Framed certificate in honour of Australian Army World War 1 serviceman Private Frederick Alfred Evans, service number 4803 of the 60th Battalion Australian Imperial Force. Evans had enlisted at Carlton, Melbourne, on the 20th July, 1915 and embarked from Melbourne for overseas service with the 5th Battalion on 7th March, 1916. Evans was later killed in action in France on the 19th July, 1916. This is an example of the certificate presented by the City of Fitzroy to local servicemen who had enlisted. The certificate is dated 15 April, 1918, and in this case, the certificate was presented to the deceased serviceman's family. The elaborate certificate is printed, in colour, on a quality card type paper and has a number 375 printed at the bottom left hand corner. These three badges all bear the phrase " For Our Fighting Men" and were sold to raise funds for Australian servicemen's comforts in World War One. The funds would have been used to send food and amenities parcels to those serving overseas, to provide assistance to those soldiers who had returned to Australia or were serving within Australia. The funds from the sale of these badges were directed to the Australian Comforts Fund which was an organisation formed in August 1916 from the amalgamation of the State groups formed to provide assistance to those serving in World War One. These badges are of interest as examples of those made and sold in Australia during World War One to provide comforts for Australian servicemen..1 Circular metal and enamel badge. The front features the Australian flag on a red background surrounded by a white annulus and a pale blue ring with text. There are rust marks on the surface.The reverse has a pin clip. .2 Identical to .1 but very discoloured and faded. .3 Circular metal and enamel badge. The front features a the head and shoulders of an Australian soldier in uniform with a slouch hat and a gun with bayonet fixed against a background of the Australian flag. The Garden of the Grieving Mother is an acknowledgement of the trauma, grief and anxiety felt by the families of Australian servicemen and women. Of the 3,801 WWI service men and women commemorated in the Ballarat Avenue of Honour, 1 in 5 made the ultimate sacrifice, giving their lives. At the centre of the memorial space is a bronze sculpture of a mother clutching a photograph of her son by sculptor Peter Corlett who has created many war memorial public artworks. Photo taken of eager Junior Legatee’s on their arrival at Lord Somers Camp. The date is unknown. Summer camps were conducted at Somers Camp, Somers, Victoria, for many years for the children of deceased ex-servicemen. The camps started back in the early days of Legacy when the founder of Legacy, Stan Savige, had a beach side property in Balnarring (Palm Beach, Somers) that he allowed to be used for summer camps and outings by Legacy. Initially there were outings and picnics. In the 1930s permanent camp buildings were erected. There was an official handover of a long leasehold to Legacy and formal documents are in the archive.A record of the camps run by Melbourne Legacy for the children. The WWI Death Plaque (Dead Man's Penny) was issued to the next of kin of servicemen/women who had fallen in the Great War between 1914 and 1918.This plaque was given to honour the service of Ballarat College old collegian Harry Spencer Holgate who entered the school in 1894. On leaving school he became an auctioneer at Muswellbrook and Scone. He enlisted on 24 May 1916 and was awarded the Military Medal at Polygon Wood in September 1917. He was killed at Zonnebeke on 11 October 1917. His brother Edward Spencer Holgate was also killed while serving his country during World War 1. Of the 305 Ballarat College old collegians who enlisted in WW1 65 gave their lives for their country. This 'death penny' is representative of the incredible sacrifice given by this huge percentage of the school's community. Round disk cast in bronze gunmetal, which incorporates the following; an image of Britannia holding an oak spray with leaves and acorns, an imperial lion, two dolphins representing Britain's sea power, the emblem of Imperial Germany's eagle being torn to pieces by another lion. The medallion is packaged in a heavy card envelope.Inscribed around face of medallion: He died for freedom and honour. This file contains two items pertaining to the history of the Caulfield RSL: 1/A newspaper clipping (source unknown, undated) announcing the RSL’s intention to release a history on its 90th anniversary, and its request for residents of Caulfield to provide any information they might possess about former servicemen for purposes of compiling it. There were 7 camps in the area during World War II which held about 4,000-8,000 people at any one time. 3 camps housed Prisoners Of War who were enemy servicemen captured in various theatres of war around the world and transported to Australia for the duration of the war. The remaining 4 camps held Internees who were civilians living in Australia or other Allied territories and countries at the outbreak of war and were deemed to be a security risk because of their nationality. The Great Ocean Road may be the only road in the world which was built as a war memorial. In 1916, much of Australia was poorly served by roads, and it was suggested that returning servicemen could be given worthwhile employment by building roads in isolated areas. The plan