Postcard, River Yarra, Kew, 1905-1914
The Kew Historical Society's postcard collection includes views of Kew, Melbourne and Greater Melbourne as well as those including overseas scenes sent or received from Europe or the Middle East. They date from the 1890s to the 2000s. These postcards may or may not include the name of the publisher or printer. A number of the cards were published as parts of popular series. A way of dating early postcards is to identify whether the reverse was divided by a central line which became the norm after 1902 in the United Kingdom. However, other postcards produced after this date do not always conform to this print layout. One of a series of pictorial postcards showing a woman on a bicycle near to the River Yarra in Kew.Polychrome postcard of the River Yarra at Kew, showing a woman with a bike (right) looking away from the River. My dear friend I suppose you will think I am a "beauty", but I have no excuse to offer for not writing, only the longer I put it off the longer I want to. I hope the change did you a lot of good & that you feel quite well & strong. Everything here is something about the same. Our two new ministers are nice but I like Mr Dowsing better so far. The weather lately is glorious, just the thing for long walks. Jane Rowe & I go for a walk after church on Sunday nights. That is the most walking I do lately. No room for more. There is no information with this item. "The Pyramids", was named due to huge rocks that jut out from the hill, being shaped similarly to the Egyptian Pyramids. " Where the Murrindal River winds between high limestone bluffs before disappearing into a mountainside and becoming an underground river, four miles north-east of Buchan, is the region known as The Pyramids. It is an area of limestone caverns and sink holes overshadowed by three rock stacks. Some of the caves are the last resting places of long dead Murrindal animals." The Woodridge Estate was a major residential subdivision that was developed in many stages in the 1970s and 80s. It extended easterly from the older residential area of Eltham into what had previously been largely privately owned bushland. The subdivision design took into account the steep topography and resulted in large blocks that enabled preservation of much of the tree cover. It included a number of small parks and walkways and the one kilometre long Woodridge Linear Park. A bushland area left as a proposed school site later became the Pauline Toner Butterfly Reserve for preservation of the rare Eltham Copper Butterfly. This walk explores some Woodridge streets as well as the linear park and butterfly reserve, a hilly walk of about 3 km and includes some moderately rough tracks. Permission to visit the external grounds of two private properties to view heritage listed houses not visible from the street was granted. The walk commenced at 2pm at the access to Woodridge Linear Park in Grove Street just east of the Eltham East Primary School (Melway ref 22 B4). This free walk was open to the general public as well as Society members. Whilst COVID restrictions did not require the wearing of masks in the open, masks had to be carried and all attendees registered with name and contct number.Born Digital (41 images)covid-19, eltham, eltham district historical society, heritage excursion, woodridge estate -

Newsletter No. 216, May 2014 May Excursion – The 1901 Eltham Railway Walk The railway from Heidelberg to Eltham was opened in 1902. Over the previous year railway construction cut a curving swathe through Josiah Holloway’s 1851 Little Eltham subdivision. The survey plans for the railway show the owners and occupiers of land within Little Eltham affected by the railway alignment and for some distance each side. The plans show houses and other buildings but development at that time was rather sparse. Copies of these plans from the State Library of Victoria collection have been provided to the Society by Alan Sheehan. For our walk on 3rd May we intend to follow the railway from the Eltham Station to Ryans Road, which was the boundary of the adjoining Montmorency Farm. The return will be by way of nearby streets. Along the way we will discuss the details shown on the railway plans as well as more recent railway documents and photographs. At the conclusion and if time permits we can inspect the historical display at the Eltham Station. The walk is about 3 km in length and will take about 2.5 hours. It will start at 2 pm at the Eltham Railway Station car park (east/Main Road side) (Melway Ref. 21 J5).Born Digitalheritage excursion, activities, eltham district historical society, eltham railway station, eltham library, trestle bridge -
