Coin collections have a long and varied history. Coins were often collected in churches in a box located near the entrance/exit, and later via a collection plate that was passed amongst the congregation Funds were used to repair the church or feed the poorest of the parish. The donation of coins is and was considered part of religious life and mentioned in Christian, Jewish and Islamic texts. With the need and expansion of charitable works occurring outside religious life, charity boxes began to spread into hospitals, orphanages and asylums. The need for non-fixed boxes grew with the rise in charities and their activities outside a fixed building. Collection boxes could be large (and therefore hard to move) or could be held by individuals acting as collection agents, working at a specific location, moving between dwellings or at events. A photo of President Handbury on the steps of Stanhope House to celebrate the 50th Anniversary in 1973. He is speaking to a gathering and is standing with a group of Junior Legatees, presumably those that live in the residences (Stanhope, Holmbush and Blamey House). Photo came from a folder marked Residences. For other items commemorating the 50th Anniversary see 00451 to 00455, 00460 to 00464, 00391, 01418, 01419, 01420. Blamey House (purchased 1947) , Stanhope (purchased 1945) and Harelands (purchased 1950) were residences run by Melbourne Legacy to take care of children whose fathers were servicemen, and who may have been left orphans, or whose mother may have been unable to care for them herself. Harelands accomodated boys and girls under the age of 14, Blamey House looked after boys over 14, and Stanhope looked after girls over 14. Photo of Senator Barney Cooney presenting a cheque to Legacy in front of a gathering of Legacy disabled dependents. Also some of the mothers gathered to watch. Senator Cooney represented the Department of Veterans Affairs when he presented two wheelchairs and a cheque for $7,000 to President George Woodward at Legacy House. The article in the Answer newsletter mentions: 'The grant of $7,000 will greatly assist Legacy's programs by covering the cost of bus hire needed for the regular outings organised during the year and the wheelchairs will provide additional assistance allowing more Junior Legatees to participate in activities.' After the presentation the junior Legatees went to the cinema and 10 pin bowling. Every month Legacy's handicapped dependents were invited to go on outing for take part in recreational and educational activities. These programmes aimed to develop independence and thus lessen the need for reliance on others for simple routine functions. Once a year there is a two week camp this also gave the mothers some respite. A black and white photo of a group of people holding camping items in the garden of a house. From other photos it appears to be a house often used for gatherings and may be on Stan Savige's Balnarring property. In the early years, Legacy organised outings to the property of Legacy founder, Legatee Stan Savige, who had a place in Balnarring close to the beach. Permanent camp buildings were built in 1930. In 1930 Lord Somers (Governor of Victoria) also started a camp at a nearby property and the area was renamed Somers. Legacy Somers Camps continued intermittently at Stan's property until it was decided in 1951 to make other arrangements for holidays. This photo was with a group of photos from around the 1930s from the early days of Legacy, including cricket team, football team, and camps at Balnarring/Somers (saved as 01915 to 01934). Mention has been found that the Savige holiday house at Balnarring was next to the campsite and sometimes provided support to the campers.A photo of a group of founding legatees or some of the first junior legatees. A woman, an elderly woman and two children pose on the verandah of a Federation style home. On the back of the postcard is written: "21-12-15 To wish you and all. A Happy Christmas, and all good wishes for the new year from Mrs Green and M. Mills". This family is possibly related to the Rev Wm Green who was associated with St Margaret's Church Eltham at around this time. An interesting programme of music, varied by a very amusing dialogue by Glee Club members; made an enjoyable evening. Green, Mrs. Green, and Miss Mills, who were leaving on the 3rd inst. for a visit to the old country. Mr. Green responded, reciprocating the good wishes expressed. The Beechworth Burke MuseumAnimal specimen - Diamond Dove, Trustees of the Australian Museum, 1860-1880
Diamond Doves reside in Oceania and Northern America. They are often seen gathering in small groups and foraging on the ground near a source of water. Diamond Doves are granivores. Their diet includes seeds of herbs and grasses. The sound made by the dove is a slow "coo" often repeated twice. These birds are renowned for their ability to find their way home over large distances which has resulted in the use of these birds as messengers throughout history. This specimen is part of a collection of almost 200 animal specimens that were originally acquired as skins from various institutions across Australia, including the Australian Museum and the National Museum of Victoria, as well as individuals such amateur anthropologist Reynell Eveleigh Johns between 1860-1880. These skins were then mounted by members of the Burke Museum Committee and put-on display