The green holder for the weights was hand made by cutting recesses out of a single piece of wood. The wood was painted green. Between 1960 and 1988 Australia gradually adopted the SI units (Standard International) or metric units. In 1970 the Australian parliament passed the metric conversion act, and the Australian building trades made it the standard in 1974. This information helps to date the set of weights to C. 1970s.These weights have local and social significance to indicate the weights used in many homes or small businesses in the 1970s.Set of 5 small metric weights in wooden holder. This pin was created by Miss Annie Emily Gardner to raise relief money to support industrial unrest in Newcastle. It was reported in the Newcastle Morning Herald that Miss Gardner was vice-president of the Women's Organising Committee of the Political Labour League. Newspaper clipping from The Sun (?), undated, late 1970? about Parliament (Victorian) being told by the Minister for Fuel and Power (Mr. Balfour) that the City of Ballarat wanted to scrap its trams, following a question from Mr. Trezise (ALP Geelong North) in the Legislative Assembly. No decision had yet been made. Also quotes the Secretary of the Ballarat Trades and Labor Council, Mr. A.C. Williams saying that Ballarat people would protest this decision.
