Vision Australia
Photograph - Image, Dickinson Centre opening, 1990
Plaque commemorating the opening of the Dickinson Centre, named in honour of Harold and Mercy Dickinson, both totally blind since childhood, who never let challenges stand in their way. Mercy was the first woman who was blind to obtain a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Queensland, and received her Masters Degree in the Education of Blind People with Additional Handicaps in New York, and an Honorary Doctorate for Education from the University of Queensland in 1994. Mercy and Harold established the Queensland Training and Placement Centre for the Blind, the first establishment of its kind in Queensland. Harold, who was a prolific writer, was appointed the Director and Mercy was the first volunteer at the Centre. Together they gave a lifetime of dedication and commitment ensuring that people who were blind or had low vision had the same opportunities as those with sight. The Centre later merged with other organisations and in 2006 became part of Vision Australia. The second plaque provides a background to how Harold and Mercy met, and their roles in expanding the the opportunities for everyone around them.Rectangular metal plate with inscriptionThe Dickinson Centre This refurbished centre was Officially opened on 9 November 1990 by The Hon. Image 10 Sonia Skipper - Joe Hannan House Commenced 1948 for Professor Max and Jenny Tiesmann Built by Horrie Judd, altered and extended by Sonia Skipper The Alistair Knox Collection The Alistair Knox Collection is a series of mounted enlarged photos of mud brick houses and related subjects. The collection is understood to have been put together by Alistair Knox although it is the work of several unacknowledged photographers. For some years it was held by the Building Department of the former Eltham Shire Council and was then passed to our Society for safekeeping. Some of the photos have been used in Knox's books and from time to time some of them have been part of various historical displays. As far as we know there has not been a public display of the whole collection which numbers about forty photographs. The collection has been copied on to slides for the purpose of this meeting and to be retained as part of the Society's pictorial collection. Alistair Knox 1912 - 1986 is acknowledged as the founder of Eltham's mud brick building movement. Many of the buildings shown in the collection are of his design and he was also involved with the construction of several of them. Others are the work of his contemporaries and associates such as Peter Glass, Gordon Ford, and John Harcourt. Jenny Berry, Chris and Doreen Trinham, Colleen Humphreys, Gavin Phillips The Stokes family settled in this area of Eltham in the 1940s and were associated with the Eltham Christian Church. In the 1970s this church had met in temporary premises in Eltham. Lots of the original 1920s subdivision remained south of Nyora Road and a number of these lots were utilized for the Eltham Christian School, which was established by the Eltham Christian Church in 1981. The school operated on this site until 2000. The premises were owned by the Nillumbik Community Church who were in operation till November 2010 when the Eltham Baptist Church commenced a lease arrangement until the site was purchased by them in April 2012. The building is constructed of brick and timber with a balcony on two sides that looks over an expanse of grass. Poem, Framed, Avis Quarrell, Night at Mersa Matruh, C 2016
This poem references Mersa Matruh, a port town on the Mediterranean coast of Egypt where Tom Meagher of the 14th Battalion may have served. Mersa Matruh was the backdrop for a series of battles between the German and British forces from mid- to late-1942.This poem was written by Avis Quarrell, an active community member of the Warrnambool RSL. Avis Quarrell was a former driver during the Second World War and is well known as a photographer and author in the Warrnambool area. The poem is well provenanced, bearing a dedication from the author herself and has significant interpretive capacity to discuss the North African campaigns, experiences of war and the history of the 14th Battalion when paired with the sketch.Poem printed in black ink on marled biege coloured paper in serif font, centred on page and signed by hand. Frame comprises of black plastic and is suspended by a wire on the reverse, which is screwed in on both the left and right hand sides. Poem is sealed in frame by framing tape, brown in colour. A gold adhesive label in the lower left hand corner indicates the framer and an inscription printed on paper is adhered onto the back of the frame.Underneath poem on front: “Avis Quarrell. C 2016.” On reverse, gold adhesive label reads: “Henna Street Picture Framers/74 Henna Street, Warrnambool/Ph/Fax (03) 5561 4795/ABN 88160473014” Printed inscription on reverse reads: “Warrnambool R.S.L./Please accept this Mersa Matruh sketch and poem/from Avis Quarrell and family (Anne and Murray/ Coverdale, Stephan and Jenny Quarrell, David/ and Janet Quarrell.)