Henry James Tainton was the son of Joseph Tainton and Mary Jane Course. He married Rose Selina Fankhauser, daughter of Frederick William Fankhauser and Florence French at the East Burwood Methodist Church on the 14th November 1906. James was a gardener aged 26, and Rose 22 (domestic duties) The witnesses were Herbert Simeon Tainton and Mary Ann French. The Tainton and Fankhauser families were both early pioneering families of the East Burwood area. Tait collection: item 39 of 62 This document gives the details of the Will and Probate of Thomas Oakley who died in Warrnambool at the age of 75 in 1893. He had come with his first wife to Australia in 1852 and was a Customs Officer in Warrnambool, in charge of the signals and premises, living in Merri Street. Later after the death of his wife (they had ten children) he married Eliza McKeeman in 1870 and they lived at ‘Oakbank’ near the Warrnambool Cemetery where Oakley pursued farming interests. They had a further eight children, many of them making their mark in the business and community life of Warrnambool and further afield. Thomas Oakley left real estate to the value of £900 and personal estate to the value of £1251, with the beneficiaries being his wife, his daughters, Elizabeth and Mary Anne from his first marriage and the eight children of his second marriage. The lawyers concerned with this document, O’Mahony and Murray, had offices in Warrnambool in Kepler Street at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. This document was in the possession of Ernest Chambers, a Warrnambool lawyer during the same period. It was then passed down to successive lawyers occupying the Kepler Street premises and located there in 2014.This document is of considerable importance as it gives details of the Will and Probate of Thomas Oakley, a prominent and successful landowner in Warrnambool in the 19th century. It will be of great use to researchers. This is a white piece of thick paper folded in two with handwritten material on four sides of the paper. Possibly George Bird (1845-1920) prior to his marriage to Janet Kilpatrick in 1878. However the contextual placement of this photo in the album opposite who is believed to be a young Phillip Shillinglaw in 1865 does not seem to fit though the person does not look like a Shillinglaw male and may well be a family member by marriage. Stewart & Co operated from 217 Bourke St., East from 1871 to 1876 and from 217-219 from 1877 to 1889. Other locations included 42, 284 and 286. Overall, they operated in Melbourne from 1871 through at least 1910 though Carte-de-Visite photos were superseded by 1890. Schuss was advertised as Victoria’s Official Ski Journal It was issued monthly from 1935 to 1961 except during the war when summer issues covered two months. This continued after the war, but it averaged 10 issues annually over its 25 year life. Schuss was published by the Ski Club of Victoria which had a membership of 38 Ski Clubs and demanded to be recognised as the prime authority on skiing in the state. The other 30 ski clubs with 85% of the members disagreed and the politics of skiing became heated. These clubs formed the Federation of Victorian Ski Clubs with their own journal, Ski Horizon. With the establishment of the Victorian Ski Association, Ski-Horizon published its last issue in Nov - Dec. 1955 and the role of the official journal was fully taken over by “Schuss”. This item is significant because it contains stories, images and information documenting the development of the ski facilities at Falls Creek.The journal includes stories and events chronicling developments in Victoria and internationally. The cover features the symbol of the 1960 Winter Olympics and the names of the Australian Team members - Richard (Dick) Walpole, Bill Day, Christine Davy, Peter Brockhoff and Hal Nerdal. In a report on page 57 Dick Walpole reports on the lack of coverage of Olympic Nordic events. On page 69 Fred Griffith gave an update on preparations for the National Championships. This is a framed photograph of a large group of people at a wedding reception in April 1910. The occasion was the marriage of Mary Lee of Wangoom and Patrick O'Keefe, also of Wangoom. The wedding took place at St. Joseph's Church, Warrnambool and the reception was held at the property of St. Mary's at Wangoom which had been held by the Lee family since the late 1850s.Two marquees were erected to cater for over 400 guests and the hospitality included midday dinner, afternoon tea, high tea and supper. The Temperance Band provided the afternoon music. This photograph is of considerable interest, firstly because it depicts a Warrnambool/Wangoom 1910 wedding and secondly because it is an unusual photograph for the time, showing a very large group (perhaps over 400).This is a black and white photograph in a brown wooden patterned frame. Ballarat Teachers' College Principal W.H. Ellwood (1926-31) formed a friendship with Mr C. Ellis when they were