The pilgrimage was lead by a bag piper, Ian McKenzie and Standard bearer from Legacy Leadership Group (an older junior Legatee). The competition looked specifically at 'doorways and openings'. Postcards were a common form of souvenirs for soldiers who were travelling either during World War 1, or just after, or while returning to Australia. These postcard scenes include the Cathedral and a bridge in Florence, and church and the Pantheon in Rome, a view of Lausanne and a fountain in Versailles and an interior from Brussels. These were with other World War 1 memorabilia that has come from Private John Basil McLean, 2nd Reinforcements, 37th Battalion, A.I.F. There was a large collection of postcards so he may have been collecting them as souvenirs. J.B. McLean (Service No. 13824) was from near Maffra, Victoria and enlisted on 22 January 1916. He embarked on 16 December 1916 for Europe. His full war record is available from AWM. He spent time with the Australian Field Artillery (Pack Section). At the end of the war he worked for a year at the A.I.F. Headquarters in London before returning to Australia on the 'Ceramic', arriving Portsea in 1920.Postcards were a very common form of communication in the first World War. Postcards as souvenirs or as correspondence would have been familiar to the first Legatees as they had served in World War 1. Born in Ireland 1864, Daniel Mannix entered into the Catholic Church and in 1917, he became the Archbishop of Melbourne. Dedicated to the community and its issues, he was known to have spoken against conscription. An electric lamp in the shape of the Legacy Torch with an orange glass flame. It was dedicated in a church service at St Paul's Cathedral in October 1973 as part of the 50th Anniversary of Legacy celebrations. At the Jubilee dinner afterwards several copies were given out to Legacy branches as in photo number 00452 (copy attached).A record that the torch emblem is highly revered and celebrated by the commissioning of a unique piece for Legacy Clubs in the 1970s.Gold coloured torch symbol made into an electric lamp on a wooden base with an orange glass flame. The 67th Battalion was raised in mid 1912 as a local militia training battalion in Bendigo. During World War One, many of its members enlisted in the newly formed 38th Battalion which was raised in Bendigo in 1916. At one point it was a garrison battalion stationed at Queenscliff. It was disbanded in 1918 and became the area 38th Battalion. The colours were laid up in St Paul's Cathedral in Bendigo on October 25th 1929. In 2006, with the cathedral needing to carry out repairs and alterations, the colours were offered to Bendigo's Soldiers Memorial Institute Military Museum. On 17th April, 2007 under direction from RSM Ceremonial, the colours were re-laid up in the museum in a ceremony conducted by the Reverend Peta Sherlock and witnessed by church and RSL members after 12 months of planning and putting together..1) Middle banner in the photograph. This religious book by John Scott, D.D., late Rector of St. Giles in the Fields, London, sets about to explain some of the church's doctrine. The book originated from the Warrnambool Mechanics' Institute. The book was printed for Walter Kettilby, a bookseller and publisher in London in the 17th century. He died in 1699 and was buried at St. Paul’s Cathedral.The book is significant for its age – it is one of the oldest books in Flagstaff Hill’s collection, published in 1696, well before Australia was colonised. The publisher, Walter Kettilby, passed away three years later. The book expresses the writer’s interpretation of Christian doctrine giving an insight into the doctrines and beliefs of the 17th century. The book was originally part of the Warrnambool Mechanics' Institutes’ Collection. which has historical and social significance for its strong association with the Mechanics Institute movement and its important role in people's intellectual, cultural and social development throughout the latter part of the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century. The collection of books is a rare example of an early lending library and its significance is enhanced by the survival of an original collection of many volumes.
