A temporary artwork by Lead On Ballarat was installed in a carpark at the Ballarat Library from 2013-2020. Art Streetz Murals was an initiative of Lead On Ballarat’s, “Take Back the Streets” art program and the City of Ballarat. The project was funded under the Graffiti Prevention and Removal Grants, part of the Victorian Government’s Community Crime Prevention Program. The aim of the project was for the young people involved to develop their skills, ideas and designs with assistance from the ‘Lead Artist’ Pauline O'Shannessy-Dowling. The artwork was created through a number of workshops, planning and design sessions. Whilst female residents were not permitted at International House until 1972, the House hosted several formal events with invited guests, such as Dinner Dances held in April and July of 1960. Pictured here, Andrew Deacon was an Arts student and the first co-editor of the student magazine, Satadal, in 1959, and initiated International House's 'Waste Paper Basket Club', at which tutors and guests presented papers on global affairs. The regiment trained in newly arrived M3 General Grant tanks at Puckapunyal before moving north to Singleton, then the Wee Waa plains. The regiment sailed for New Guinea in April 1943 and carried out mobile defence to airfields at Port Moresby, Milne Bay, Dobadura and Popondetta. The regiment returned to Australia in February 1944 and disbanded as an armoured regiment and retrained as Nos 41, 42 and 43 Landing Craft Companies. The Melbourne Harbour Trust Commission purchased the steam dredge SIR WILLIAM MATHEWS on 10 October 1941 from the Western Australian Government. Although the dredge was described as a suction dredge it was in fact a bucket dredge. After an overhaul, the vessel was renamed the GEORGE KERMODE and commenced operation in Victorian waters on 22 June 1942. The vessel was hired out to the Port of Burnie in 1945-46 but continued in the ownership of the Trust until 1 April 1976 when it was scuttled by the Department of Conservation, Forests and Lands as part of their artificial reef program. The 2/8th Armoured Regiment was raised in June 1941 under the command of Lieutenant Colonel W G Hopkins with officers and men selected from the wider AIF in Victoria. The regiment trained in newly arrived M3 General Grant tanks at Puckapunyal before moving north to Singleton, then the Wee Waa plains. The regiment sailed for New Guinea in April 1943 and carried out mobile defence to airfields at Port Moresby, Milne Bay, Dobadura and Popondetta.
