The original date for the laying of Foundation stone for the first Mission building at Australian Wharf in 1906 had to be changed to the 5th of February 1907 due to industrial action at the Wharves. See scrapbooks and clippings for details. Lord Northcote the Governor General officiated. The invitation marks the establishment for the first time at the Australian Wharf official recognition of the need to establish a Mission for seafarers in this location, some six years after presentation of the letter in 1897 from 22 Captains urging and requesting a respectable and convenient facility. Just ten years later the Mission would have to move to an adjacent site and raise funds for yet another Mission building in 1916. A heavy card with crimped edge with commercially printed invitation in cursive scripts from the Archbishop of Melbourne and the Members of the Committee of the Mission. This scent bottle would have been attached to a belt or handbag and would have belonged to a woman of some means. It would have been in use when the owner was outside or travelling and used to combat the unsavoury smells of a farm or industrial area. This item is of interest as an object used by women more than a hundred years ago. It has no known local provenance and will be useful for display This is an egg-shaped perfume bottle made of opaque glass (opaline?). It has an inner lining and cotton wool inside the lid of the top. The top is brass with a brass hinge. Attached to the lid is a brass chain and circular ring to attach the bottle to a chatelaine belt or handbag. The building is the former Sunbury State School 1002, which was relocated to the former Industrial School in Jacksons Hill in 1999. The Federation Style building replaced an earlier school building in 1912 and it is now incorporated into the Sunbury Community Health Centre complex. A school in Sunbury has occupied the site on the corner of Macedon and Stawell Streets from 1870 to 1999. Small dark red leather-bound folder/binder/booklet. Front cover has a gold circular stamp in the upper centre of cover. Folder contains brief information about the Albion Mills in Geelong, several images of sheep and a glossary of common woolen and textile industry terms. Binoculars have been in existence for over 100 years for recreational and military use. The Carl Zeiss factory in Jena, Germany was founded in 1846 and manufactured optical systems such as cameras, binoculars and riflescopes and industrial measurement devices and medical equipment.
