrin is wearing dark glasses, as he was blind as a result of service in the First World War. He went on to be elected President of the Co-Ordinating Council at the Perth Conference in 1948 to succeed L/- Savige in the role. An article in Trove provides the date of 19 June 1943 for the luncheon. The Williamstown Racing Club donated the net proceeds of a race meeting on 12 May at Moonee Valley to Legacy, which was £9,178/8/6. The photo caption identifies the men as: 'CHEQUE FOR £9,178 being presented by Mr W. P. Mein, chairman of Williamstown Racing Club, to Mr W. A. Perrin, president of the Legacy Club at the club's luncheon yesterday. The funds were raised by a race meeting. Seated (from left) : Major H. Steele, Messrs E. Sherwen (vicepresident Legacy), A. N. By 1960/61 all the factors operating against a narrow gauge railway were in place for the Colac-Beech Forest line. As well as using a 2-6-2 Tank engine over 60 years old, 14A, the train by this stage only had a louvre van, two NQ trucks and a guard's van to bring to Colac.
