Notes cable trams, conversion, sale of trailers and dummies or grip cars, the variety taken over from the trusts, design of new cars (180 in service at the time of the report), open cars vs closed cars, seating and standing capacity, speed, braking system, step heights, destination signs, lifeguards. Gives a description of Preston Workshops, finishing soon, description of the tramcar construction, roofing, painting, sourcing of materials, timbers, cost per tram of 3250 pounds, depots, breakdowns, overhauls, workshops, collision repairs in 1925, construction of 10 safety cars. Postcard - black and white reproduction of a wall poster used by the Box Hill - Doncaster Tramway, includes sketch of Doncaster Tower, one of the tram cars and timetable. See Reg Item 699 and 198. Printed for the State Library of Victoria, by John Sands - Number PC11. Divided back, caption, printing information and bar code where a stamp would go. Robert Green advised by email 20-1-2018: "The tram in Russell Street was unveiled by the Premier, R J Hamer, on 1 May 1975. The ceremony was attended by F R Kirby, the Chairman of the M&MTB, and the Chairman (Judge Leckie) and Director (R H Fowler) of the Science Museum of Victoria." Negative (120) of the intersection of Moreland Road and Sydney Road, Brunswick, during the 1920's. In the view is a cable tram set shunting. A tramway employee and two boys at the front of the grip car seem to be manipulating something. Saloon car is No. 183 with the conductor pushing the car. The grip car has the destination of Brunswick and the saloon Flinders St? Note the two steel tramway poles and overhead for the North Coburg electric tram service from Moreland Rod into Sydney Road. In the background is the Moreland Hotel, Clarkson chemist and the Commercial Bank of Australia. An low resolution A4 laminated was received with the negatives. Black and white photograph of a lightly loaded cable car set, trailer 415, eastbound in Bourke St, nearing Russell St. Set has destination of Nicholson St. The Conductor and Gripman are both on the grip car - "gossiping". In the background are signs for Sharpe's store, Parers Hotel, Lewis's and Normans. On the underside of the photograph written in black ink "Cable Tram in Bourke St Jan 1937" Noelle Jones - 24/5/2021 It is no later than 1946, as Maples purchased the Love & Lewis business (194-6 Bourke St) in that year (the business was being sold by the executors of the owner). Note also that Parer's (not Parkers) Hotel, at 200 Bourke Street, was established in the 1880s by the Parer Brothers, originally from Spain. The most famous member of the family was Damien Parer, the WWII photographer. The building was demolished in 1960, and is the site of the Midcity Arcade. Sharpes bought the property on the left (202-4 Bourke St) in 1954, after being tenants for 20 years. Photograph - Black and White - demolishing cable tram track Smith St and Queens Parade 1954/55
The photograph shows the demolition or removal of the cable tram track at the intersection of Smith St Gertrude St. Fitzroy. The workmen are excavating the former cable tram track The inbound cable tram track remains in position. The 1955 Annual Report notes that work commenced following the completion of the Queen's visit in March 1954 and that all work was done by day-labour. The track was opened to service in late June 1955. The second image is from a Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works plan (part) No. 1217 - Collingwood for the intersection, obtained for reference from the State Library of Victoria Collection of MMBW Plans. It shows the layout of the cables and the large sheave pit that the cable itself passed around. The trams were required to drop the cable from the grip prior to the entry to the curve and then coast around. Both are young men. The conductor is adorned with his safety pins and trip slips, that he would punch a hole in when he sold or collected a fare. The bell punch in the conductor's right hand would sound a bell to indicate the fare had been collected. There is a church vicarage in the background - at Prahran terminus in Chapel Street outside Trinity church. Underneath the photo is written "A Paradox: two Badger ?" which is a reference to the General Strike in Brisbane of Jan 1912 by Brisbane Tramway Company workers over the wearing of Union badges which was strongly opposed by the Company Manager Joesph 'Boss' Badger. See also item 7485 for a similar-themed photograph about the Badger.
