The first newsletter of the Society was issued May 1978 and has been published continuously ever since on a bi-monthly basis. With the cessation of the Shire of Eltham in late 1994, the Society's name was revised to Eltham District Historical Society and this name first appeared with issue No. 103, July 1995. A number of houses were built within the Sunbury Asylum grounds to house administrators and staff, and their families, who worked at the asylum. After the asylum was closed down and the main asylum buildings were taken over by Victoria University, the surrounding land was developed for housing by the Urban Land Authority, the administrators houses were demolished.A black and white photograph of two bungalow style houses built along a formed but unsurfaced road. This is a dish sold to tourists visiting Warrnambool in the 1920s as a souvenir of Warrnambool and the Hopkins River. It was made by the Royal Stafford Bone China Company which was founded in the mid 1800s and based in Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire, England. The scene depicting the Hopkins River mouth shows the Lyndoch windmill, the Lyndoch bungalow built in the early 1920s by Florence Lake, Proudfoots Boathouse and the Rowing Club building. This dish is an interesting example of the high-quality souvenirs sold to tourists in the mid 1920s. Local Warrnambool residents may also have purchased an item such as this. Souvenir items depicting local scenes are still sold today in most places in Australia.This is a square-shaped white china dish with a fluted edge and gold colouring on the edge of the fluting. In the centre of the dish is a black and white image of the mouth of the Hopkins River near its mouth. This property has be listed as having sold for $370,500 in 2002. Made by using Rotring ‘Rapidigraph’ drafting pens with Rotring ink on Rapidigraph polyester drafting film, double matte. Trained as a cartographic draftsman within the mining industry, Margaret Picken is an artist who worked producing property illustrations for real estate agencies in eastern suburbs of Victoria from 1983-2005. The donor George Lister Coop was about 21 years of age when he took this photo in 1958 from the Coop family home at 688 Whitehorse Road. Ralph Walton, a bricklayer, and his wife Maria lived at 690 Whitehorse Road from c1931 (when it was numbered 447) until their deaths. Maria died in 1944 aged 77 years and Ralph died in 1959 aged 85 years. The Kew Historical Society's map collection includes a substantial number of real estate subdivision plans, mainly of Kew but also of surrounding suburbs in Melbourne. Most of the subdivision plans date from the 1920s and 1930s when the districts old homes and local farmland were being split up to accommodate residential growth in the postwar period. These early plans were assembled by a local firm, Jas R Mather & McMillan, which had an office in Cotham Road. Many of the plans, and sometimes photos, were annotated by the agents.Subdivision plans are historically important documents used as evidence for the growth of suburbs in Australia. They frequently provide information about when the land was sold as well as evidence relating to surveyors and real estate and financial agents. The numerous subdivision plans in the Kew Historical Society's collection represent working documents, ranging from the initial sketches made in planning a subdivision to printed plans on which auctioneers or agents listed the prices for which individual lots were sold. In a number of cases, the reverse of a subdivision plan in the collection includes a photograph of a house that was also for sale by the agent. These photographs provide significant heritage information relating house design and decoration, fencing and household gardens.The photograph may also be aesthetically significant depending o the importance of the photographic atelier.Real estate photograph for a local agent by the Kew photographer, Josiah Earl Barnes. The photo is of a weatherboard or brick rendered bungalow with a twisted wire fence. Given Barnes' status a a Kew photographer, the house is probably locate din Kew or East Kew. Unfortunately the handwritten information on the mount bordering the photo is damaged and cannot be read. The bungalow has a gabled, tiled roof with terra cotta finials at the front of both gables. The house has a central doorway, framed by a pseudo portico supported by four wooden columns. On each side of the doorway, at the front, there are paired sash windows, which, like the half-timbered gable, are picked out in a darker colour.Handwritten, mostly illegible description by selling agent on mount surround: " .... in Diningroom, Drawing Rooms, ... This architectural drawing is one of a series created by Margaret Picken for a number of real estate agents in Melbourne between 1983 and 2005. This is the home of Ernest Lance Young and Beryl Mair and the childhood home of their children Barbara, Ken and Laurie. Lance was born 24 March 1915 in Surrey Hills, the son of Ernest Augustus Young and Ruby Nichell Whitty. He married Beryl Mair in 1939 and died on 5 October 1999 at Mont Albert. Electoral rolls list him as a manufacturer. His address after marriage