R class locomotives were used between 1951 and 1974. R703 began operation in 1951 so R704 would have been an early loco. They were built by the Nth British Locomotive Co., Glasgow. Steam trams operated in Bendigo 1892-1902. They replaced Battery operated trams that could not cope with the hilly terrain of Bendigo.
