Photographed in 1872 by William PATERSON as one of a series for the Melbourne Exhibition of 1873; original mount hanging in Engineering Department at Port Melbourne Town Hall at 19-9-1994 but now in Port Phillip,City Collection. This set of original prints belonged to Town Clerk Syd ANDERSON, then to his daughter-in-law Phyllis ANDERSON (donor). Accompanied by list of captions, both hand written and typed (the latter a partial listing).View southeast in Bay Street from roof of building on north west corner of Bay and Liardet Streets c1871. Notes the 1934-37 rehabilitation was palliative in nature, and now must be "in to stay" or "eliminated". Melbourne costs given, the cheapest form adopted, Ballarat cost about 1million pounds and Bendigo 600,000. New cars imported about 20,000 each. Total cost based on 40 cars, about 2.5m pounds. Sheet aluminium sign, red metal primer on rear of, off white painted on front, with red and black painted with this sheet steel(?) attachments, riveted to aluminium and folded so that a sheet of paper or prepared numbers could be slipped in. Used to indicate cash shortages of Conductors for the last week and lowest week for the year. $ sign in block paint, otherwise in red paint. Appears to have been set up for decimal currency.
