Eric Roger Webb moved to Mitcham with his family in about 1932. They lived at 443 Mitcham Road and owned all the land up to Simpson Street. The land was a grass paddock and he planted native trees and shrubs around the perimeter. The Webbs has three children: Eric, Dean and Donald. Mr Webb worked in the public service. He was a councillor of the Shire of Blackburn and Mitcham and later of the city of Nunawading between 1940 and 1949. Nicholas Caire was born on Guernsey in the Channel Islands in 1837. He arrived in Adelaide with his parents in about 1860. In 1867, following photographic journeys in Gippsland, he opened a studio in Adelaide. From 1870 to 1876 he lived and worked in Talbot in Central Victoria. In 1876 he purchased T. F. Chuck's studios in the Royal Arcade Melbourne. In 1885, following the introduction of dry plate photography, he began a series of landscape series, which were commercially successful. As a photographer, he travelled extensively through Victoria, photographing places few of his contemporaries had previously seen. He died in 1918. scythe blade, late 19th - early 20th century
Scythes were used to manually mow wheat or grass. Scythes were used with a long sweeping movement which made them much less tiring for labourers to use than reaping hooks or sickles though they still involved great physical labour and considerable skill to perfect. Both hands were in use and the operator did not have to bend his back to reach down to the crop. On farms scythes were sharpened on a sandstone wheel mounted on an axle with a crank handle on one side. This was hand powered and used with water. Scythes were not used as often on farms after the mechanisation of harvesting. They were still used for cutting awkward shaped small plots and for opening a path for the tractors. This item is an example of a tool used by the early settlers of the Orbost district. An iron scythe blade, curved and tapered. A scythe is an agricultural hand tool that cuts grass and is used by making large sweeping motions through the crop. Eventually replaced by horse-drawn or motorised machinery, they are occasionally still used as they are inexpensive and efficient. There are different types of scythes with larger or smaller blades. This particular scythe was manufactured by W.A Tyzack & Co. Ltd. Set up by William Tyzack in the early 1800s in Sheffield, United Kingdom, they grew into a larger manufactory specialising in agricultural tools. Adding the ‘Horseman’ brand to their trademark in 1948, they expanded dramatically and exported throughout the Commonwealth.Donated by Wilfred Dungan on behalf of the Dungan family Collection originally used on the property of the late Dr Rae Dungan in Falls Creek Rd Olinda, purchased in the late 1930s from Olinda pioneers Harry and Minnie Holden. Also on the property of late May Farndon of Farndon’s and Falls Rd Mt Dandenong – aunt of Dr Rae William Dungan and also an early pioneer. Family holidays and weekends involved use of these sorts of farm implements plus working with horses. Post-war, the Olinda hand tools and machinery moved to the Shady Creek, Nilma North area where bush, pasture and cows had replaced the Olinda property. Wilfred well remembers being on one end of the crosscut saws cutting fence posts, logs and timber under “the tireless and vocal instruction” of a red headed local Darnum Rd legend called Harry Collyer. “He drove an old Rugby car and nearly pulled me through the logs with every cut!” Cast steel blade. This particular scythe has a bored hole in the handle, probably for affixing a long wooden handle. Bob Kelly paints landscapes of culturally significant sites along the Mornington Peninsula and depicts these locations as he imagines they originally were before colonisation. Using traditional Western painting techniques, Kelly records the underlying spirit of the Peninsula from a Wathaurong perspective. Chinaman’s Creek in Capel Sound (Rosebud West) was an important watercourse that originally ran from Wonga (Arthur’s Seat) down through Tootgarook Swamp into Port Phillip Bay. It was a great fresh water and food source and home for many Boonwurrung people. Since settlement over 170 years ago, the creek has been drained, blocked, reconstructed and damaged. Kelly depicts a lush green landscape in which the clean creek water winds through the surrounding vegetation of spinifex grasses and gum trees, the background hills are abundant with trees, untouched from man's intervention. Using painstaking detail, Kelly records each blade of grass and ripple on the surface of Chinaman’s Creek. His attention to detail serves to powerfully reimagine this important cultural site, returning it to its former pristine state, and reinvigorating its role as a key place of sustenance for the Indigenous populations of the Peninsula. Frank Wright was a renown resident of Smeaton, where he was born on 2 August 1901. He lived at Laura Villa, and attended Smeaton State School. His father William was a gold miner and his mother's name was Sarah. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and was awarded a gold medal for the highest marks in the ALCM examinations in the British Colonies at the age of seventeen years. He became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was later appointed Musical Director of the London County Council, where he organized many amazing concerts in parks, in and around the London district. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and conducted at the Guildhall of Music and Drama. Frank was often invited to adjudicate Brass Band Championships around Europe, in Australia, including South Street and in New Zealand. The Frank Wright Medal at the Royal South Street competition is awarded to an individual recognized as making an outstanding contribution to brass music in Australia.Black and white photograph of an ornate bandstand built on a grassed area and set high with seven wooden steps leading up to the platform. Under the domed roof, wrought iron lacework extends between the six supporting columns and an ornate, waist-high lacework balustrade encloses the space. The 'Back to Yarra Glen' event was held on the Australia day weekend, 1959. Badge is circular with filigree work around the outer rim. The inner circle has a picture of the Yarra Glen bridge over the light blue river with the dark blue mountains in the background and green river bank in the foreground. There are green trees at each end of the gold bridge. The sky is white. On the green grass foreground is the date 1959. Above the mountains are the words 'Back to Yarra Glen'. The diameter is 2.5 centimetres. It is made of pressed metal, maybe brass, with gold colouring around the outer edge and back. On the front of the badge "Back to Yarra Glen" is across the top and "1959" on the bottom. "Stokes Melb" is on the back -

The painting was bought from Cesare Vagarini by Herr Wennagel for "Weihnachten" 1941 (Christmas) for his wife Johanna (Hanno) Wennagel. It was their first Christmas in the Camp.