in the formal space of the Museum’s original exhibition hall where they continue to be on display. This display of taxidermy mounts initially served to instruct visitors to the Burke Museum of the natural world around them, today it serves as an insight into the collecting habits of the 19th century. This specimen is part of a significant and rare taxidermy mount collection in the Burke Museum. This collection is scientifically and culturally important for reminding us of how science continues to shape our understanding of the modern world. They demonstrate a capacity to hold evidence of how Australia’s fauna history existed in the past and are potentially important for future environmental research. This collection continues to be on display in the Museum and has become a key part to interpreting the collecting habits of the 19th century.The Diamond Dove is a small pigeon with red rings around their eyes. It stands on a wooden perch with an identification tag tied around one leg. The upper part of the body is a brown grey and the belly of the dove is a cream colour. This bird has distinctive white spots on the wings. This particular specimen is a grey coloured Diamond Dove. Other colourings for this species are white, brown, yellow, red, cinnamon and pied.2b Little Turtle Dove. In the absence of the Minister' of Public Works-who was unavoidably prevented from attending-the opening ceremony was neatly performed by President Lugton, of the Heidelberg Shire, in a few wellchosen words, after which an adjournment was made to the Literary Institute, where some sixty gentlemen were entertained at luncheon, followed by speeches, songs, and recitations. It was a red letter day for the Creek, and everything passed off with becoming eclat." Marg Card unsuccessfully contested the 1998 federal election for the seat of Ballarat. She served as a councillor and mayor at the Moorabool Shire. Dianne Hadden was an independent member of the Victorian Legislative Council. She exited the Australian Labor Party in 2005. She stood for the seat of Ballarat East at the Victorian Legislative Assembly in 2006, but was unsuccessful. Karen Overington was a former welfare worker and served as a councillor and mayor (Sebastopol Borough) before she was elected to federal parliament in 1999. Karen did not contest the 2010 election. She died from cancer in 2011. Terry Bracks is the wife of former Victorian Premier, Steve Bracks. She is actively involved in arts and theatre organisations in Victoria and is a board member of Breast Cancer Network Australia, the National Film and Sound Archive, and the Australian Children’s Television Foundation. Jenny Beacham is a former Labor state secretary and was an ALP candidate for Ballarat in 1996. These photos are of a gathering at the Shrine of Legatees and a delivery of lone pine saplings on the back of a ute. Legatee George Woodward was present, also a school girl and a veteran. These photos were in an album of photos from 1993. These are the saplings grown from the seeds collected by President Chas Wilks in 1989 (item 01426). From an article in The Answer in June 1994 the event was the official handing over of the seedlings that were propagated. Present were Minister for Natural Resources, The Hon Geoffrey Coleman and Gallipoli veteran Tom Brain. Legacy has run a programme since the 1970s of propagating saplings taken from seeds of pine descended from a pine tree from Gallipoli and giving them to various clubs, schools and town councils. Legacy is helping to keep the memory of the Gallipoli "Lone Pine" alive - its spirit living on today. Presentations are made to schools, ex-service organisations and interested bodies by Legacy Clubs in the hope that they will be cherished as a symbol of nationhood and of its just pride, devotion, courage, selflessness and sense of service to others.A record of Legacy being involved with distributing saplings in 1993. In 1993 Geoffrey Swan was the president and was about to hand over to George Woodward. His report shows pictures from many of the activities the widows are involved in such as concerts and gatherings at Legacy House. The report also recaps events through the year such as outings and camps for the junior legatees, handicapped dependents, legacy week and the school students Anzac commemoration service. Up to the 1980s the annual report would usually contain pages containing the Presidents report and photos of significant events of the year. Between 1987 and 1990 these were published in a separate document called 'Highlights from the Annual Report'. This could be used in promoting Legacy in different ways, without all the financial information normally held in an annual report. In following years it became called 'Report from the President' then 'Highlights from the President', before becoming 'Melbourne Legacy Highlights' which was published twice a year from 2007. It was eventually renamed, 'The Torch, Melbourne Legacy Highlights' in 2012. 'The Torch' is still published twice a year. Other annual reports in 00027, 01095, 01096 and 01097, 01098, 01310 and 01311. Melbourne LegacyDocument, President's Fund Donations, 1935
