Booklet - A survey of the North Australian Coast on AK121 Aroetta, NT Force, NT Coastal Recce Unit RAE, 6 Aust Army Topo Survey Corps, AKA121 Aroetta, 28 Mar 1945
The work of the Australian Survey Corps is to make maps for the Army. At the outbreak of war very little of the mainland had been mapped, especially the northern parts. The best maps in existence of the N.T. coast in Dec "41 were those made by Matt Flinders in 1801 -1802. The Army soon got out new maps of all important areas including much of the inland. Later it was decided to bring the complete coastline up to date. Several parties put in between them six months on the coast during the dry season of "45 but a couple more months would be needed to complete the program when the "wet" interrupted the work. A small section from Buckingham Bay - Groote Eylandt was still untouched and this diary covers that section of the N.T. Coast. A survey party of four men was chosen who were to be transported from place to place by the AK121 Aroetta - a ketch of 25 tons belonging to an army unit called N.T. Coastal Recce whose work it was to patrol the coast and as well do air - sea rescue. The survey party: Lieut Jack Worsley (the Loot) Sgt jack Love, Spr Jack Cook, Spr Pat Hede. Crew of Aroetta: Liet Ralph Warne (Skipper), Sgt Buckley (Buck) (First Mate and Ordly Rm), Sgt Jim Terjesen (Jumbo) Bosun, WO2 Tom Davis (Engineer), Cpl Kevin Monk (Artificer), L/Cpl Jack Cox (Deck Hand), Spr Jack Andrews (Signals), Spr Laurie Rament (Ass. Engineer), Spr McKenzie (Mac) (Cook). The complete history is not available after July 31 1945. The remainder of the notes are very badly water-damaged and in some places unreadable.A4 Booklet, plain paper with text and diagrams and half tone photograph of Lt Jack Worsley with plastic binderSigned by George Barton Maj. for LtCol GS. Ceremonial object - Ecclesiastical Linen set, 1907 to mid 20th century
The items in this collection of Ecclesiastical Linen were used by St. Andrews Anglican Church on the corner of the Esplanade and 14 Drummond St, Dennington, Victoria. The first Anglican service was conducted on December 22nd, 1907. The church was decommissioned in January 2003. The items donated include Maniples, Chalice Covers, a Goblet Cover, Altar Cloths, Matts, Priest's scarf, armband and sashes, and a bag that is a cover for the Baptismal Towel. HISTORY OF ST ANDREWS, DENNINGTON The land on which St Andrews Church was built in Dennington was surveyed in the 1840s and reserved for church purposes in 1855. In 1889 the Farnham Dairy factory relocated to Dennington and the town began to grow as involvement in the dairy industry increased in the area. In 1896 plans for a church hall on the reserved land were considered and on 22nd December 1907, the first Anglican Service was conducted in Dennington, with 60 people attending. In August 1909 the first building was opened with a midweek evening service conducted by the Rev. J.A. Coe. The Sunday School was opened the following year. In that same year, Nestle took over the Farnham dairy plant. On December 20th, 1914, a new church was opened in memory of Andrew Peacock, who passed away in 1912. The funds had been raised by the community and 150 attended the morning service. The building was described as a simple edifice with a plain exterior and high, wide pointed windows, and a comfortable porch entrance, all of which gave a pleasing impression of light and space. In 1935 the average attendance for morning services was just over 22 people. In 1936 extensive repairs and replacements were carried out. In 1947 the first recorded Pastoral Festival took place and in the same year, a Ladies Guild was formed. In 1954 water services were connected to the church building. Many items of furniture, furnishings and books were donated over the life of the church, including handworked linen items. Further items were added due to the work of the Ladies Guild, as well as donations in memory of church and community members. These items of Ecclesiastical Linen are significant as examples of handworked embroidery and drawn-thread work from the early 20th century. They are also examples of a collection of items used for church services during this period. The Ecclesiastical Linen is also significant for its association with the early development of the local township of Dennington and the importance of setting aside land in the 1850s for the purpose of religious worship. The Ecclesiastical Linen is also significant for its connection to St Andrews Anglican Church, Dennington. The church was funded and attended by the local community in the early 1900s and is now listed on the Victorian Heritage Database (VHD 118083) as a building of historical and social significance. Set of Ecclesiastical Linen. The items were once used in St. Andrew's Anglican Church, Dennington, Victoria, between the years 1907 and 2003. All of the handmade items are in white fabric. Some also have embroidered emblems, tassels and drawn-thread work. White embroidery thread has been used for most of the decorated items, with the following exceptions, which have been embroidered with coloured thread; the communion linen, the Priest's scarf, armband and sash, the altar cloths, mats and a cover for the baptismal towel. Two items have hand written inscriptions.