Minutes of meetings of Eight Hour Anniversary Committee, 11 November 1892-27 January 1916
The establishment of the 8hours day by the Operative Stone Masons in 1856 gave an impetus to the Trade Union Movement in the colony and the slogan “8hrs Work 8hrs Rest 8hrs Recreation” became established fact for the first time in the world. This event was rightly regarded as worthy of celebration and 8hr anniversary committees were formed throughout Victoria. In 1883, the Ballarat Eight Hours Anniversary Committee was renamed Ballarat Regional Trades and Labour Council.The minutes are a core historical source of information from the inception of Eight Hours Anniversary Committee, subsequently known as Ballarat Trades and Labour Council. They represent the history of unionism in the Ballarat region. The minutes include items relating to industrial campaigns, social justice and are of political significance to the region. This pin was created by Miss Annie Emily Gardner to raise relief money to support industrial unrest in Newcastle. It was reported in the Newcastle Morning Herald that Miss Gardner was vice-president of the Women's Organising Committee of the Political Labour League. A copy of an advertisement for the pin has been uploaded here. Price of the silver pin was 2/- and gold 15/6. Photograph of the pin - to come. Donated to Ballarat Trades Hall by John Mildren. Photograph: John Cain and Norm Borchers John Cain served in Victorian State Parliament from 1976 – 1992. He was Premier from 1982-1990. The photo is taken after his time as Premier. Norm Borchers was a long-term trade unionist (Amalgamated Engineering Union and the Australian Railways Union) and ALP member; he lived and worked in Ballarat. Norm was active in workplace disputes during the ALP split in 1955.Photograph: John Cain and Norm Borchers. John Cain was the 41st Premier of Victoria from 1982-1990. The photo is taken after he became Premier. Norm Borchers passed away in 2008. Borchers was a Club President of the Sebastopol Lions Club (1975-76). He worked for the railways as an engineering employee and was long-term trade unionist (Amalgamated Engineering Union and the Australian Railways Union) and ALP member; he lived and worked in the Ballarat area. Norm was active in workplace disputes during the ALP split in 1955. Newspaper cutting, July 19, 1968 from Bendigo Advertiser about the State Government decision the previous day to replace the tram services in Bendigo and Ballarat. Government accepted the Transport Regulation Board report. Notes the SEC, the Minister of Transport - Mr. Wilcox and that services were expected to close down by the New Year. Also has item on "Comments on the Tram Decision" by the Mayor, Trades Hall Council President Mr. S. Anderson and Manger of the SEC Northern Branch, Mr. A.C. Sandow. Newspaper clipping from The Sun (?), undated, late 1970? about Parliament (Victorian) being told by the Minister for Fuel and Power (Mr. Balfour) that the City of Ballarat wanted to scrap its trams, following a question from Mr. Trezise (ALP Geelong North) in the Legislative Assembly. No decision had yet been made. Also quotes the Secretary of the Ballarat Trades and Labor Council, Mr. A.C. Williams saying that Ballarat people would protest this decision. On rear of cutting has an item about the Noongah Enquiry, an inquiry into the sinking of the Noongah. Mark Spargo had outstanding results from trade school. He completed his modules with 23 credits out od a possible 24. In two of his elective modules he scored 100 percent and his overall acerage mark over three years was 87.5 percent. However, it was not the results alone remarkable as they are - he managed to motivate and maintain the enthusiasm of both his teachers and the rest of the class during the three years. The Western Region Gampians Apprenticeship Scheme runs an annual award for the top apprentice. Mark Spargo Receiving an Award for Outstanding Trade School Results in 1988.