The Presidents Fund was created in 1932 by a donation from Legatee Walter W Berry from his late father's estate "to help temporarily embarrassed Melbourne Legatees" towards the end of The Great Depression. The aim of the fund was the give the President a way to help needy cases with discretion and without having to gain approval from committees. In many cases the money was repaid by the recipient. The letters record donations from various people, including the Howard and Georgina Berry Benevolent Fund which made donations for many years. Other donations include Mr J D Lobb, Legatee Bill Fry, and Legatee Ron Austin. Ron Austin usually forwarded money from the 'Over 70s' gathering of legatees over the age of 70 who met socially. This document was in a folder labelled President's Fund Origin and Authorisation with many other documents that included correspondence, receipts of donations and material about when money was given to help appropriate cases. The Old Colonists' Association Ballarat Inc. is a not for profit charitable organisation providing accommodation for elderly people. It manages a 27 Home retirement village at Charles Anderson Grove Ballarat. Accommodation is offered at significantly below market rates. It has been providing low cost accommodation to the elderly since the 1920s. The Association Council overseas the running of this facility on a voluntary basis. "GIFT COTTAGES.- Ballarat Old Colonists Benefit BALLARAT.— High tribute to the good citizenship of Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Williams, now of Melbourne, and Mr. S. Clark, of Ballarat. was paid by a representative gathering at Gillies-street on Thursday afternoon, when the two cottages respectively presented by them for the use of old and indigent colonists were handed over to the council of the Ballarat Old Colonists' Association. The cottages are handsome brick structures, modern in design and equipment, and cost about £650 each. Mr. A. H. Nevett, president of the Ballarat organisation, expressed the gratification of the association at the commencement of a scheme of cottages for old colonists, which had been the aim of the association for many years. Mr. Williams said that when in Ballarat he had been in many public movements as President of South-street and president of the amalgamtion (sic) movement, but in giving this cottage for the use of the old people he had established a tangible and definite link between himself and Ballarat. Similar sentiments were expressed by Mr. Clark, who said his benefaction had given him a great and genuine pleasure. Both donors were warmly thanked on be half of citizens generally by the mayor (Cr. A. E. Nicholson). At subsequent social gathering appropriate toasts were honored, and assurances were given that the association's scheme for 50 gift cottages on the lines of Melbourne would be furthered by several in the not far distant future. He was a son of the late Mr. Robert Clark, one of the founders of the journal. Mr. Clark was president of the Ballarat Bowling Club for 10 years, and was a member of the Australian bowling team that visited Britain some years ago. He was a benefactor to Ballarat charities, and gave a cottage to the Ballarat Old Colonists' Association Cottage Scheme. Amalie Feild studied at the Ballarat Technical Art School, and was appointed Instructor in Stained Glass and Pottery. Amalie Feild was the first recipient of a scholarship to study stained glass and pottery design at the Sydney Technical School After marrying Archibald Colquhoun She became better known as Amalie Colquhoun. Upon returning to Ballarat she established a pottery school, and designed stained glass windows for churches in Ballarat. The Uniting Church in Lydiard Street Ballarat has four panels and the Ballarat High School has World War 1 memorial windows by Amalie. More than 100 old students, teachers and others associated with the Ballarat Technical Art School assembled at a gathering at the Alexandria on Saturday night in honor of Mr. H. H. Smith, who has retired from the school after 35 years as principal. Mr. D. Johnston, acting principal, and a former student, handed over a portrait in oils of Mr. Smith painted by Mrs. Amalie Colquhoun, of Melbourne, another former student, who was also among the visitors. Luther Hayley’s Bakery and General Store on left promoting refreshments and summer drinks. With the opening of the railway to Eltham in 1902, Melbourne residents would regularly enjoy a Sunday excursion journey on the train to Eltham for a day’s outing to the countryside. Possibly the annual State schools picnic held by the Board of Advice at Haley's Paddock near Eltham railway station on 11 March, 1904. Haley’s Paddock (now occupied by Eltham shopping centre) was capable of accommodating 10,000 people, with ample shade and hilly surroundings, an ideal place for any gathering. Hugh Gray was the son of Charles Gray and Robina Tait. Hugh was born on 7 January 1810 at Alloa Clackmananshire, Scotland, and married Elizabeth Paterson on 8 July 1831 at Glascow, Scotland. Hugh, Elizabeth and their eight children boarded the 'Borneuf' and set sail for Australia from Glasgow on 20 May 1852. In October 1853 Hugh Gray set up a blacksmiths forge on Main Road Ballarat. He was a member of the Ballarat Reform League. In July 1857 he donated 5 pounds to the Humffray Testimonial on behalf of the Blacksmith Association. In 1858 and 1877 he was the President of the Caledonian Society, and a committee member at other times. Gray was also one of the first promoters of the Mechanics' Institute. On 14 March 1869 Hugh Gray started the Philosophical Association of Ballarat. Hugh Gray died