(See individual objects for details)flagstaff hill, warrnambool, maritime museum, shipwreck coast, great ocean road, st andrews anglican church dennington, dennington church, warrnambool church 1907, ecclesiastical linen, linen for religious service, communion linen, priest's sash, baptismal towel, maniple, eucharist, emblem of rope and cross, embroidered religious cloths, embroidered celtic cross, drawn thread, chalice covers, handmade linen, embroidered linen, stylised cross, the english church, ladies guild dennington, nestle, farnham dairy, andrew peacock, victorian heritage register vhr 118083, hand worked linen, handworked embroidery, j.a. coe -

Amber Bead Mandala, Rosemary De Dear, (exact); 2002
MEDIUM: Digital print. DESCRIPTION: A fractal exploration on 192 gsm archival matt. Image ranges from yellow, orange, and red to darker tones. Gold outer frame with a glass front. The Mandalas geometric designs are symbolic of the universe and used in Hinduism and Buddhism as an aid to meditation. The creative possibilities that exist in these sacred circles, are often based on a step-and-repeat principle, centre, and symmetry. Here we see this put into practise. The mandala has an iris quality about it with 16 pillars pulling centrally to what looks like a pupil, the centre of the mandala. This then has more points around it and then more once again. This fractal approach gives the work a textural depth. The use of blurring and merging in a kaleidoscopic fashion creates movement, the circular flow repetitive and calming. The use of reds throughout mandata art represent the glowing sun and of fire, red generally taken to be the color of life, love, joy and rage, the polar values of the color. Orange the colour of cheerfulness and gaiety, a colour mixed from red and yellow, it stands for kind-heartedness and warm-heartedness. Drawing - Image - black and white, Angus McMillan, c1835
Angus McMillan named the Avon River after the river of the same name in his native Scotland. In 1840 he established a pastoral run at Bushy Park, north-west of the township. William Odell Raymond established a run in the area in 1842, and built his house, Strathfieldsaye, during 1848–54. European settlement did not take place without resistance, and in return, massacres were inflicted by Angus McMillan and others on Gunai people, especially between the years of 1840 and 1850. (wikipedia) The first application for the 'Bushy Park' run appears in the “Port Phillip Gazette” on 13 August 1843. It was taken up by Angus McMillan, who also took up the 'Boisdale' run for his employer Lachlan Macalister at the same time. In March 1844 a Licence to occupy the 16,000 acre 'Bushy Park' was granted to McMillan. In the late 1840s Andrew Martin and Matt McCraw built Angus McMillan's Bushy Park homestead. Aboriginal killings in Gippsland area most often were never formally recorded, but lived on in folklore, mainly in place names pinpointing what some historians now refer to as "massacres", and others as "conflicts". There is Boney Point, on Lake Wellington, Butchers Creek, near Metung, Slaughterhouse Gully, at Buchan, Skull Creek, at Lindenow, and, notoriously, Warrigal Creek, at Woodside. "Here, according to a couple of contemporary - though not eyewitness - reports, between 50 and 150 blacks were killed in an orgy of revenge after the murder and mutilation of a leading Scots settler, Ronald Macalister. If anybody had any doubts about the fitness of commemorating McMillan's name, no one voiced them then. Gippsland was, and still is, dotted with stone cairns tracing his route from Omeo, down the Tambo Valley to the fertile plains where he was to make (and lose) his fortune. And where, according to a growing body of opinion, he was to lead the "Highland Brigade", a band of armed settlers, against the Kurnai. History is fiction agreed on, and it is written by the winners. For most of the past 150 years, McMillan has been hailed as a trail-blazing pioneer. The legend began to crumble 20 years ago with publication of new histories, which at first outraged Gippsland historical societies and old residents, but which have gradually changed the way McMillan is viewed. ... Still, not all McMillan's contemporaries agreed with the "Highland Brigade" and its methods. Henry Meyrick, an English-born squatter, wrote to relatives in disgust about his neighbours. He estimated that 450 had been killed, and wrote: "Men, women and children are shot down whenever they can be met with. Some excuse might be found for shooting the men by those who are daily getting their cattle speared, but what they can urge in their excuse who shoot the women and children I cannot conceive." Photograph - CSP In-house Bid Announcement, Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo, 1994
