Artist comment: These three prints (The Groom, The Undertaker's Assistant, The Organist) are part of a series on forebears of Portland. The drawings are taken from people in a collection of photographs belonging to the Johnson Family of Portland. The "Old Lady" and "The Wedding" are part of the same series. Robert Simeon Nelson established a carpentry and cabinet making business in Linton from about 1858. His services included coffin making, and over time the business gradually evolved into "Nelson Bros Undertakers". R.S. Nelson married Mary Ann Dawe in 1864. Empire Day celebrations were held from 1908-1912. Prior to the opening of the railway in 1893 the only public transport to Surrey Hills was the Melbourne-Lilydale horse coach which travelled to Surrey Hills down Victoria Street and Mont Albert Road. The fare to Union Road was 9 pence. Photo 16-4a was the number given to the original print provided by the State Savings Bank. Ken Hall made a negative from it, and the reprint of this was given the number 1459. This number was chosen as the catalogue number to avoid confusion with SHP4a. Photo provided by Surrey Hills branch of State Savings Bank of Victoria in 1978 for launch of Surrey Hills Neighbourhood Centre and was one of the first photos in the collection. The inscriptions on the reverse may indicate it was used in the Surrey Hills Neighbourhood News.Black and white photo of Union Road looking south towards Canterbury Road. The funeral recorded was that of Michael Ford which took place on the 20 June 1933 at Sunbury. He resided in Union Road Ascot Vale but was buried at Sunbury Cemetery. He was sixty-five years old. He was buried in the Roman Catholic section H plot 21 with two others in plots 22 an 23. His burial number was 2754. The registrar was W&W Lang and the undertaker was E H King. The older fenced-off grave without a headstone is that of Cornelius Ford who had a private funeral when he was buried in Sunbury Cemetery on 7 December 1908, aged seventy-one. He is buried in Section H, plots 1 - 4. The registrar was McMahon and the undertaker was Trask. Cornelius Trask conducted a butcher's business in Brook Street and O'Shanassy Street. He also worked for some time as a publican at the Ball Court Hotel. He was also known as Gus.A non-digital black and white photograph of a recently dug grave in readiness for an internment.
