Melbourne Legacy
Furniture, Table and Chairs, Not known, believed to be during the 1920's
The table and chairs once belonged to the Officers' Mess, 24th Battalion. From 1928 - 1936 the CO 24th Battallion was Lt Col S.G. Savige, DSO MC. It was during this time that the chairs were made and used for dining-in nights. During the a ceremony of remembrance, each officer stood behind his chair and called the name on its back as a mark of respect for those KIA during WW1. At the inaugural meeting of the Club, from which arose Melbourne Legacy in September 1923, eight of the fourteen members had worn the colour patch of 24th Battalion. The connection to Savige and the fact that many of his officers from 24th Battalion became members of Melbourne Legacy. This table and its chairs were formally gifted to Melbourne Legacy on 9th May 1956 when the Club moved to Legacy House. They have been used since in the Club's Board Room, now located on level 1, Legacy House, 293 Swanston Street, Melbourne. Two Legatees were responsible for fully refurbishing the table and chairs - Legatee Gordon Beith (Morrabbin Branch) and Legatee Ted McKenzie (Footscray/Sunshine Branch) Board Room Table - Clear varnished timber table with a two piece glass top Table legs are turned timber on wheels x 5. Print, Cr Henry Weedon MLA, & Suburban Mayors, 1907
An article in the Box Hill 'Reporter' (11 October 1907, p.2) refers to the presentation of the artefact to the Kew Town Hall. The report records: 'Presentation to Kew's Ex-Mayor In the mayor's room at Kew on Tuesday evening, Ex-Mayor Cr Wishart was made the recipient of a handsomely-illuminated and exquisitely-framed testimonial as a mark of appreciation by his colleagues of the highly satisfactory manner in which he had discharged the duties appertaining to the mayoral office. .... A framed group of the metropolitan mayors was subsequently presented by Cr Wishart as an addition to the pictures hung in the mayor's room.'The newspaper report in the Box Hill Reporter positively identifies the artefact and how it was placed in the Mayor's Room in the Walpole Street Town Hall. The collage is historically significant as it may include the only photograph of a mayor of a city at this period of time.A large framed photographic collage of Henry Weedon surrounded by the Mayors of Greater Melbourne (holding office for the year 1906-07). The photograph was assembled in recognition of the ‘slight favours to them’ showed by the Lord Mayor. The photograph is dated August 1907. City of Warrnambool Rowing Club
Plaque, 07 08 2016
The City of Warrnambool Rowing Club (CoWRC) received a grant from the Warrnambool City Council Community Development Fund for the project: to hold a public event to install a plaque – dedicated to members and ex members who enlisted in WW1. The original honor roll had been lost to history. The date chosen was August 7 as this was 100 years since the death of a particular member, Major Thomas (Tom) Redford. Process: the Club wrote a book about its 140 year history and learnt of the honor roll. Every effort to find it was exhausted. The Club applied for funds to produce a replacement plaque and have a public event to unveil it. Outcome: There is now a permanent plaque in the rowing ‘prescient’ on the Hopkins River. one meter high stone with brass plaque‘Lest we Forget’ Honour Roll of Warrnambool Rowing Club Members and ex-Members who enlisted for the First World War. Photograph, Fred Lyons taxi decorated for Empire Day, 1930s
Lyons family history: From 1907 a cab service operated from near the railway gates in Union Road. It was established and maintained by Mr C Fraser until c1916. George Rea either took over then or set up in opposition. Fred Lyons initially worked for George until he set up his own business. In time he changed over to a motor vehicle and continued his service until 1960. Frederick Adolphus Lyons (1891-1980) was born in Surrey Hills, son of Thomas and Catherine Lyons. He married Elizabeth Ruby Hall in 1918. They lived just around the corner at 55 Sunbury Crescent. The Lyons’ home in Sunbury Crescent was called ‘Knopshambury’ - this was probably a misspelling of Knockshanbally in Co Kilkenny, the birth place of Fred’s father, Thomas Edmund Josias Lyons (1846-1915). Arthur Lyons was born in Surrey Hills on 12 Jun 1920. He became a motor mechanic / welder and lived at 55 Sunbury Crescent. Empire Day celebrations were held in Surrey Hills from 1906-1911 and revitalised from 1933-1938 by the Surrey Hills Progress Association. Street parades featuring decorated business vehicles and bonfires were a feature. The children are identified as (L to R) Julian Ethinney, Geoff Ethinney - from Sydney, Joyce Harris, Ken Moritz, Scoppy (the dog), Keith Harris, Ivan Moritz. This is one of a series of photos donated by Arthur Lyons. The donation was made while he was in hospital. He died shortly afterwards (23 Sep 1990). Donation was finalised by a neighbour, Mrs Florence Ann Armitstead, wife of Glen Victor Armitstead. Glen was a local hairdresser. They moved to 11 Sunbury Crescent after their marriage in 1939. Arthur had no relatives to distribute the material to.Black and white photo of Fred Lyons taxi decorated for Empire Day celebrations in the 1930s with paper flowers.