was taken up for the Great Ocean Road, and work was dedicated to the memory of men who had fallen in World War 1. The road itself is a great feat of engineering. It wind around some of Australia's most rugged coastline. Used by RAAF personell in accommodation quarters 1942 -1946. WWII wartime objects – living in the RAAF camp . They provide evidence of the contents of the RAAF barracks and recreation hut erected in 1942 and occupied until 1945. Some of the items such as cutlery, a wood heater/stove, domestic radio (remnants) were used in daily life by servicemen. Spoons x 3 (WPLS 0101.3; likely provenance); spoon and knife (0148.2 likely provenance)The two metal small spoons, two large spoons and knife without its handle are known to have been used by WWII RAAF or navy personnel in their accommodation quarters 1942-1945. The items, if original to the site, have second level contributory significance for the evidence they provide of the WWII buildings and their use between 1942 and 1945. Colour slide taken at Blamey House when it was in Balcombe Road, Beaumaris. The house and grounds were purchased for Legacy with a generous donation from the trustees of Blamey House Hostel (accommodation provided for servicemen in World War 2) after the hostel was closed. It was used by Legacy to provide home for young children in need. The boys classes and others appear to have used the pool at times. Was with many other slides taken in the 1950s and 1960s. The slides have been photographed to make digital images and moved to archive quality sleeves. Mr Maurice Ashkanasy, President of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry is addressing the gathering. Melbourne Legacy ran three residences: Blamey House (purchased 1947) , Stanhope (purchased 1945) and Harelands (purchased 1950), to take care of children whose fathers were deceased servicemen, and who may have been left orphans, or whose mother may have been unable to care for them herself. The children were cared for until they were old enough to become independent. Photocopy of an article written by Ian Anderson (past president of Melbourne Legacy) for the Victorian Historical Magazine, 149th issue, August 1967, which was taken from his address to the Society on Tuesday 23 May 1967. It describes the founding of Legacy and the role of founding legatees. It summarises the work Legacy was doing with finding work for returned servicemen, and then focusing more on looking after the needs of war widows and their children. The magazine is available at the State Library of Victoria, Melbourne, but has not yet been digitised to read on line. In 1915, recruitment committees were formed in nearly every town in Australia to facilitate enlistment in the Australian Imperial Forces. These committees focused on raising awareness, mobilizing communities, and making enlistment processes accessible. The Wodonga Recruiting Committee also worked with volunteers for the Soldiers’ Comfort Fund to raise money and collect items to send to servicemen on the Front to supplement their rations packages. These included articles such as gum, tobacco, soap, towels and cigarettes. This programme documents one of the events organised in Wodonga by the local Recruiting Committee in 1917. It lists the names of 137 soldiers and nurses from Wodonga who had enlisted up until September 1917. This item is significance because it documents the response to World War One by members of the Wodonga community.A small fold out card featuring the flags of the nations who were Allies with Australia at this time. The Traralgon War Memorial was originally erected in memory of the fallen soldiers of World War One. The Gippsland Times of 01 March 1923."On Sunday a memorial that has been erected in memory of the fallen soldiers of the district was unveiled. The ceremony was performed by Mr G. H.Wise, and addresses were delivered by Mr W West, M.LA. the president of the shire and local clergymen. The memorial, which cost £700, and contains 54 names of young men who made the supreme sacrifice is a lifesized figure of an Australian soldier and is made white Italian marble. It now commemorates Australian servicemen and women who have served in all wars and conflicts. Very historical significance. Robert was part of a group of 500 Servicemen captured as P.O.Ws.at Padang Sumatra. The POWs were accommodated in 6 long barracks buildings that ran side by side. They were behind an 8 foot high wall containing a parade ground, sports ground, Japanese Officers and guards quarters. The POWs were put to work on the infamous Sumatra Railway. Permanent camp buildings were built and with an association with Lord Somers (Governor of Victoria) it was called Somers Camp. The camps gave the children an opportunity of a summer beach holiday with other Legacy children. Melbourne LegacyCertificate, Junior Legacy Melbourne, 1955
A membership certificate for Derithe Ames, a junior legatee in 1955. The text says 'During War many men offer themselves for Service in the Forces of the Empire. It is the obligation of Legacy to assist the children of those who fell, or who have since died. Junior Legatee was the term used for the children of deceased servicemen that Legacy took into their care. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and eurythmics. Their skills were showcased in the Annual Demonstration. The certificate shows there were prizes and recognition for achievements.
