These eight photographs of Army Survey Regiment personnel with the Inter-Service Sailing Trophy were taken on the bank of Fortuna’s Lake at Bendigo circa 1980. Army Survey Regiment’s personnel were encouraged to participate in Inter-Area, Inter-Service and Combined-Service sporting competitions held annually. In early civilization's cereal grains such as maize, wheat, barley etc. were stored in large airy buildings, often raised up from the ground to reduce infestation by pests and vermin. Ancient Egyptian and early Hebrew writings include reference to such buildings. Smaller quantities of food were stored in baskets made from woven grasses or leaves. In more recent times but prior to the invention of the refrigerator many food products were stored in the home as preserves or pickles, often in heat sealed jars. Dry food items were stored in vermin proof metal containers and could be found in any early colonial kitchen. Items such as coffee, tea, rice and sago were stable food types and needed longer term storage and a higher degree of protection from vermin and the elements, a common material used during this time was sheet metal or tin such as is used today in a common form of storage the biscuit tin. An early example of colonial food storage used in a domestic setting, it is interesting to note the subject items have provision to be locked. This indicates the value early colonial settlers placed on the contents and used to prevent pilfering. The subject items are now sought by collectors. Canister set; set of four canisters. Melton and District Historical Society: Railway stations were a hive of activity during the 1900s, transporting produce such as meat, dairy, hay and chafff from the Melton district to Melbourne. Rockbank station served the nearby chaff mill. From Melton Express and Sunbury News, 1910. When Mr Barrie started some 10 years ago with a travelling chaff cutter and a portable engine, and now he has behind him two large sheds, with three chaffcutters, a screw press and a damper and the necessary machinery to work the same, which is proof enough of the energy and zeal he has put forth. Lately he has started another mill a Rockbank with Mr R Barrie in charge and Mr W Barrie in charge at the Melton shed. Much regret is expressed at the departure of Mr Barrie having won the high esteem of his employees and farmers an all who have had any dealings with him. This organ was gifted by the Bethel Community in 1890 to the then Victorian Seamen's Mission, originally founded by the Bethel Union in 1857. The gift was intended to assist with worship. Despite all appearance, this organ is not a pipe organ but a reed organ that works in a similar manner to an accordion. In May 1890, the sum of seventy pounds was put towards the purchase of the organ. The sum being raised via subscriptions. The organ was inaugurated in September 1890. Jabez Carnegie (1832-1892), importer of piano and organs in Melbourne, had made a trip to Europe and Canada in 1887 and had secured the agency of Bell organs. W. Bell & Co were a Canadian organ and piano manufacturer, considered the premier organ manufacturer of the time. W Bell & Co changed its name to Bell Organ and Piano Co in 1888 meaning this organ had to be manufactured prior to the name change. The organ was first used in the mission main room from 1890 to 1915 when the St Nicholas chapel was built at the back (see item 0548. It was transfered to the new Port Melbourne mission in 1937 (link on postcard from State Library Victoria). In 1972, it was transferred to the Holy Trinity Church in Bay Street after the closure of the Mission In the late 1980s during a National Trust campaign to save the building, the organ was sold by the Anglican Men's Society to the Trust's organ committee, who carried out some restoration work and returned it to the former Missions to Seamen chapel. In 1991 the Office of Major Projects had control of the whole 'Bayside' development site. With the Mission to Seamen Building emptied and proposed for demolition, the Office of Major Projects removed the organ and placed it in storage in various locations - finally, in the Museum of Victoria store in Abbotsford. In 1995-6, enquiries by Jim Hillis resulted in the return of the organ to the control of the Port Melbourne HIstorical & Preservation Society. As the Society had no suitable location for the organ, several churches and schools in Port Melbourne were approached to take the organ with no results. The nearby suburbs were suggested next. Finally the Melbourne Maritime Museum (Polly Woodside) was approached and agreed to place it in their Museum on a long term loan. In 1997 it was on display in no 5 shed South Wharf (23/3/1997). In 2006, the Polly Woodside South Wharf site was to be re-developed, and they could no longer retain the organ. Accordingly, on 4 May 2006, the organ was transferred to the Mission To Seafarers building in Flinders Street Extension as an indefinite loan (refer OL 022) The PMHPS deaccessioned it to finally transfered it in 2018 to MTSV.