These items are connected to the Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory. One is a share certificate from the company issued in 1909 to John Bergin of Nirranda and the other is a 1970 handwritten note, possibly from the Tait legal firm in Warrnambool indicating that John Bergin was no longer a shareholder. He may have been deceased or the shares may have been sold previously. The Warrnambool Cheese and Butter factory in Allansford is the oldest surviving dairy company in Australia. It was established in 1888 and is now operated by the Canadian firm Saputo. These items are of minor interest as mementoes of the early share certificates of the Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory, a major dairying business in the Warrnambool district for over 100 years. .1 This is a certificate extracted from a booklet of similar certificates. The Siege of Tobruk Medal was originally available to Australian, New Zealand, British, Indian and Polish troops who saw action during the Siege of Tobruk, between April and December 1941. The medal was commissioned and issued by the Rats of Tobruk Association in 1977. The medal was available to 18 BDE, 24 BDE, 26 BDE, 2/1 PIONEER's and other miscellaneous units. An interesting article from the Digest of World Reading about Canadian John McCrae and his famous poem "In Flanders Field". It tells of his war service and how the poem was published in Punch on 8 December 1915. He was in the medical service when he succumbed to pneumonia in January 1918. The journal article was sent to the Legacy Co-Ordinating Council who sent it to the archive. The notation H25 in red pen shows that it was part of the archive project that was trying to capture the history of Legacy. Collected by an earlier archive committee which shows the poem was important to the Legatees. The funnel colours on the model indicate the ship it represents was one of the early ships of the Allan shipping Line designated as a Royal Mail Carrier. Funnel colours are used to identify a ship's owners while at sea from a distance by other vessels. The Allan Shipping Line was started in 1819, by Captain Alexander Allan of Saltcoats, Ayrshire, trading and transporting between Scotland and Montreal Canada, a route which quickly became synonymous with the Allan Line. By the 1830s the company had offices in Glasgow, Liverpool and Montreal, with all of Captain Allan's five sons actively involved with the business. But his second son, Sir Hugh Allan, spearheaded the second generation. In 1854, Hugh launched the Montreal Ocean Steamship Company as part of the Allan Line, and two years later ousted Samuel Cunard to take control of the Royal Mail contract between Britain and North America. By the 1880s, the Allan Line was the world's largest privately owned shipping concern. In 1891, the company took over the State Line, founded in 1872, and was often referred to as the Allan & State Line. In 1897, Andrew Allan amalgamated the various branches of the Allan shipping empire under one company, Allan Line Steamship Company Ltd., of Glasgow. The company by then had added offices in Boston and London. In 1917, under Sir Montagu Allan, who represented the third generation of the Allan family, the company was purchased by Canadian Pacific Steamships, and by the following year, the Allan name had disappeared from commercial shipping. The Allan Line fleet had evolved for decades, changing as new ships were added, lost at sea, sold, or scrapped. The model in Flagstaff Hill's collection could be the SS Canadian or Indian; both were early Allan steam packets that had helped the Allan company secure the Royal Mail Atlantic contract in 1856.The model is of a Royal Mail steamship, with the probability the original ship was owned by the Allan Shipping Line in the mid-19th century and primarily used for the Atlantic mail run between England and Canada. This dictionary is a large tome containing a wealth of information current at the time of publication (1958). The Webster’s Dictionary is an American publication but it was known world-wide and would have been in many households in Australia in the mid 20th century. No information is available on A. M. Archibald (the signature in the front of the book)This book has no known local provenance but is retained as an example of an antiquarian item, a 60 year-old book.This is a large tome of 2129 pages, plus supplements of 160 pages. It has a faded dark green linen cover. The spine and the cover edges are damaged. The wording on the spine and cover are almost indecipherable. Inside the covers are images of a tree with branches representing Indo-European languages. The pages have alphabetical thumb tabs and these are double-sided with gold lettering. The pages contain black and white illustrations and coloured plates. The supplementary material includes coloured world maps, dictionaries of biography, geography and mythology and information on foreign words and phrases, abbreviations, Scripture and the history of Canada.A.M. Lithography is a method of printing, originally based on the immiscibility of oil and water. The printing is from a stone or a metal plate with a smooth surface. It was invented in 1796 by the German author and actor Alois Senefelder and was initially used for musical scores and maps. There were two sailing ships with the name Helen B Sterling a six masted vessel and an earlier four masted Helen B Stirling that is the subject of the lithograph depicting the rescue of the crew and passengers by the Australian light Cruiser Melbourne in a gale off three Kings islands 55 kilometres Northwest of Cape Reinga New Zealand. This Helen B Sterling was built as a four mast wooden auxiliary screw Schooner, known as a wind jammer of 1608 tons. The vessel was formally known as the “Tacoma” and owned by the Washington Shipping Corporation based in Seattle USA in 1917. This original Helen B Sterling was caught in this storm and eventually sunk after being abandoned by the crew. The second generation relatives of those who were passengers at the time of the foundering advise that the storm was more like a cyclone. The Zeehan and Dundas Herald reported on January 26th 1922 that the abandoned vessel was still afloat and drifting towards the New Zealand coast. The Kalgoorie Miner newspaper also had an article reporting that on the 7th Feb 1922 the crew, captain, first mate and their families after being heroically rescued by the crew of the Australian light Cruiser Melbourne were arriving in Sydney today aboard the steamer the “Maheno” from New Zealand.Lithograph appears to be by an unknown artist A M Duffield produced in 1924. THE CATARAQUI The Cataraqui was built in 1840 in Quebec, Canada, and wrecked on 4th August, 1845 off the west coast of King Island, Australia. The lives of 400 people on the emigrant ship were lost. Many of them were on government assisted passages from Britain and Ireland. Only nine people, one passenger and eight crew, survived the shipwreck. A man who lived on the island, sheltered them and five weeks later the group was rescued by the ship Midge, which took them to Melbourne. It was the largest civilian maritime disaster.The button is significant as an example of a 19th century clothing accessory. The button is also significant for its association with the 1840 Canadian built ship, Cataraqui. The Cataraqui is significant in maritime history as Australia's largest civilian maritime disaster. The wreck also has a connection to the establishment of the Cape Otway lighthouse and to Warrnambool’s history as Superintendent Charles LaTrobe came to the Warrnambool district several times in an effort to find the best route to the Cape Otway area. The all purpose 'Atomist' atomiser was used from the 1930s to the late 1960s. The atomiser had a detachable nasal mount, and a rubber bulb which was attached to a length of tubing. It also had an adjustable spray tip. It could be used as an anaesthetic cocaine or other spray. In the 1950s it was in extensive use as a laryngeal, nasal and throat spray. The spray nozzle could be turned upwards or downwards and was similar in appearance to the De Villiers Canadian spray. The atomiser could also be used as a vaginal douche with lotion for the treatment of vaginal infections. An atomizer spray consisting of a glass container with a hollow metal tube at front and long black rubber tubing attached to a rubber bulb at the rear. Glass container has residue of white liquid in it. WARNIING: dried white powdery substance may be arsenic. Contained in sealed bag. Handle wearing nitrile gloves and ensure examination is in open area, not enclosed space.