/Tom Meagher was a member of the 14th Battalion/in World War 2 and gave this to my husband while/ they were in North Africa./I wrote the poem because of the poignancy it/ created in my heart./We give this on the 100 Anniversary of the/ Warrnambool Sub-Branch, 26th of April, 2016 (16 crossed out and replaced with a 17).”north africa, mersa matruh, 14th battalion, poetry, quarrell, world war two, second world war, tom meagher -

Photograph, Eltham District Horse and Pony Club, First Trail Ride, December 1953, Dec 1953
The Pony Club was a dream of Diana Bassett-Smith, which came true, based on the British Horse Society Pony Club formed in 1929; a worldwide organisation. A meeting was called at ‘Lavender Park’, the home of Mrs Mary Grant and her brother George ‘Mel’ Balfour. Invited to the meeting were Baye Skues, Eric Rundle, Ben Taylor, the Barringtons, Smiths, Lou Lewis and Gwen Cascaden. They all supported Diana Bassett-Smith for forming a Pony Club. The first formal meeting was held at ‘Landscape’, which was the home of the Barringtons and the former home of artist Percy Leason. Negotiations with the Lands Department resulted in the club being granted use of the grounds in Eltham Lower Park for a peppercorn rent. Eltham was the 4th Pony Club in Victoria; the other three being Frankston, Templestowe and Western District. Together they formed the Pony Club Association of Victoria at Diana Bassett-Smith’s instigation. This image shows club members attending their first rally held in the summer school holidays, December 1953 L-R: Andrew Donald, Alex Smith, Jenny McMahon, David Bell, Fay Hardess, Chrissy Mclean, Jane Kimber, Barry Hardess, Sue Heseltine, Sue Donald, Helen Rank, Elizabeth Thomas, Margot Donald, Christine Cuscaden, Diana Lewis, Erif Reseigh, Stephen Harris, Diana Bassett-Smith Black and white photographic reprint with names printed on frontalex smith, andrew donald, barry hardess, chrissy mclean, christine cuscaden, david bell, diana bassett-smith, diana lewis, elizabeth thomas, eltham district horse and pony club, erif reseigh, fay hardess, helen rank, jane kimber, jenny mcmahon, margot donald, stephen harris, sue donald, sue heseltine -

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS, Meena Bazaar for the Jug, Turner Audio Systems. DIRECTED BY, Miichael D. Edwards. DIRECTOR'S NOTE, The sexual power of women is all persuasive. If, as Germaine Greer says, they stopped loving the victors, there would be genuine revolution. The idea of a sex strike to stop a war seems preposterous.... What else is left to the aware but politically emasculated woman? Aristophanes, like us, had been appalled by a pointless and hopeless war. Outrageous indignation had failed to stop it - so he resorted to comic absurdity; perhaps to shame the warmakers. Our version of the play is colloquial and probably ' in vogue'. It is colorful, musical, flippant, and not a little risque. It is, however, based on an awareness of the power of sex roles and the arrogance of a male-dominated society and a profound sense of frustration at the apparently immovable forces that make our wars and enact repression in all its forms."ballarat teachers' college, production, state college of victoria, ballarat, gillies street, liz stubbs, joy dunstan, jenny tait, denise maroney, ann bilston, tina conroy, michael russo, tony ryan, terrence doran, shane quick, sue richards, anne gillies, glenda hamilton, janette marshall, gillian hogan, janine grieg, robyn stanseby, stephanie buchanan, janeen mccillough, wendy gray, elizabeth evans, mary staindl, barbara price, john rowe, jeff moore, stephen schneider, chris slater, peter hassell, errol elbourne, peter orford, keith mcdougall, terrance doran, robbie eastcott, gary oliver, david murphy, alex traianou, kim hatcher, steve albon, austin rickell, stuart tolliday, keith mcivor, bruce miller, ken jones, cheryl brown, ruth newall, michael d. edwards, norman lindsay -
