The Warrnambool Woollen Mill was established in South Warrnambool in 1909 and was officially opened in 1910 with John Bennett as the first manager. In 1968 the mill was sold to the Dunlop company and in 1982 Dunlop sold the mill to Onkaparinga Woollen Company. In 1983 Onkaparinga was taken over by Macquarie Worsteds and traded in Warrnambool as Warrnambool Textiles. This arrangement ceased in 1994. In 2000 the mill closed after 90 years of operations.This is not a very significant item but it is interesting as it is connected to one of the major industries operating in Warrnambool for 90 years (1910-2000). It highlights also one aspect of the mill’s history- the years 1983-1994 when the mill operated as Warrnambool Textiles. This is a plastic shopping bag from the Warrnambool Woollen Mill shop. These 4 black and white photos are very clear and are of Bogong in the 1940s when the Kiewa Hydro electric Scheme was being constructed. Bogong was the first construction site. Bogong was a township and construction site for the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme built by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria. These photos in the early 1940s (during WW2) tell the story of fire, flood and living conditions with the inference of transport being horses in 1940 compared with its development in 1944.1. Born in 1903, Norman Penrose studied at the Bendigo School of Mines. A painter and a teacher, he lived in Bendigo most of his life.Watercolour painting by Norman Penrose titled "Bendigo Mining Country." It shows a barren landscape of green shrubs and reddish dirt under a cloudy sky. A single poppet head and a chimney with smoke coming out can be seen on the right hand side with two houses further away. The painting is signed on the bottom left-hand side. It represents a time in in Port Fairy when there were several butchers in the town and competition for customers was fierce. This is one of a pair of paintings by artist Mike McCrea, created when he was in Warrnambool in 1985. The painting was framed and sold by Patana Galleries, Paton Place, Manly Vale, NSW. It was later purchased by athe company of Master Mariners of Australia and who donated the pair to Flagstaff Hill. The pair of paintings are significant for their association with steamships and the Master Mariners of Australia group.
