Ordsall (c.1864-1970) - Situated on the southwest corner of Cotham Road and Charles Street, the single-storey Italianate mansion, Ordsall, was built for John Halfey in the 1860s. Following extensions in 1878 and 1881to designs by Michael Hennessy, Halfey commissioned the decorating firm of Cullis Hill & Co to create elaborate coloured frescoes on the ceilings of the drawingroom and ballroom in 1882. These frescoes were among the finest created in Melbourne during this period. Sold in 1905 to David Carnegie, and renamed South Esk, it was sold to the City of Kew in 1947 and demolished in 1970.This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers, that was donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son John Rogers in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s. Together it forms the largest privately-donated collection within the archives of the Kew Historical Society.The front garden and facade of South Esk in Cotham Road, Kew, during the period when it was owned by the City of Kew. Cricketer W.G. Grace said the City Oval was the 'most English' of any grounds he had played on in Australia. The City Ova Grandstand was constructed in 1898 to the designs of Clegg, Kell and Miller. The arched roof is supported by iron columns with cast iron brackets. Three squat lanterns are a feature of the roof, and support flagpoles. The cast iron balustrading at the front of the grandstand features a sunflower pattern, and the upper tiered section covers dressing rooms and internal stairways. Registered by Heritage Victoria, it is significant as a large and intact grandstand. The design, especially the roof, is unique in Victoria and the setting is enhanced by the ancillary ticket boxes and nearby mature trees. It was classifed by the National Trust on 11 June 1981. In 1994, the City of Moorabbin was integrated into the Cities of Bayside, Glen Eira, Kingston and Monash. CMHS members are informed of the Local Government Mayors , CMHS Committee of Management Members, CMHS Operations & Projects and General Members Meeting Dates. Articles about the K.G Putt Memorial Centre Bentleigh Elderly Citizens Club 60th Anniversary Celebration and the induction of locally born Aviator Harry Hawker 1889-1921 into the Australian Aviation Hall of Fame at Wagga Wagga, on 8 Nov 2014. Following our success in obtaining the PROV Grant in May 2014 Lindie Ward, Museums Mannequins Ltd, brought the new mannequin for the Mary Box Wedding Dress to Box Cottage in August and showed members how to present the dress. In September the new Museum Display Cabinet from TASHCO Pty Ltd, Corio was delivered.The unveiling of the Dress in the Cabinet was celebrated on September 10th by CMHS members with special guests Elizabeth Miller MP Bentleigh and Elizabeth Triarico , History and Heritage Co-ordinator GECC. The requirement to register dogs in Victoria commenced in the mid1860s and for most of this time has been a Local Council responsibility. Dog owners who do not register their dogs are fined. The origin of these particular dog registration tags is not known. These tags are of interest in that they are examples of the type of dog tag issued locally in the 1970s.These are five dog registration tags, circular in shape with a hole through the top for attachment to a collar. Each tag has a separate number. All the tags are made of a form of plastic. The 1977-8 tag for the City of Warrnambool is gold in colour and the Shire of Warrnambool 1977-8 tag is brown-coloured. The three Shire of Warrnambool 1978-9 tags are white and have silver-coloured printing on them.