(See also acquisition details re 21st C finalisation of acquisition) This organ is a tangible reminder of the longevity of the Mission to Seafarers, a link with the original Bethel Union which was instrumental in 1856 calling a public meeting and inviting subscriptions by various non-conformist churches to found a mission to Seamen. Rev Kerr-Johnson delivered the first service in 1857 aboard the Emily. The Mission to Seafarers has been in operation ever since and continues to operate to the same purpose today.Large reed organ that looks like a pipe organ with fifteen elaborately painted pipes bearing a floral motif. The body of the organ is elaborately decorated in carved wood. It has 17 knobs above the keyboard both which can be concealed when the keyboard cover is lowered. In the 19th century, J & G Meakin was known for the vast quantities of cheap ironstone china it produced for the domestic English market and export to Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United States. From around 1970, designs included Liberty, Sterling, Trend, Classic, and Heirloom. Some of these were influenced by earlier designs. The newer wares can be distinguished by back stamp markings such as 'permanent colours', 'everlasting colour', or 'dishwasher proof'. J & G Meakin had close family and corporate affiliations to the potteries Johnson Brothers, and Alfred Meakin Ltd, which explains why many patterns are similar, if not almost the same. There was a takeover by J. & G. Meakin in 1968 of Midwinter Pottery. The firm was then taken over by the Wedgwood Group in 1970. In 2000 production under the Meakin name ceased and their long-established works, Eagle Pottery, was then used for the production of Johnson Bros pottery. Built in 1923-1927, the school is the gift from the children of the state of Victoria, Australia, to the children of Villers-Bretonneux as proof of their love and good-will towards France. Twelve hundred Australian soldiers, fathers and brothers of these children, gave their lives for the heroic recapture of the town on April 24th and 25th, 1918. On the front of the building there are two plaques (one in French and one in English) referring to this. In the School Yard, as well as an Aboriginal style mural created by the students of the school and inaugurated on ANZAC Day 2009, is an inscription over the porch on a green background in yellow writing saying : DO NOT FORGET AUSTRALIA Due to the strong bond of friendship between the Australian population and the inhabitants of Villers-Bretonneux. This message expresses the need to remember and show gratitude. Also situated in the school is the Victoria Hall, with its wooden paneling, co-ordinated by the Ballarat Technical Art School with most of the carving being undertaken by Australian sculptor John Grant of Daylesford Technical College in Victoria. Clive entertained over 500 guests with a personal address of his time as a young Legacy boy. Clive will be seen later in the year as part of Legacy's Annual Badge Appeal." One of the families which ran these services was Hicks Bros, which from circa 1921 operated a ferry service from Princess Walk (Melbourne) to Studley Park. This is one of a series of 17 black and white undated photographic proofs donated to the Kew Historical Society in 2013 by the Queenscliffe Historical Museum. The series includes images of individuals, tea rooms, ferries, motor launches, ocean liners and tugs. In 1953, the owner of Hicks Bros was involved in an inquest into the drowning of a Ukrainian tourist on a ferry operated by Melbourne Ferries, a rival firm. In published reports of the inquest, reference is made to a number of photographs taken by Robert Irvine Atchison, part-owner of Hicks Bros. A regular event for the widows was a Christmas concert at the Melbourne Town Hall. The performers were the RAAF Central Band. Held in December each year. These photos are the same event as black and white photos and a proof sheet 911202A and 011202B (01335). This collection of 12 photos was most likely taken in 1980. The photos were most likely taken in Cartographic Squadron’s Ante Room, the Attic and small offices on the top floor of Fortuna Villa. The computer based Editwriter typesetting system was introduced in 1975 as a replacement to the aging Fotosetter machine. It was operated by a specialised technician, who generated a large variety of map type styles and sizes quickly and reliably, as well as text panels. CPL Richards performed this task for several years and in photo .1P and .2P is reading off a type order next to the computer monitor. Output on Copy proof adhesive backed stripping type film replaced messy wax and spray adhesives in 1978. The Editwriter capability supported all RASvy units and contractor type setting requirements. Scribing was the cartographic process of drafting features such as drainage, relief, vegetation, roads and culture on specially coated map reproduction material. The cartographic technician scribed out the map feature such as a contour to a specified line width on the map sheet, using a tool affixed with a sapphire tipped cutter. The quality control edit (Proving) stage of map production was the first opportunity to inspect a proof of the map independently and systematically. Proving tasks were carried out by technicians conversant of the map product specification and task requirement, however, was not involved in its production. Corrections were identified, marked up and sent to back to the correcting section or contractors. Terrain Embossing was a manual map production technique to produce hill shading on medium to small scale graphics and air charts. SPR John Martin is seen in photos .8P to.10P using a fine embossing metal stylus to push down on the drainage impression on a thin malleable opaque plastic material (AK Poligraphy). Ridge lines were then pushed down using the contour impression as a guide, on the opposing side of the AK Poligraphy to create a 3D plastic model terrain effect. The map impression was sprayed with white paint and photographed to create a contone tone hill shade. SPR Gina (Coore) Neilson is seen in photo .11P washing a contone positive of a land mass in a solution. The contone components were registered to the map sheet, as shown in photo .12P and masked using an air brush and a halftone negative was then created. The terrain embossing method of producing hill shading was more efficient to produce than previous specialised artistic methods such pencil/eraser