Gathering is a series of contemplative sculptural objects that represent a visual continuity between the Australian landscape and the city. They embody totemic beings which hold the beliefs, values and attitudes of an individual who resides within the urban context, yet has a deep connection to place through their engagement with temporal moments and meaningful interactions. They aim to facilitate dialogue between the viewer and the viewed, seeking to re-orient an individual's perception, awareness and values surrounding the importance of fostering a connection and sense of place with the land we walk on.Wangaratta Art Gallery Collection. The wagga was owned by the great uncle of the donor's husband, George Stephens. Mr Stephens was a mining engineer in the late 1800s to early 1900s in Stawell, Main Lead (near Beaufort), Diamond Creek and Costerfield in Victoria. His last residence was at Bosterfield, where the wagga was used as a bed quilt in the mid 1940s. It may have also been used in the childhood home of Mr Stephens at Stawell. Mr Stephens saved the life of a blacksmith at Diamond Creek Gold Mine circa 1910.A wagga made from men's suits and coats, unpicked and sewn together. In the early 1920s Australia was gifted six J class submarines from the Royal Navy. These were the latest and largest submarines built by the RN for service in World War I. They were competent but were in service with the Royal Navy for only a short time before the end of the war. Once in Australia they were placed into service but there was little appetite for submarines or in fact any other military endeavour in the early ‘twenties’. The world was exhausted from a long and dirty war followed by a devastating Influenza Epidemic.
