Certificate - Certificate - Independent Order of Rechabites, Greta Thomas, c. 1909
The Independent Order of Rechabites began in Salford, England in 1835. The Rechabites were a group named after Rechab, a leader from the old testament in the Bible. He instructed his followers not to drink. The Rechabites were a nomadic group of separatists who did not drink and abstained from other practices associated with the Canaanites. The IOR was a temperance friendly society named after this man.Certificate presented by IOR of Victoria, to Greta Thomas for signing the pledge committing to abstinence from intoxicating liquors. Bert Vivian (1893-1974) was a second generation Portland saddler. His father William had operated a saddlery in Rosebery in the Victorian Mallee before relocating to Portland in the late 19th century. Bert began work as a saddler at W. H. Vivian, at 58-60 Percy Street Portland, continuing in the business after his father’s death in 1928. Portland Higher Elementary School, with an enrolment of 30 students, was established in 1912 as part of the Palmer Street Primary School. Senior education continued on this site until 1945 when Portland High School was finally established with 192 students. By the time new buildings were built in Julia Street in 1957 and ready to move into, there were already 480 students enrolled. Barkly Street is the main road into the business district of Ararat and has developed significantly since this image was taken. The postcard helps define the township in its early stages of colonialisation and reflects on the style of early architecture. The image is a photographic representation of wide streets, assorted businesses and buildings with a bicyclist and horse-drawn carriage in the background. The vantage point seems to be the balcony of Leopolds hotel.