on 02 June 1880. The sisters were born in New Zealand. They travelled not only around Australia and New Zealand but around Europe, the British Isles and Canada in a caravan performing songs, dances and tales they collected. Often there was little scenery. They established a Theatre of Youth (T.O.Y.) near Circular Quay in Sydney and later founded the Australian Children's Theatre. Mavis Thorpe Clark (1909-1999) began her writing career as a schoolgirl. She was educated at Methodist Ladies College in Hawthorn. Her first story for children was published as a serial in The Australasian newspaper when she was 14 years old. Her first book was written when she was 18 and published in 1930. She was a prolific writer. She wrote mainly for children and teenagers, but also authored several biographies, a number of non-fiction titles, and many articles, short stories and scripts for newspaper, magazine and radio. During the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s she travelled extensively in South Australia and Western Australia gathering material for her stories. In 1967 she won the Children's Book Council of the Year award for The Min-Min which was set in outback South Australia.164p illus. Clothing.Woman's cream coloured long sleeved silk bodice. High round neckline with 4 cm stand up collar. Semi-circular yoke front and back (13cm radius). Collar and yoke have embroidered net over silk fabric. Kimono cut long sleeves have cuffs of embroidered net over silk from shoulder to wrist along top of sleeve (33cm X 4 cm). Sleeves and front of bodice have all over vertical pin tucks. The front of the bodice has cotton tape ties stitched across from centre front to side seams at waist level gathering the fabric to form a peplum effect at the front. The tails of the cotton tapes tie across the back from the side seams. Full length front opening fastened with nine press-studs between collar and waist and a metal hook and eye at the waist. Very fine black and cream check silk lined in the bodice and sleeves with fine grey silk. Long sleeves are finished with a 4cm deep cuff, trimmed with a double row of cording, and a 1.5cm wide pleated frill. Two black shiny buttons trim the cuff(possibly plastic), which fastens with three press-studs. Waist is defined with one band of corded fabric. Two bands of cording outline the V neckline, which is also finished with a pleat frill. Cording, and three rows of hand - gathering outline a shaped frill at the hemline-alternately 31cm and 46cm deep. Seven black buttons fasten the front of the bodice. A placket extends into the skirt, fastened by four press-studs. Skirt has four knife pleats each side of the centre placket. Four knife pleats at each hemline, and six at centre back. The Fred Rochow Railways Collection incorporates photos related to the operation of the Wodonga Railway Station including different types of trains and railways staff C. 1930 – 1990. It was donated to the Wodonga Historical Society by Fred Rochow, a railwayman who spent many years based in Wodonga. He joined the Victorian Railways on 17th June l947 and retired in 1988. For some time, he was a member of the Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Enginemen and served a term as a member of the Trades Hall Council. He had an extensive knowledge of the struggles that took place to achieve better conditions for railway workers. Fred worked for many years as a fireman and then worked his way up the ranks to driver, experiencing many changes from the days of steam locomotives through to diesel trains, locomotives and even the modern XPT train. He worked throughout Victoria at different stages of his career, with his final working years focused on the northeast of Victoria and the Albury to Melbourne line. After his retirement, Fred continued to share his love of steam miniature trains with the community.This collection has local and statewide significance as it captures images of trains, locomotives and personnel who operated the railway services in Wodonga and throughout Northeast Victoria. This reproduction photograph was donated in 1986 during research for the first history of the school, 'The Westbourne and Williamstown Grammar Schools: A History of the First 120 Years (1867-1986)' by historian Joseph Johnson. It pictures female students in 1954. The students are pictured at Holy Trinity Hall which was situated behind the Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Nelson Place, Williamstown. The hall was located on the corner of Aitken and Pasco Streets, Williamstown, and was home to the school for 41 years from 3 February 1915. In 2008, Holy Trinity Williamstown approached the school to take possession of and relocate the heritage listed building, so that the church could redevelop its property.The relocation of Holy Trinity Hall was an enormous task and very large commitment by Westbourne Grammar to its heritage. Considerations included cost, relocation logistics, architectural conservation, modern building codes and educational facility standards. In 2010, after more than two years of process between the Anglican Church and Westbourne Grammar, including approval from Heritage Victoria and assistance from the Labour government's Building the Education Revolution program, the Holy Trinity Hall was moved to the Truganina campus and once again became a site of gathering and learning for Westbourne Grammar students.