and air brush. This is a set of three photographs of personnel from the Detachment - Army Survey Regiment taken in front of its main map production building at Bonegilla, Victoria in c1973. This cartographic map production sub-unit of the Army Survey Regiment operated in buildings owned by the School of Military Survey from 17th of June 1970 to the 30th of September 1985. A total of 800 topographic maps ranging in scale from 1:25,000 to 1: 250,000 scale were completed. A major focus of production in the 1970s was the cartographic completion of the Papua-New Guinea 1:100,000 map series and the Flexiflow quality control system was developed as a tool to coordinate production. The Flexiflow system comprised a series of job plans and charts linked to a task allocation to resource magnetic planning board. Using critical path analysis and task prioritisation, complex job planning was efficiently scheduled, and re-prioritisations readily made. Reproduction requirements were effectively coordinated by way of weekly courier to the Army Survey Regiment at Bendigo. Supervisors and technicians fully embraced the system as they could understand their role, others around them and the positive production achievements. WO1 Bill Boyd (who does not appear in this photograph) was the technical warrant officer for 11 years at the Detachment was awarded the OAM, the Order of Australia Medal for leading the development and the implementation of the Flexiflow system. By mid-1982, production of maps at these scales was undertaken digitally on Bendigo’s AUTOMAP 2 system and the Detachment reverted to production of small-scale large format RAAF aeronautical charts. Detachment personnel managed to produce 18 charts in the following two years, which was an impressive achievement for the staff, given major differences in format, specification and scales. Development of digital production of aeronautical charts in 1984-85 led to gradual reduction in production output and contracting out production was instigated to meet the shortfall and as a consequence the Detachment closed in September 1985. From the Imperial War Museums website (IWM UK): Second World War period transceiver set widely used by US, and Allied, Armed Forces in Italy, N W Europe, and the Pacific. The US Signal Corps developed the SCR-536 early in the Second World War, It was produced from 1942 onwards by the Galvin Manufacturing Co. By 1945 130,000 had been produced. The SCR-536 was an extremely popular set and was colloquially known as a "Handie-Talkie". It consisted of a five-valve, low-power, battery operated, AM (HF) transceiver that was designed for portability and ease of operation. It featured a single channel crystal control between 3.5 and 6Mc/s, and it had an R/T communication range of 1 mile over land and 3 miles over salt water. The set was switched into a receiving mode by extending the telescopic aerial, and to transmit the press-to-talk switch was depressed. The aerial was protected by a connected cover. The set was well-engineered and designed and could be held in one hand, hence "Handie-Talkie" . It was used virtually everywhere in the world, weighed only 2kg, and was proofed against fungi and moisture.The SCR-536 was also modified for use in military gliders under the designation SCR-585.Short range portable transceiver. For about 40 years the corner of Hargraves and Williamson Streets in Bendigo in rural Victoria had been known for its arresting aroma. From a hole in a window wafted the smell of Gillies Brothers' meat pies.The Gillies window, along with the nearby Shamrock Hotel, ANZ Bank and Post Office, was one of the delights of Bendigo and proof that mass-produced food can still be delicious. Gillies went from strength to strength, surviving listing on the second board and a handover to a younger generation of managers.Gillies had three factories, 10 shops in rural Victoria and Melbourne. Les Gillies, one of three brothers who founded the baking business after the difficult drought years preceding 1950, admits that the company has not always been run along the most modern business methods. Change began with the preparation of a business plan subsidised by the Victorian Department of Industry, Technology and Resources in 1974. Prepared by Cruickshanks, the plan formed the basis of the company's float on the second board. Capital expanded to $4.4 million. In 1988, a second plan was produced by Chris Mason and Associates covering business, marketing, computer utilisation and human resources. Diana Jones (1939-2009) was President of the Association for the Blind from 1985 until 1992. In her 8 years as President a great deal was accomplished. New centres were opened or extended throughout Victoria and the Metropolitan area, volunteer services expanded and the Vision Resource Centre at Kooyong was built into which 3RPH radio was relocated. A Vision Information hotline, audiology services and the National Centre for Ageing and Sensory Loss were established, the Braille and Talking Book libraries was incorporated into the Association and the Charlie Bradley Cricket Pavilion opened at Kooyong. In 1990 Diana Jones became a member of the first Board of Directors of the newly incorporated Association for the Blind Ltd which ushered in a new era, requiring strict observance of financial and accounting methods in order to ensure continued Government funding. Mrs Jones was highly regarded by clients, volunteers and staff as a capable hard-working leader. Her services to the Association and over many years to the wider community, were recognised in her appointment as a Member of the Order of Australia in the 1993 Queen's Birthday Honours. SPR Tracy (Parker) Ash was the unit’s Miss Golden North section entrant in the Miss Australia Quest.
