Nicholas Caire was born on Guernsey in the Channel Islands in 1837. He arrived in Adelaide with his parents in about 1860. In 1867, following photographic journeys in Gippsland, he opened a studio in Adelaide. From 1870 to 1876 he lived and worked in Talbot in Central Victoria. In 1876 he purchased T. F. Chuck's studios in the Royal Arcade Melbourne. In 1885, following the introduction of dry plate photography, he began a series of landscape series, which were commercially successful. As a photographer, he travelled extensively through Victoria, photographing places few of his contemporaries had previously seen. He died in 1918. The series of 60 photographs that comprise the series was issued c. 1876 and reinforced a neo-Romantic view of the Australian landscape to which a growing nationalist movement would respond. Nicholas Caire was active as a photographer in Australia from 1858 until his death in 1918. This group of buildings all of which served as churches at different periods is one of the best visual demonstrations of the rapid growth of Ballarat caused by the boom years of the gold rush following the initial alluvial diggings of the 1850s. Pastoral runs in the Stawell area were selected in the 1840s, but it was the gold found by a shepherd in the district in May 1853 that provided the real reason for the foundation of a township. By August 1854, 5,000 people were seeking their fortune at the Pleasant Creek goldfield. Maddingley is a locality or township within the broader township area of Bacchus Marsh. This map is dated 1856 but is based on an earlier survey in 1843. The main area of Maddingley shown on this map is an area bounded by Bacchus Street, Moore Street, Griffith Street and Franklin Street. Other streets visible are Inglis Street, Labilliere Street, McCrae Street. The area to the east of Franklin Street is not sub-divided and is described as an 'alluvial flat. A single page paper map showing land allotments, streets, and natural watercourses in the township of Maddingley. The map is pasted into a bound volume containing 76 maps or plans in total. The Cabbage Tree Creek township was originally established to support the booming timber industry of the mid 20th century. Five timber mills worked full time supporting the families that were drawn to the area's wealth of natural resources. The settlement of Cabbage Tree Creek is located on the Princes Highway, 27 km east of Orbost in East Gippsland. The first white settler arrived in the valley in 1887 cutting a dray track from Marlo to the south-west. Several families cleared the alluvial flats, growing maize, peas and beans and raising pigs, cattle and sheep. Later the farmers milked cows, sending cream to Orbost. In the late 1890s, small quantities of alluvial gold were found in the creek. A school commenced classes in 1913, but enrolment was small and at times the school operated part time with several other small schools in the area. The school building served as a hall for the district. From the 1920s the Cabbage Tree Hotel catered to drivers on the improved Princes Highway. Established during the great Mount Alexander alluvial gold rush of 1852-54 the cemetery is located on a small hill overlooking one of the richest spots on the goldfield (the junction of Fryers Creek and Loddon River). The location of the cemetery was chosen because it was a convenient piece of ground where gold was not likely to be discovered, and burials were mainly of Chinese miners. It remained in use until 1857. The cemetery was restored in 1929 using money raised within the Chinese communities of Bendigo and Castlemaine. Early miners at work caption reads: "The large bucket, called kibble, is used to pull up the unwanted debris, the smaller iron buckets are used to raise the alluvial material containing gold. This material is mixed with water in the puddling barrells (foreground) and poured into the cradle (left). The rocking motion causes the gold specks to sink to the bottom from where it is collected. The remaining material may then be hand washed in the gold pan held by the miner." Booklet - Victoria Hill
Victoria Hill, accessed from Marong Road, was one of the richest areas on the Bendigo goldfields and was the beginning of reef mining as opposed to alluvial mining. Between 1853 and 1861 there were 16 claims registered on Victoria Hill. Between 1908 and 1910 it was the site of the world's deepest shaft (1365-1406 meters)Today it provides interpretive walks that include sites such as an open-cut mine (1850's), poppet head, quartz crushing battery (1930's) and the foundations of George Lancell's 180 mine. 1864 photograph of the Coffer Dam in the River Yarra situated (approximately) opposite Whipstick Gully. Remains of bridge built in 1860(?) wrecked by 1863 flood in background. Reproduced page 29 of ‘Pioneers & Painters’ Gold was first discovered in this area at Andersons Creek (Warrandyte) in June 1851 by Louis Michel. Discoveries north of the Yarra did not occur until about 1854. Although it took some months for a true rush to develop it was not long before alluvial workings were being carried on in most of the Shire of Eltham. The last area in which gold was discovered was Kinglake. As the gold became harder to find, deep mining took over from alluvial diggings in the gullies. Perhaps the most extensive of the deep workings was the Diamond Creek Mine just outside the boundary of the Shire. This form of mining was continued into the 1930s. There are believed to be some mines in the area still capable of producing gold but present prices make working these uneconomical. Some gold is still found by weekend prospectors. Printed article from The School Paper dated July 1, 1952. The article was written for The School Paper by Lucy Hill. Document dated 28th April 1865 "All that the amalgamated alluvial claim at Pottery Flat aforesaid registered Number 881 in the Books of the Mining Register for the Mining District of Sandhurst known as the Royal Oak Company's claim." Listed in "The Bendigo goldfield registry" 1872 as Royal Oak Company: Bignell's Reef, Derwent Gully. Capital £24000., in £24,000 20s. shares. Manager, W. Barker. Newspaper articles dating from 11 Jan 1867 refer to the company as "Royal Oak Mining Company". Both names appear to be used interchangeably. This A3 document is made up of 3 pieces of heavy stock lined paper. The document is bound on the left side with glue and string creating a book which comprises the legal contract of mortgage for mining equipment. The document is handwritten in black ink across 4 pages (2 double sided pages) with the last page acting as the documents cover when folded down into a pamphlet. The signature page includes 9 red wax seals. When held up to the light, the cover page and internal page show an indentation reading G. Wilmot 1862.
