Spinning Wheel
Part of the Zakrzewski Collection of spinning wheels donated to the National Wool Museum by Mr Wlodzimierz Zakrzewski. For many years, Mr Zakrzewski collected, researched and repaired spinning wheels from all over the world. This is a German wheel for spinning flax and it dates from the 19th century. The plaque on the back gives the name of the original owner: Anna Dorothea Adelheid Gruther from Orbinghausen, Germany. The date presumably refers to when she was given the wheel. It was purchased from Mr Eric Corran, a manufacturer of looms and spinning wheels and was in extremely poor condition before being restored by Mr Zakrzewski.Part of the Zakrzewski Spinning Wheel collection.Anna Dorothea / Adelheid Gruther / in Orbinghausen 1868.handicrafts - history flax, spinning wheels, highlights of the national wool museum: the zakrzewski spinning wheel collection - exhibition (28/07/2001 - 02/12/2001), zakrzewski, mr wlodzimierz gruther, anna dorothea adelheid, handicrafts - history, flax -

Negative - Haeusler Glass Negatives Collection - Grave of Henry Edward and Anna Emilie Klinge, c1910
The Wodonga Historical Society Haeusler Collection provides invaluable insight into life in late nineteenth and early twentieth century north east Victoria. The collection comprises manuscripts, personal artefacts used by the Haeusler family on their farm in Wodonga, and a set of glass negatives which offer a unique visual snapshot of the domestic and social lives of the Haeusler family and local Wodonga community. The Haeusler family migrated from Prussia (Germany) to South Australia in the 1840s and 1850s, before purchasing 100 acres of Crown Land made available under the Victorian Lands Act 1862 (also known as ‘Duffy’s Land Act’) in 1866 in what is now Wodonga West. The Haeusler family were one of several German families to migrate from South Australia to Wodonga in the 1860s. This digital image was produced from one of the glass negatves that form part of the collection, probably taken by Louis Haeusler (b.1887) with the photographic equipment in the Wodonga Historical Society Haeusler Collection. This item is unique and has well documented provenance and a known owner. It forms part of a significant and representative historical collection which reflects the local history of Wodonga. It contributes to our understanding of domestic and family life in early twentieth century Wodonga, as well as providing interpretative capacity for themes including local history and social history.Digital image from the Haeusler Glass negative collection. These graves can be found in the Wodonga Cemetery. Henry (Heinrich) Edward and Anna Emilie were children of Johann Wilhelm Klinge (1832 – 1907) who married Christiana Mattiske (1838 – 1918) and who are also buried in the Wodonga cemetery."IN /MEMORY/ of /HENRY EDWARD KLINGE/ WHO DIED 27TH JULY 1900/ AGED 29 YEARS./ALSO HIS SISTER/ ANNA EMILIE KLINGE/ WHO DIED 25TH JANUARY 1868/ AGED 1 YEAR AND 8 MONTHS."haeusler family graves, photography, wodonga pioneers, haeusler family, german immigration wodonga, glass negatives -

This is a photograph of Annabella McKenzie who trained at The Royal Melbourne in the 1890's. The Royal Melbourne Hospital was the first hospital in Victoria – established in 1848 to serve the young and thriving community of Melbourne. Prior to the transfer of nursing education to the university sector, nurses were trained in a course of instruction in hospital nursing schools that awarded a certificate in general nursing. These courses were generally for a three-year period, and nurses were paid employees of the parent hospital. Annabella Mckenzie Fisher was born into the Mckenzie family and married into the Fisher family. She married Fisher James Fisher, a Lochend farmer. The Fisher family was a very early Orbost farming family.A hand-coloured photograph in an oval shaped wooden frame. It is of a woman in a nurse's uniform of a dark coloured dress with a white bib apron and black belt. The cuffs of the long sleeved dress are white. She is wearing a white cap. Painting: Melinda Harper, 'Untitled'
This work was completed during Harper's Laughing Waters residency at Boomerang House, 2001. The Laughing Waters Artist in Residence Program was run by Nillumbik Shire Council (in partnership with Parks Victoria) 2001-2015. "My painting is about colour and form, and their relationship. I am interested in what one colour does to another colour, the weight of a colour and the feeling of a colour. Colour is very complex; I am looking and responding to what I see and what interests me." Melinda Harper in Artist Profile journal article by Melissa Pesa, 2015.The painting is representative of Harper's artistic practice and the vivid colours and abstraction particular to her work. Small-medium sized oil painting of vivid, bold, coloured shapes arranged in a kaleidoscope pattern. There is an array of colours each placed in proximity to each other to create a vibrant, lively atmosphere.
