Letter dated 27 November 1959 addressed to James G. Gillespie at his place of work from D.J. Cartledge of Login Corporation Pty Ltd (North Sydney), enclosing extracts from Sydney newspapers following the publication of the Savige biography. Cartledge notes that there could have been reference to the book on television and in the Bulletin newspaper, but he has been unable to monitor them. Melbourne LegacyDocument - Minutes, Biography of the Late Lieutenant General Sir Stanley Savige, K.B.E., C.B., D.S.O., M.C., E.D, 1956
First committee meeting on 20 April 1956 to be held to get the project of writing a biography of Sir Stanley Savige under way. John Hetherington was selected as the author for a fee of one thousand pounds, but indicated that he would not be available to begin until the end of the year and expected the writing to take 12 months. The minutes note that Sir Stanley Savige's grandson, Stanley G. Waters, was born on the eve of the meeting. See also 00635 for a full list of committee members. It is interesting to note that the meeting took place at the Melbourne Town Hall, and was attended by the Lord Mayor (Sir Frank Selleck), who arrived late. This dictionary is a large tome containing a wealth of information current at the time of publication (1958). The Webster’s Dictionary is an American publication but it was known world-wide and would have been in many households in Australia in the mid 20th century. No information is available on A. M. Archibald (the signature in the front of the book)This book has no known local provenance but is retained as an example of an antiquarian item, a 60 year-old book.This is a large tome of 2129 pages, plus supplements of 160 pages. It has a faded dark green linen cover. The spine and the cover edges are damaged. The wording on the spine and cover are almost indecipherable. Inside the covers are images of a tree with branches representing Indo-European languages. The pages have alphabetical thumb tabs and these are double-sided with gold lettering. The pages contain black and white illustrations and coloured plates. The supplementary material includes coloured world maps, dictionaries of biography, geography and mythology and information on foreign words and phrases, abbreviations, Scripture and the history of Canada.A.M. John Kennedy was born on 04 April 1862, the son of ship carpenter Robert Kennedy and his wife Florinda (Aitken), and the brother of Malcolm and Colin Kennedy. In 1860 the family migrated to Melbourne where Kennedy senior set up as a shipwright. In 1879 Malcolm and John, who trained as a naval architect, joined their father as Robert Kennedy & Sons, shipbuilders and shipsmiths. On 27 December 1883 at North Melbourne, Malcolm married Ann White with Presbyterian forms. Next year Robert Kennedy & Sons removed to Hobart where with John W. Syme and W. J. Duffy, partners until 1889, they took over the Derwent Ironworks & Engineering Co., a foundry formerly owned by the (Alexander) Clark family. The Kennedys also acquired the patent slipyard, formerly Ross's, at Battery Point. After the shipbuilding industry in Hobart began to flag John also turned to mining: he attended the Ballarat School of Mines, and reopened the Hobart smelters which had been an adjunct of the Derwent Ironworks in the 1870s. He made several voyages overseas on smelting business and as mining promoter, and was a member of the London Stock Exchange. In 1913-14 he was manager of Tongkah Compound (1910); Robert Kennedy & Sons was reputed to have contributed to the success of the Hobart-run Tongkah Harbour, Thailand, tin mines by developing a suitable dredge. The brothers also held shares in the Irrawaddy Burma Co. John was a member of the Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers and from 1932 an honorary life member of the American Institute of Mining & Metallurgical Engineers. John died in Hobart on 10 January 1937. (Ann G. This book is a novel written by Wendy Scarfe. Born in 1933 Wendy Scarfe was educated at Melbourne University and Melbourne Secondary Teachers’ College. She has taught in Australia, England and India where she worked for the Gandhian Movement. Her final teaching post was at Warrnambool High School (now Warrnambool College). She has published many novels, biographies, volumes of poetry and other works dealing with social issues. Several of her published works were co-authored with her husband Allan (dec. 2016) This book is of considerable interest as the author is a Warrnambool resident and a noted Australian writer. In ‘The Lotus Thorne’ she has drawn on her extensive knowledge of India and its customs and social and economic issues. This copy is a discarded library book. This is a soft cover book of 226 pages. The cover has a white background with a pink overlay containing an image of an Indian design on the front cover. The printing on the cover is in black lettering. Sir Albert Ernest Coates (1895-1977), surgeon, was born on 28 January 1895 at Ballarat, Victoria, eldest of seven children of Arthur Coates, letter carrier, and his wife Clara Annie, née Eustice, both Victorian born. Although their worldly possessions were few, Arthur and Clara raised their family in an affectionate atmosphere and instilled in them the virtues of honesty, industry and education. The book is a biography and political history focussing upon the career of former National Party Premier of Queensland, Joh Bjelke-Petersen. Bjelke-Petersen was Premier of Queensland for almost twenty years and is renowned for using police to obstruct street demonstrations and his unsuccessful "Joh for PM" campaign (against PM Bob Hawke). He is believed to have been pivotal in the 1975 constitutional crisis that led to the sacking of Prime Minister, Gough Whitlam. What seems to be the final meeting of the committee formed to publish a biography of Sir Stanley Savige, including a statement of receipts and payments. 