This is a set of 14 photographs of an All-Staff meeting held by the lake at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo on the 24th of April 1994. At this meeting CO LTCOL Duncan Burns announced that under Defence’s Commercial Support Program (CSP), the In-House bid submitted in 1993 by a team led by then CO LTCOL Bob McHenry was successful. The In-House bid proposed the establishment of an organisation based at Fortuna to carry out non-core production with 150 of the 373 Survey Corps positions converted to Defence civilian positions. 110 of the Defence civilian positions would be filled voluntarily by military personnel under Section 81B of the Public Service Act 1992 with the remaining 40 positions filled by Public Service recruitment. Other options offered to Survey Corps personnel were postings to 1st Topographic Survey Squadron in Enoggera, QLD, transfer to another Corps in the Australian Army or discharge from the ADF. The In-House bid also proposed 143 Survey Corps military positions to remain at Fortuna to perform ‘core strategic non-sovereign tasks.’ However, Army subsequently decided to abolish the 143 positions, disband 4th Field Survey Squadron, Adelaide, SA and lastly, the demise of the Royal Australian Survey Corp in June 1996. This period of the Army Survey Regiment’s history is covered in more detail in pages 160 to 162 of Valerie Lovejoy’s book 'Mapmakers of Fortuna – A history of the Army Survey Regiment’ ISBN: 0-646-42120-4.This is a set of 14 photograph of an All-Staff Meeting held at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo on the 24th of April 1994, to announce the success of Army’s Defence’s Commercial Support Program (CSP) In-house Bid. TOM COLLINS–from the reel to reel tape recording at Melton 1969 In the years between 1890 and to about 1913 Melton was a quiet little hamlet alongside the Toolern Creek, once called the Pennyroyal Creek, 24 miles from Melbourne on the Ballarat Road. There was a fair amount of woodland left around it, mostly grey and yellow box with sheoak, and golden wattle, which in spring time made a rather attractive setting. Most of the premises were in the main or High Street, with its line of elm and pepper trees on each side. Unitt, McKenzie and Henry streets each contained only a few dwellings. Hotels were four in number, Minns’s, Mrs Hay licencee, now Mac’s, Golden Fleece – Sheblers. The Royal or Ryan’s as it was then called, later Graham had the licence, and the Raglan - Kilpatricks had the licence and afterwards Tom Manning. This was situated about where Mr K. Young had his residence. There was a store attached to the hotel until about 1900. Both the Royal and the Raglan were delicensed, later on the Royal being converted to a green grocery and a boarding house, the Raglan was demolished. The Royal green grocery and boarding house was kept by E Carew and after he retired, E Radford. The Post and Telegraph Office was on the opposite side of the street to the Raglan Hotel about two doors west of the Shire Hall and was kept by Mrs Ferris and Lady Farmer until her retirement, when it was carried on by Miss Lottie Ross. A store was attached to the Post Office and was sometimes used as a store and at one time housed the National Bank. There were two full time banks at Melton, the other being the Commercial which built premises about 1904 and on the corner of High and Smith Streets, which it still occupies. Mr G Egan was the manager of the Commercial and Mr Stradling and later Mr Lee of the National. However as business was not thought good enough they reverted to a part time branch operated from Bacchus Marsh. Grocer shops were Chalmers, with a news agency and drapery now Arnolds, Jongebloeds had the bakery. Mr Fox also a produce merchant, was where Melton Real Estate is now, it was later occupied by Buchanans, Atleys, and Mrs Ross. Not long after the War Mrs Ross built the Post Office, since demolished where Miss Lottie Ross was the Post Mistress and later built the store which she conducted. It was later turned into a factory and in now the barbers shop. McNichols was just west of the Minns Hotel. He travelled as far a Ballan weekly, buying calves and dairy produce for sale in Melbourne. Afterwards he sold the business and bought Minns Hotel and changing the name to Macs. Blacksmiths were three in number. Blackwoods – later James Byrnes next door to Jongebloeds. Alex Cameron who learnt his trade with Blackwoods had his shop about the rear of where Ken Youngs Garage is now he later moved to the north west corner of High and Alexander Street. He was also the Registrar of Birth and Deaths and Electoral Registrar. After his retirement he was weighbridge keeper at Melton South. Two of his sons were engaged in the carpentry trade, but both died at an early age. Whittingtons shop was a few doors east of the Mechanics Hall and it was later occupied by Gordon Macdonald who did business there until about eight years ago. The butchers of the period were George Graham, that is where Mandy Lees hairdressing establishment is now. Euan MacDonald had premises later occupied by Whittingtons blacksmith shop. Later shifting next door. He left here about 1901, he