A pre-Militia (now CMF) Field Ambulance group, at a Seymour Training Camp, Victoria circa 1910-1913. These men, as CMF, did not serve outside Australia unless they transferred to the regular AIF. The two soldiers in the back row, far right, are wearing the First Commonwealth pattern uniforms 1903-1912 and would be Regular Army instructors. The bullock team was part of a parade held on the main street of Halls Gap in conjunction with the 150th anniversary of Major Mitchell's visit to the area. There was also a plaque unveiled in commemoration of the Wildflower Show and its many volunteers.The photo is taken from the rear of a bullock team pulling a dray down a road. Three children can be seen sitting in the dray and its back is out of shot. Two men are walking to the left of the team, the closest to the camera holding a long whip over his shoulder. Frank Wright was a renown resident of Smeaton, where he was born. He lived at Laura Villa, and attended Smeaton State School. His father William was a gold miner and his mother's name was Sarah. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and was awarded a gold medal for the highest marks in the ALCM examinations in the British Colonies at the age of seventeen years. He became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was later appointed Musical Director of the London County Council (the GLC or Greater London Council), where he organized many amazing concerts in most of the 150 parks, in and around the London district. He was also responsible for some of London’s major concerts at Kenwood, the Crystal Palace and Holland Park. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and conducted at the Guildhall of Music and Drama. Frank was often invited to adjudicate Brass Band Championships around Europe, in Australia, including South Street and in New Zealand. The Frank Wright Medal at the Royal South Street competition is awarded to an individual recognized as making an outstanding contribution to brass music in Australia.1). The Surrey Dive was formed on the site of a quarry from which clay had been extracted for brick-making. From 1905 Council was petitioned by the newly-formed Surrey Park Swimming Club to develop the site. Improvements including bathing sheds, spring boards and a 10-lane course but it remained a challenging site for inexperienced swimmers because of the sheer cliffs and the drop of 30m. The dive was the site of many swimming carnivals and attracted large spectator crowds. Frank Beaurepaire competed in the first carnival held in 1907 and won the one-mile race in record time. The dive was closed following the drought of 1967-1968 and redeveloped as an ornamental lake.The Surrey Dive was the first Olympic standard pool in Australia. Simple funnel type drenching was used by dunking base into saucepan containing drench. Funnel was then held upright and current dosage was retained in the funnel. With the drenchers finger covering the filling opening the pointed end of the funnel was then placed sufficiently far into the sheeps mouth to release dose into throat.Drench funnel.

The intersection of Warrigal Road and Nepean Highway is now a major intersection, serviced by traffic lights. In the 1950s it was a joining of two sealed roads, although covered in gravel, and with wide gravel shoulders. There are no traffic signs and the few houses visible are not set very far back from the road. This image is one of many in the collections that focuses on either roads or the railway. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the discovery of gold in Bendigo the Jubilee Exhibition ran from November 1901 to May 1902. It was opened on the 13th November 1901 by the Governor General Lord Hopetoun. Also in attendance was the Prime Minister Edmund Barton. The exhibition was promoted as far away as London.Souvenir jubilee exhibition handkerchief. Cream fine linen with ''Jubilee Exhibition'' embroidered with blue cotton and ''Bendigo 1851 - 1901'' embroidered in red cotton below a scene embroidered with yellow, green, fawn and blue cotton. This petticoat is demonstrative of home made infant undergarment clothing in the early 1900. Distance to and from commercial haberdashery store was too far to fit out young girls especially if the are undergarments. Mothers and other family members had the seamstress talent to make clothes that are not in full view of anyoneHistorically these undergarments have no fashion relevance for the younger fashion scene and this garment is an example of the self sufficient supply of home made articles. This was especially so within the Kiewa Valley and surrounds. Fashion in Australia and more so in areas with little or no access to overseas or city merchandise lacked "modern fashionable" clothes e.g. the latest from England and Paris.