was 11 York Street, Mont Albert. He is buried in Box Hill Cemetery (M-*-0867) along with his father. He served in WW2 (Service Number - VX104733 enlisting at St Kilda) and after returning took over his father's business. The Mair family were resident in Barton Street for several generations. Beryl's father Dave Mair was a keen sportsman and founder of the Kangaroo Social Club of cricketers. This is part of a large collection relating to the Mair, Deakin and Young families. The building was erected in c 1913 as a home / surgery for Dr James L Blakie (1868-1937), who originally lived / practised across the road. It was designed by architect Arthur William Plaisted (1890-1965) and is an early example of attic-style Californian bungalow style. Dr Carrington ( 1900-1970) succeeded Dr Blakie and practised at 174 Union Road from 1930-1970. Rita Teagle House belonged to Tom Fielding's grandparents (Margaret Teagle and Richard Fielding). It was at top of the hill on right hand side (no. 10 Thomas Street, Eltham) Pictured is a bungalow behind the main house. These were added on every time more children came along. Rita was born 1910 and married Horace Maclaughlin in 1935. They had a son, Brian Lawrence Maclaughin (1937). The house was built in 1927. It was the home of Mrs Fanny Harcourt (nee Horsfield), 1874-1949, who was the mother of Muriel Joy Harcourt. She married Alfred Leonard Gordon Noack in 1942. It later became their home. Alfred was a teacher and came to Surrey Hills from Echuca. Alfred Noack took a number of photos of the Surrey Hills area which he donated to the collection. Fanny Adelaide Harcourt Horsfield died in 1949 in Echuca. OBITUARY - MRS. F. A. HARCOURT-HORSFIELD The late Fanny Adelaide Harcourt-Horsfield, who passed away at her daughter's Mrs A. Noack's residence on July 26, was a member of the well-known Smythe family of Ballina, N.S.Wales, and the wife of the late Joseph Victor Harcourt-Horsfield executive member of the Nestle Anglo-Swiss Milk Coy. Deceased had been an invalid for some 15 years, but in spite of her disabilities was always of a bright and cheerful disposition, which endeared her to her many friends. Built for a client by Albert Harbert in the 1920s. Albert built many local homes. This is a fine example of its style with double gables and return verandah. A black and white photograph of a weatherboard Californian Bungalow style house with a tiled roof. It has an L-shaped verandah with solid pillars decorated with stucco which is also on the chimney. The weatherboards are decoratively notched and the upper sections of the grouped windows have diamond panes. Framed by a woven wire fence along the street frontage. The donor George Lister Coop was about 21 years of age when he took this photo in 1958 of his family home. His parents were George Burton Coop (b c1906 Williamstown; died aged 54 years at Mont Albert) and Winsome Alice (MS: Trewartha) who married in 1936. They are first listed at this address in the electoral roll in 1937. They had 2 children: George Lister Coop - born St Georges Hospital, 8/10/1937 and Alison - born c1945. However the donor informed that he initially attended Chatham State School because his first home was the Spanish Mission style flats at 346 Whitehorse Road, opposite Brenbeal Street, Balwyn. When his grandparents died, the family moved to 688 Whitehorse Road and he then attended Mont Albert Central School. Alison being younger did not go to Chatham Primary. The balustrades and finials of the veranda are simple with occasional feature planks with a tulip detail. A bird cage hangs from the veranda. Thomas Benjamin Morgan, wife Sylvia Vyanna purchased guest house, children were John (Jack), Thomas, Dorothy (Doll) and Nina In December 1927 the family of Thomas Benjamin Morgan, his wife Sylvia Vyanna and children John (Jack), Thomas, Dorothy (Doll) and Nina purchased the property. In 1931 a major rebuilding project took place with brothers John and Thomas together with the help of local storekeeper Harold Goodwin Taylor designing and building a grand new guest house. These badges were produced in the 1950s to raise funds for the Lyndoch Old Folks Home in Warrnambool. This aged care facility at the mouth of the Hopkins River was opened in 1952 when the property known as Lyndoch was purchased. Lyndoch had been established in the 1880s by the Melbourne businessman George Rolfe who bought up a considerable amount of land in the Warrnambool district in the late 19th century. After George Rolfe died his step-daughter, Florence Lake built the bungalow known as Lyndoch and this building was the basis for the development of the property into an aged care facility. Today the facility has been considerably expanded and is known as Lyndoch Living. These badges are retained as mementoes of the type of fund-raising ventures conducted in the 1950s to raise funds for local charities in Warrnambool – in this case ‘Lyndoch’ Old Folks Home..1 A metal badge with green lettering on a cream-coloured background. The rusted back has a metal clip and the name of the maker is printed around the edge of the badge. .2 As above except that the lettering is very faded and the clip at the back does not work.
