Photograph - Colour Print, Eltham Shire Council, Council oerations road grading and gravel water truck, c.1990
The cost of providing equivalent levels of services to the more rural areas of the Shire with respect to those in the more urban areas of Eltham, Montmorency and Briar Hill was relatively expensive. Road maintenance of rural unsealed gravel roads is one of those areas of higher costs particulary as a result of water erosion. The same applies for Nillumbik Shire Council today. Here we see Council operations grading a road and laying new gravel, followed by a gravel water truck to help bed the surface down. Unfortunately there is no information with these prints as to where this particular location is.graders, infrastructure, road maintenance, roads, shire of eltham, rural road, unidentified -

Churchill Island Heritage Farm
Functional object - Furphy Water Cart, 1929
The family-owned Furphy company has been manufacturing agricultural equipment in Kyneton and then Shepparton in Victoria from the 1860s to the present day. In the late 1800s the company developed the Furphy Water Cart to help farmers transport water to and from and around their properties - especially in time of drought. At the beginning of World War One, the carts were used to distribute water amongst the thousands of soldiers completing their basic training at Broadmeadows. They were also used for the same purpose in the camps and battlefields overseas. As the soldiers gathered around the water carts they would often chat, share information and gossip amongst themselves. These practices resulted in the term Furphy evolving in to the Australian vernacular as meaning a statement or fact that isn’t quite true or a little bit dubious.Furphy water cart, unpainted with traces of red on embossed endOn side of tank in black paint "CHURCHILL ISLAND" Embossed on end: Furphy water cart; makers Furphy & Sons, Shepparton and other inscriptions.farm machinery, water, furphy cart, horse drawn, furphy, churchill island, shepparton, kyneton -

Tools, Chain pipe wrench c1900, c1900
The heavy duty chain wrench has a double jaw that gives fast, ratchet-like action in either direction The "cable chain" is preferable for working with fittings and other irregular forms related to pipe where flat chain is better suited for pipe. The side plates connect to the handle with dovetails; the bolt's primary function is to keep the jaws in position rather than carrying the strain. The free end of the chain connects to the handle behind the attachment point for the fixed end of the chain to avoid potential for the chain to "lock" on pipe. This chain pipe wrench is typical of the type used by early settlers in Moorabbin Shire c1900Heavy steel chain pipe wrench c1900wrenches, spanners, chain pipe wrench, early settlers, market gardeners, blacksmiths, tools, building equipment, hammers, moorabbin shire, bentleigh, mckinnon, highett, cheltenham, mcewan james pty ltd, melbourne, bunnings pty ltd, -

Sugarloaf Reservoir is situated on former farmland. This large water storage was completed in 1982 and serves Melbourne's northern suburbs. Within the visitor areas are two picnic grounds and other recreational facilities. Below its massive rock embankment is located the Winnecke Treatment Plan designed to purify its water before being piped into Melbourne. The dam partly inundated the old firing ranges of the former Christmas Hills Rifle Club. Source: Christmas Hills Now and then: Yarra Glen & District Historical Society, 2004. Born DigitalMelbourne Water Sugarload reservoir Melboure Water is owned by the Victorian Government. We manage Melbourne's water supply catchments, remove and treat most of Melbourne's sewrage, and manage waterways and major drainage systems. Most of Melbourne's water comes from uninhabited, forested catchments. Melbourne is one of the few cities in the world that has protecyed water supply catchments. Melbourne Water manages these catchments to protect our drinking water. Our water is safe and pleasant to drink, and undergoes minimal treatment - it is better to start witht he highest quality source. A key part of Melbourne Water's responsibility is to encourage the sustainable use of this precious resource.
