Churchill Island VIC phillip-island-and-the-bass-coast Meat safes ...Meat safes were used to keep meat and vegetables cooler before the availability of ice and then kerosene or electric refrigerators. The safe would be placed on a bench in a cool place. Water would be placed in a small container on each leg to stop ants getting into the safe there would be another water container at the top also to stop the ants. Pieces of damp hessian would then be hung over each side. As the wind hits the hessian it causes the water to evaporate and the items inside the safe to stay cooler. This meant that the items inside the safe would last a day or two longer. Meat safes were being used throughout the time period showcased by the displays at Churchill Island and this expands understanding of how refrigeration worked prior to electricity.painted pale yellow metal meat safe with square grid hold pattern for air flow. The safe would be hung in the shade on a tree by a hook on the top,and pieces of damp hessian would be hung over each side. As the wind hits the hessian it causes the water to evaporate and the items inside the safe to stay cooler. This meant that the items inside the safe would last a day or two longer.Painted pale green safe. Rectangular grid pattern of ventilation holes with circles of ventilation holes within the pattern. Surface rust patches. Water reservoir and wire hook added later on top. Internal trays bottom and 1/2 way. Door detached - hinges rusted away. No base apart from shelf. Functional object - Coolgardie type meat safe, circa 1920s
This safe was invented in the 1890’s to protect and maintain food longer. The wire grid kept the food safe from vermin and allowed breeze to blow through. Hessian curtains hung down the sides and hessian strips lay in the water reservoir on top. The water wicked down the sides of the safe wetting the curtains. The breeze blew over the wet hessian keeping the inside cool. Meat safes were often kept on the verandah to increase breeze. The legs would stand in bowls of water to stop ant infestation.Pale green enamelled meat safe fitted for Coolgardie curtains (not present) fittings and 3 sides for curtains. This gravy boat would have been used to serve gravy or sauce, which could be poured over the meats by the diners, at the table. This gravy boat was produced by Pinnox and Unicorn, 'Wedgwood & Co Ltd', which was headed by Enoch Wedgwood, and was based in Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent, England. This company is often confused with 'Wedgwood' which belonged to Josiah Wedgwood. The printed mark on the bottom of the boat indicates the boat is C1908+Small, rounded white ceramic gravy boat with black geometric, and gold floral pattern around rim. Dad & Dave Cafe was located in Pall Mall Charing Cross Bendigo. It was opened by dairy farmer and milk bar owner Les McClure in 1939. His Four'n Twenty meat pies were initially made in Bendigo in 1947. McClure sold his Four'n Twenty Pie's Pty. Ltd. to Peters Ice Cream (VIC) Ltd. in 1960.A cream coloured jug with green decorative trim and McClures on it. Its ten centimetres high, eight and half centimetres diameter at its base six centimetres at the top with a small spout. Mandie Boyd, Robin and Patricia's eldest daughter, has very vivid memories of this meat mincer, her favorite gadget. "Every Sunday until I was about 12 (mid-1950s), there would be roast lamb with all the trimmings, good homemade mint sauce, roast potato and pumpkin, parsnip, tomato and onion pie with breadcrumb topping, fresh green peas and gravy. Monday night was Shepherd’s Pie, and I looked forward to it. The cold meat was cut up and fed through the mincing machine fastened to the table at Riversdale Rd. I don't remember it ever coming out at Walsh Street. Maybe Patricia was over cold roast lamb at that stage. I loved turning the handle and watching the meat squidge out, could hardly call it mince, some onion and lastly a slice of bread to push the bits through. Then the mincer all came apart, was washed and put away until next Monday. The meat and onion tossed with leftover gravy, mash on top, loads of butter, etched with a fork tine and baked in the oven. Served with tomato sauce, very good." A beige coloured, heavy meat mincer. Detachable (discs 2) and outer cover for mincing. Long handle with wood end. This safe came from the property “Fairview” Tungamah. Victoria. Fairview was owned and farmed by Charles and Nellie Nunn. The safe is at least 100 yrs old and served the family of parents and 12 children well by keeping food cool in the blazing summer days. Beverley Long(McFarlane) remembers it on the farmhouse verandah of her grandparents property near the dairy where fresh milk was separated to produce cream and butter..it cooled meats, and dairy products by strips of hessian kept wet by water stored in the top tank, hanging down around the safe.More than 100 years oldMetal box construction with fly wire covering on all 4 sides. The scraper was used to remove the bristles from the carcass.A curved metal straight bladed pig scraper used to remove the bristles from a pig's carcass. The Universal Food Chopper was a common domestic item internationally and throughout Australia. It was manufactured by the Landers, Frary & Clark company ( L.F. &C.). It was first sold in 1897, and proved to be so popular that the company still featured it in their catalogue sixty years later. It was marketed as a device that not only ground meat, but also processed vegetables. The number 2 on the device referred to the size of the grinder, with the 3 model being the largest for heavy-duty use and the 00 model the smallest. This appliance was a common domestic item used throughout AustraliaA cast iron and wood domestic appliance. The food chopper has a large screw on the base which allowed it to be anchored to a table or work bench. Food items were placed in the the cavity at the top and the user wound the handle to force the food through the blade. Different attachments allowed adjustments to the size the food was chopped.On Side 1: Pat.