slaughtererd animals at a slaughter house right where Chas Jones now resides, it had previously been a slaughter house and butcher shop of that site. George Spring also operated as a butcher for two or three years about the 1900 or so. Ted Simpsons shop was where John Kontek now has his Estate Agency, he used it as an branch shop from Bacchus Marsh bringing meat from there by a two horse lorry. Jimmy Butler the manager was well known and loved, his son was later a steeplechase jockey. The Court House and Police Station would be built sometime before 1900. The Constables at the time were McGuire, later Wade, Riely and McKenzie after that Robert Wilson and Seinfort were here, they were a bit later on. The Mechanics Hall was first opened by Ryan of the Royal Hotel who sold it to the Hall Committee. It was on Unitt Street and it was moved by McLellans the house shifters from Unitt Street to its present site. Bluestone premises formerly occupied by the bootmaker Carew, were later demolished and replaced by the brick frontage to the Hall. Keith Orensini [?] the local bricklayer built brick portion to the Hall. In the cottage adjoining the Hall a Frenchman named Baudin, had a boot repairing business. This cottage was the later residence of J Hill, a local carpenter and builder from whom I learnt my trade. Granny Watts was the well known local nurse and operated the Mid-Wifery Hospital in Yuille Street on the Sherwin Street corner. Mrs Nissen was on the opposite side of Yuille Street a short distance nearer the township. She conducted the laundry. Carew had a greengrocers shop next door to the Post Office in the High Street for some time before transferring to the Royal Hotel site. He also bought [?] calves for killing. W Cecil was a tank maker and also had a produce round, he lived on Pyke and Sherwin Street. Later Gus Shebler, builder and carpenter engaged in tank making being well known for good workmanship. Shebler was very energetic in forming the Gun Club which met for a good number of years where the golf course now has its headquarters. Of the four churches only three are in use, Christ Church, Scots and St Dominics. The Methodist closed down but later transferred to Melton South. Monthly stock sales were held at the yards in Unitt Street at Minns Hotel by McPhail Auctioneers, later held by McCarthur and McLeod. After the Council built the pound and sale yards they transferred sales to these premises, but lack of patronage caused them to be abandoned. A familiar sight in the district was blind Bob Nixon, who lived in a tumbled down cottage in Centenary Road near W Coburns, being led by his dog down the road to Melton, that is Palmerston street, to the Post Office, butcher and baker for his supplies and then back home. He was able to do his own cooking and other chores. Sundays he would come down Raleighs Road to the back of the church and tie his dog to a tree. Someone, mostly one of the boys would guide him into the church and out again after the service, when the dog would lead him home again. State School 430, a two roomed bluestone building it was the only school in the district, none at Melton South. The nearest would be Rockbank and Toolern Vale. Scholars had a fair distance to walk in most cases. The teachers were Mr T Lang Headmaster. I put a query here, Miss Winters, I’m not certain of the name, Mrs Skinner and Miss Silke as Assistant Teachers. Miss Augusta Cecil and Miss Maud Lang were Junior teachers. One boy who attended the school about the turn of the century was Hector Fraser who resided with his parents in Keilor Road, where Jim Gillespie now lives. He was an excellent gun shot and at the age of about 17 years his father took him to France or Monaco where he won the Gran Prix for pigeon shooting and became the champion boy shot of the world. However he died there from pneumonia. He shot under the name of “Parvo”. The Melbourne Hunt Club used to meet in Keilor Road north side just east of the Toolern Creek on what was originally Pykes Run. This was also the place where the races were held and the Sports Meetings. Dave Murphy, employed at Clarke’s Rockbank Station usually provided the fox which he liberated for the Club. Greyhound coursing was usually held on Moylans property Mt Kororoit, or Mt Misery as it was known then. Later it was held at Melton Park, Mr Matt Carberry was the judge and Percy Cook the slipper. Early in the 1900’s the Recreation Park was created and the Caledonian and the ANA sports meetings were held there, they were annual events. L Paterson from Melton South was a successful competitor in all the cycling events as a young man. He later in life became the Deputy Chief Officer of the Metropolitan Fire Brigade. The present Chief Officer of the Fire Brigade is John Paterson, nephew of his, and spent his early life in Exford where his father was manager of the Exford Estate. Notes Tom Collins was born c 1895. He lived on the south side of the Ballarat Road near the intersection of Keilor Road.Historical image of Palmerston Street in Meltonlocal architecture, landscapes of significance -
