Set of three Christmas Cards prepared by Peter and Patti Duckett and sent to Mel Elliot. Printed photo on exterior with red printed ribbons, photo corners on inside with another photo and gold block print and the Duckett's address. Photographs by Peter Duckett or from his collection. .1 - Features a photo of Patti and Driver H.N. "Sam" Serman in front of X 217, 8/6/1957 and internally a photo of Members and Friends of the AETA taking delivery of X217 at Preston Workshops. Card text notes the tram on loan to PTC and will be going to Hawthorn - possibly a c2000 card. .2 - Photos and text of the Engine Room of the Ultimo Tramway Power Station. .3 - Photos of the Sandringham - Beaumaris Tramway c1900, including the Sandringham House Private Hotel. Published by Traction Publications, in 1961, edited by Jack Richardson with Norm Chinn and Robert Young. Provides details on the trams that operated in the cities. Has a map of the city tramways on the rear. 2nd copy from the collection of Colin Jones added 2/1/2020. 1307.2 - Book - 56 pages + card cover, printed on semi gloss paper, centre stapled, with two colour covers - as for .1. Printed 1967. Has a map of the Sydney system on the inside or the rear cover. The rear cover has a list of publications of the publisher. Photographs of fire trucks being tested for the roll over characteristics at Preston Workshops. .1 - .3 - Metropolitan Fire Brigade Board (Melbourne - MFBB) appliance or fire truck or pumper, being tested at Preston Workshops. Based on the number plate in .1 - c1969 - 1970 see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicle_registration_plates_of_Victoria (accessed 22/4/2020) The facility appears to be long enough to test a bus, but appears to be one that was stored and then brought out for use - see photo 8. .4 to .6 are of testing a UK truck on a more dedicated facility. .7 - workers, some ex MFB workshops possibly, winching rope .8 - the testing frame or lift panel with crane ropes attached and W6 tram No. 986 in the background. A copy of the Newsletter of the Fire Services Museum of Vic. 9/2021 featured some of these photos. Demonstrates the way the SEC advised passengers in Ballarat and Bendigo how the fare and charges systems worked and yielded information about the fare charges in force at the time. A copy was provided in each tram behind framed glass.Dyeline print of a drawing showing Ballarat Tramway (SEC) Fares, Charges, and Section Map. Also gives charges for Scholar's Monthly tickets, Luggage, Parcels, Newspapers and Chartered trams. Dated August 1965. All fares in shillings and pence. Essay, Richard Gilbert, "My Uncle Bill - The Tramway Man", 2014
Essay or article prepared by Richard Gilbert in 2014 about his Uncle Bill - William Simpson. His father Stephen Simpson was a cable tram conductor. After serving in the army in the medical service in Europe, Bill joined the MMTB in 1921 as a Conductor at Kew Depot and then as a driver or motorman. He recalls the accident with tram No. 65 at Deepdene when the tram was hit by the Deepdene Dasher. After a transfer to Malvern Depot in 1926, he remained there until 1944 when he worked in the electrical shop at Preston Workshops. He retired in 1959, passing in April 1985 aged 87 years. This item was published by the Ballarat Tramway Museum in the June 2020 issue of Fares Please! Photo of a cable tram set turning from Smith St into Gertrude St 22/3/1940, trailer 286. Wal Jack Negative number T147. Has destination of Spencer St. and an advert for The New Palais Royale at the Exhibition buildings. In the background is G. D. Langridge Real Estate building. On the street outside is a fire alarm point. Rod Atkins advised 6/9/2020: "I have been so impressed with the photo that is being used in Bellcord for the issue that did some digging. The photo is priceless! The photo is taken on a Friday (to my surprise) mid-afternoon given the shadows. Did you notice the flip side of the dummy destination - Clifton Hill. Hard working cable tram line to the end - licence to print money for the board. The building on the South east corner. - G.D. Langridge & Sons Auctioneer. This was a Melbourne "institution" . George David Langdon was a local identity who went on to become MLA for Collingwood. ot sure when the business started but could have been in the 1860s or 70's Well before the cable trams. George died on 24th March 1891. The business survived till well after the war." Photograph of cable cars in Elizabeth St at the corner with Collins St. Has the Elizabeth St station in the view, along with Craigs and the Royal Bank. Rod Atkins advised 24/08/2020: "Dates from around 1914. taken 11.53 am in high summer. The Flinders Street Railway station looks complete but we still have all the telephone cables on poles in both Elizabeth and Collins Streets. I don't know the year they all went underground. We have two standard "Fitzroy" trams in Collins Street and one West Melbourne tram with standard eight-window trailer - no bogie trailers in the photo. Some of the West Melbourne trailers were still six window cars in the 1920's. The major building in the photo is the "Royal Bank" on the South East Cnr. of Collins and Elizabeth Street.
