This pocket knife is believed to have been used by an employee of the Bacchus family and possibly given to the employee by the Bacchus family. It is therefore an object with a probable linkage to one of the earliest European colonist families in the Bacchus Marsh area.A pocket knife with mother of pearl handle and a silver blade.On the handle on one side there is an engraved decorative design featuring a bird, leaves and flowers. Along the middle of the handle there is a blank cartouche of silver, intended for the name of the owner. On the other side there are two engraved starbursts. On the blade there are five hallmarks, a crown, a lion passant, head of Queen Victoria, letter G and the letters JM. The crown represents Sheffield. The lion passant indicates the knife was made in England, the image of Queen Victoria is a Duty Mark, the letter G indicates that the year of manufacture was 1850. Part of the legislation saw the use of government funds for local irrigation projects. These local projects were managed by local irrigation trusts. William Bacchus was one of the first European colonists to live in the area in which a township (Bacchus Marsh) was later named after him. He arrived on land occupied by the Wurundjeri and Wadawurrung peoples in 1838 and established a large sheep farm. Between 1846 and 1847 he contracted builders and other skilled workers to construct a large brick and stone two storey house. William Bacchus died in 1849. His son Henry Bacchus sold the house in 1851. For many years it was owned by the Crook family. When this pamphlet was published in 1957 the house was owned by the Lifeguard Milk Company of Bacchus Marsh. By this time the property had become derelict and was almost demolished. Around this time the Young Mens Christian Association Club in Bacchus Marsh became involved in efforts to help preserve this historic property. This pamphlet was part of those efforts. Mary Hary had a long and successful career which included her winning multiple Logie awards for her television role as the co-host of the variety program The Penthouse Club on Channel 7 in the 1970s. She died by suicide in 1985 at the age of 53. Prior to her death she had been working on a play about her life. After her death her brother Frank Hardy developed her project into a play which was first performed at the Playbox Theatre in Melbourne in 1992. Hardy was was an active member of the Communist Party of Australia for most of his life. He tried unsuccessfully on two occasions to be elected to the Federal Parliament as a representative of the Communist party. Hardy died in North Carlton, Melbourne in 1994 aged 76. This work is a collection of critical essays about Hardy's work and life by several different writers and critics. He later acquired land in the Pentland Hills near Bacchus Marsh and operated a school at Blackwood which he called the Landsberg Mains School. It was also known as the Landsberg Academy. The school opened in 1857 and operated under Lawson's direction until 1868. The school building was an imposing bluestone structure which came to be known as Landsberg House.The school was very successful for a time in the 1860s attracting students from across Victoria. Lawson died in 1869 and the school continued to operate until 1880 under a different Principal. Lawson is considered a pioneer educationalist in Australia. This is a substantial and scholarly biography about Lawson and his wife Isabella Wilson. A much anticipated event was the annual picnic where families gathered for the day at a picnic ground on the outskirts of Melbourne, such as Bacchus Marsh, Werribee and Mount Evelyn. The picnic today is still an important event in the club's social calendar.