teachers at neighbouring Gippsland schools. During the first world war they served in the same regiment. When Mr Ellwood became Principal of the Ballarat Teachers' College in 1926 the original copy of the college anthem, "Extra Muros", bore the words written and composed by Helen Ellis. Mrs. Axie Mazèl - Krammer and her friend Anneke Rappard each had two daughters with them in the Women's camp in Banjoe Biroe. Prior to her marriage Axie Krammer von Marchau had studied languages, literature and pedagogy and particularly the art of teaching through play. The spirit and optimism of these two women contributed to the survival of their 4 little girls. An accomplished artist Mrs. Mazèl created the original of this booklet for the 6th birthday of her friend's daughter Anne Marie on July 30, 1945.The illustrated story of children playing at internment does not hide the reality of their lives but puts in the context of a game of make-believe. The make-believe is illustrated in colour while the harsh reality is recognised in a small black and grey sketch in a corner of each page. Simply produced 30page booklet. It is the printed version of a handwritten booklet produced in July 1945 by Mrs Axie Mazèl Krammer to help her children deal with the memories of their imprisonment by the Japanese in the former Dutch East Indies. The materials and style imitate the simple materials that were available for the author during their 4 years of imprisonment and deprivation. The name "A. This ensemble was not owned by Lady Barbara Grimwade unlike the rest of the garments in this collection. It was donated to the Gallery by Mrs Jessie Briggs after she became aware of the Gallery’s extensive Tu collection. Mrs Briggs (Krongold) wore this ensemble to the marriage of her son, Lionel Krongold, at the Kew Synagogue, Melbourne. To compliment this outfit, Mrs Briggs wore gold shoes and a small Italian gold bag with the gown, a pair of diamond drop earrings, gold chain with diamonds, a gold bracelet with four diamonds and a simple Omega gold watch.

This dress was donated to BHS in 1973 by local teacher Miss Jean Mole (1910-1984). Information provided on donation suggests that it was worn by Jean's mother, Lottie Richmond Bryan (1873-1959), on her marriage to Ernest Mole (1863-1929) in Daylesford on 27 May 1908. However, the style of the dress indicates an earlier date, circa 1878. It is possible that the dress was in fact worn by Jean's grandmother, Jane Crowe McNeil (1850-1933), who married James Bryan (1838-1886) in Daylesford on 9 February 1870.Beige taffeta silk dress with fine black woven stripe. The owner was Rita Fletcher; many locals and relatives inscribed their autographs , drew or painted pictures and , using their best calligraphy, wrote up humorous verses. In addition the book includes news clippings on the sensation of the day, the story “Will you be my woolly aphid?” which tells of a Harcourt youth who put a marriage proposal in a barrel of apples consigned to England. Marriage licence issued to James Bostock and Alicen Aitkin to be executed within a period of 3 months. It has been issued by the Bishop of Melbourne of the United Church of England and Ireland. It is signed by P Teulon Beamish who was arch Deacon in Warrnambool for many years. Three Bostock brothers married three the Aitkin sisters. James was the youngest of the Bostock family as his mother died in childbirth at his delivery. He had a keen interest in horses and worked for both Augustus and John .He died in 1919. Alice died in 1896 at the age of 53.This is one of a number of documents which relate to the Bostock family who were one of the most important pioneering families of the Western District. They owned and leased various properties around Warrnambool and were involved in many aspects of social and business life. Lucy Myra (MS Sparkes) was the wife of Albert Arthur Tacey (1902-1959) who worked in the family butchers business from the time he left school at 14 until 1952. They bought their Sunbury Crescent home at the time of their marriage in 1923 and had 3 surviving children – Elaine Merle, Frank Newman and Donald Arthur. Henry was born in View Street and then Newton Street. He went to Box Hill Grammar School. Before his marriage he lived in Mont Albert Road. Adrian Knowles had started a radio shop at 145 Union Road in the 1940s and Henry joined him later continuing the business in his own name. Henry always had an interest in music and became involved in getting the radio station 3MBS established in Kew. Annie Mary (Mollie) Sibson was the youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs J Sibson of Milwa Gippsland. Mollie held the position of paid nursing sister at Bendigo Hospital until her marriage in 1933 to Eugene Sandner, although Mollie did continue to hold an unpaid position on the Board of Management of the Hospital for many years afterwards. The annual ball would have been a popular event at which men and women could socialise.