3000 copies of the book were accounted for, including 2237 actual sales. A balance of 489 pounds and twopence was authorised to be handed over to the Hon. Treasurer of the Sir Stanley Savige Fund. Framed print produced by the gravure process. The print is in sepia tonings and depicts a military scene, presumably Turkish. The print is mounted with a brown wooden frame and glass front. Artist is Erol Yildirim, born 1959 in Bolu, Turkey. The print is number 51 of 100 and is dated 2015. This print was presented to the President and members of the Frankston RSL Sub Branch by the people of Turkey in early 2015 (just prior to the 100th Anniversary of the Gallipoli landing). The rear of the print has a brief biography of the artist and an explanation of the process used to produce the print attached. Famous Swiss landcape painter Louis Buvelot came to Melbourne in 1864 and set up a portrait photography studio which he operated for one year only in 1865. This photograph is believed to be the oldest photo in the Shillinglaw Family Album collection. It is believed that the subject is a young Phillip Shillinglaw, without beard, at age 22 or 23. Phillip Shillinglaw was born Melbourne, August 7, 1842. He married Sarah Ann Kidd in Heidelberg, Victoria, February 28, 1872. In 1881 Phillip and Sarah and their small family moved to Eltham and made home in what was later to become known as Shillinglaw Cottage but which Phillip named 'Wattle Brae'. Shillinglaw Cottage is significant to Eltham’s local history. It is one of the earliest known buildings still in existence. Records suggest that the cottage was built circa 1859 by a man named Cochrane, believed to be Thomas Cochrane, in conjunction with George Stebbings though it is not known what Stebbings’s contribution was. It is believed Stebbings owned the cottage between 1874 and 1888. According to Margaret Ball’s (2017) book Shillinglaw Family of Eltham 1660-2007, Thomas Cochrane and family lived there from 1867 to 1874 however this is contrary to the records of assessable rates levied by the Eltham District Road Board, established in 1858, which shows Cochrane was the owner occupier (in Little Eltham) of approximately 25 acres of cultivated land and 25 acres of pastureland upon which a hut was sited in 1860. It is suspected that George Stebbings may have acquired the property from Cochrane in 1874 as it is noted that he had a tenant for a period, James Rossiter, who was the editor for the Evelyn Observer in Kangaroo Ground in 1874 (LATE SHIRE OFFICE AT KANGAROO GROUND (1934, February 16). In 1881 Phillip Shillinglaw became the ratepayer for the cottage though Stebbings retained ownership until 1888 at which time it was transferred to Shillinglaw. Photographer: Louis Buvelot Swiss landscape painter and portrait photographer, settled in Melbourne in 1864, admired by the artists from the Heidelberg area such as Tom Roberts and Arthur Streeton who bestowed him with the accolade of 'Father of Australian painting’. In the 1870s, his work increasingly drew elements from Australian landscape such as the bush land in works like Lilydale (1878) and Bush Track. Biography of Henry Hannington who was born in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland on 17 March 1819 and died in Ballarat at his residence in Crompton Street, Soldiers Hill on 1 January 1893 aged 73 years. Henry married Jane Crabb in the Independent Church in Melbourne in 1853. Jane died in Ballarat on the 23 January 1887,. Henry Hannington had various occupations including Shepherd, Miner, Trooper and Bricklayer. Robert Burrowes was born in Canada in 1826 and came to Australia and Bendigo in 1853. He initially opened a boot and shoe shop in Pall Mall and latera wine and spirit and grocery store in High Street. He was elected to the Bendigo Council in 1856. In 1855 he started the first fire brigade. In 1858 he married Sarah Ellen Vickery. He was elected to Parliament as the member for Bendigo and served 1866 -1877 and again 1880 - 1893. Artist's Statement: "Every Wednesday at 10 o'clock in the morning, from the beginning of Winter, 2011 to the end of Autumn, 2012, I photographed the same scene in my Ballarat garden. While the main subject is the weather of the moment, it includes a walnut tree killed in the recent drought, and a deciduous ornamental plum. There are 52 Wednesdays recorded in the tapestry; and 4 frames showing the seasonal changes in the plum tree. The colours bordering each panel are those of deciduous leaves on trees in my garden that week. It is said we only know eternity in the pulse of the moment; and permanence in the cycle of the seasons."Millicent REED Initally training in tapestry from Sara Lindsay at an ATW community class Millicent Reed received a Diploma of Art (Tapestry) from South West TAFE in 2009. Her strength and direction comes from being part of the unbroken continuum of tapestry art from the beginning of recorded time. The review explains the purpose of the Rail Trail with a brief narrative of the history behind Rosstown Sugar Mill Railway line. Concluding with information on the location of the Trail and the expected time required to walk the entire track included in the review is a map of the Rail Trail, which marks significant sites along the trail with historic pictures. 2/A newspaper article from THE AGE, dated Tuesday 21/10/1980 and written by Iola Matthews, reporting on the circumstances that led to the publication of the book RETURN TO ROSSTOWN written by Des Jowett and Ian Weickhardt. The article begins with a brief biography of the authors before moving into details of the book’s content, providing a further biography of W. Murray Ross which includes information on his financial ventures – particularly the Rosstown Rail – his marriage and children.