The 1st Australian Armoured Car Squadron was raised at Puckapunyal, Victoria in January 1946 from 4th Armoured Brigade volunteers. Following two months training it deployed to Japan as part of the occupation force joining the Australian 34th Brigade. The squadron was equipped with Canadian Scout Cars and Staghound Armoured Cars. The latter were found to be unsuitable for patrol duties on Japanese roads and replaced with additional scout cars. The 1st Armoured Car Squadron returned to Australia in December 1948 and became the basis for the 1st Armoured Regiment. David Kennedy(1825-1886) was a Scottish singer. Initially a church musician. HE had a large family many of whom were also singers and toured throughout the world. 1872-1876 the group toured Canada, New Zealand and Australia. In 1879 and 1880 they toured India and South Africa. In 1881 three of his children died in a fire at a Nice theatre. David died in South Africa but is buried in Scotland. These cross country ski boots are part of the pioneer ski recreational sport in the Victoria Alps. The mid 1900's saw the Victorian Alps begin to be used for recreational skiing, especially cross country. The majority of skiers at this point in time were either from the SEC Vic. Kiewa Hydro Scheme or from Melbourne. International skiers had better ski fields (ski lodges etc.) in Europe, the U.S.A. and Canada. With greater and better coverage of the Winter Olympics and some medal wins, skiing became more interesting and rewarding for city dwellers in Melbourne and Sydney.These ski boots are of great significance to the Kiewa Valley as it demonstrates that winter sports in the region have and still do attract not only skiers but also provide an employment (even though seasonal) avenue which "livens up" a small rural community and provides for a diversity of land usage which did not exist in the 1800's. Robert Burrowes was born in Canada in 1826 and came to Australia and Bendigo in 1853. He initially opened a boot and shoe shop in Pall Mall and latera wine and spirit and grocery store in High Street. He was elected to the Bendigo Council in 1856. In 1855 he started the first fire brigade. In 1858 he married Sarah Ellen Vickery. He was elected to Parliament as the member for Bendigo and served 1866 -1877 and again 1880 - 1893. On 23 April, the 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (3 RAR), under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Bruce Ferguson, and the 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, occupied prominent hills on either side of the seven-kilometre-wide valley, where a small tributary joined the Kapyong River. Also forward were headquarters units, tanks and artillery. The 1st Battalion, Middlesex Regiment, were to the rear. Early in the evening, retreating South Koreans streamed past the Commonwealth position, with Chinese forces closely intermingled. Soon afterwards a platoon of American tanks supporting 3 RAR was overrun. The Kapyong valley was too large an area to defend with the forces available, and the brigade was spread very thinly. Throughout the night the Chinese repeatedly pressed the Australian positions, attacking in waves over their own dead and wounded. At dawn, A Company, under the command of Major Bernard "Ben" O'Dowd, found that the Chinese had infiltrated its position, but a counter-attack was able to eject them. Meanwhile B Company, which had spent the night on a hill near the riiver, discovered Chinese occupying some old bunkers on a small knoll. Hand-to-hand fighting ensued with grenades and bayonets. C Company, under the command of Captain Reg Saunders, was in position to reinforce both A and B Companies. "Major O'Dowd then directed the radio operator to contact anyone. The American 1st Marine Division answered but their operator refused to believe who our operator was speaking for. Major O'Dowd took the phone and demanded to speak to the commanding officer. The general in charge of the [Marine] division came on the phone and told O'Dowd we didn't exist as we had been wiped out the night before. Major O'Dowd said, 'I've got news for you, we are still here and we are staying here.'" Private Patrick Knowles, 3 RAR, on the morning of 24 April 1951 Fighting continued throughout the day with the Australians holding their positions, and the Chinese also engaging D Company. But late on 24 April, with their position now untenable, the Australians were forced into a fighting withdrawal down a ridge to the valley, where they rejoined the brigade. Their withdrawal was supported by New Zealand artillery from the 16th Field Regiment. Having found the Canadian position unassailable, the Chinese made no further attacks. By the afternoon of 25 April the road through to the Canadians had been cleared of Chinese and 2 PPCLI was relieved by US Army units. On Anzac Day 1951, the Australians rested after a long fight. Thirty-two Australians were killed and 53 were wounded for their part in stalling the Chinese advance and preventing Seoul from falling into enemy hands.
